"We decrypted a part of the Project ARCH folder. Apparently there's two files, one of which we have successfully decrypted." Mr. Peterson was nervous around Thalia, he always was. And with good reason. Thalia Coleman was a very dangerous and powerful woman who wouldn't back out of killing someone to achieve her goals.
This time though, it wasn't because of her. It was because of something far, far worse.

"Yes?", she replied, "I'm waiting?"
"Okay ehm... It appears to be a paper on a new neurosubduer with some very powerful effects. It's been extensively researched over the past few years: in every pod they sold to enter everHope, a small amount of that neurosubduer was added. While in the simulation, it could be injected to the unwilling test subject. The pod is able to monitor neural and physical data after injection to study its effects."

"You have to be kidding me?! Were they that cruel?"

"There is more. It was designed as a military tool to create super soldiers. It enhances strength, numbs pain and has several other effects. By the time we shut down everHope, it was almost fully functioning."

"Almost?"

"They weren't able to modify the horrible side effects of abstention. It's highly addictive, but once one no longer takes it, obsession and insanity are what follows. The last reported test subject died biting through his wrists.
The worst part is that they chose not to research any further, and released it like that.
Mrs. Coleman, this is the new drugs that people are using everywhere. If we find Simotech and stop the production... I'm not sure we want to see that."

"I can't believe this..." For the first time in a very long time, Thalia actually showed that she was frightened. Simotech's crimes never seemed to stop, and they were always a step ahead.
"Peterson, is there anything else we can do?"

"I believe so? With this paper we know all about the serum, so we can continue the research they did and try to synthetize an antidote, a cure, anything that stops the horrible side effects."

"Good. Thank you. Get as many people working on that. I still want that second part of the folder, though.

This is what happens when we try to play God. This is what happens when we believe we can change His creations, and make our own.
Yes, I'm a very religious person. In this time and age, it might be hard to believe. People are wild about science, about technology, we have created worlds and animals and plants. Everything we eat is genetically modified, to optimize taste and growth. I too, have tried my hand at playing God.

But, is this really how it's supposed to be? Is this really what we want, what we need? Did all of this happen just because, or because we're too stubborn to see that we can't just change everything until we like it? Where's the beauty in a flower that's no longer itself, forced to have colours and scents that completely go against its nature? Where is the beauty in once so rare green eyes, when everyone can just ask for a baby with them?

There's a certain beauty in imperfection, and imperfection is what makes this world perfect. How can we enjoy anything when it's no longer genuine, when it's no longer itself?

Maybe one day, I'll be able to apologize to God for trying to be Him. For trying to make imperfection perfection, even when I should have known the beauty lies in the former.

Chapter 3: Steel and Software

We started out as a small family company, repairing household robotics. After several clients asked for not only repairing, but upgrading their appliances, we decided to change course and made that our speciality, instead. Turned out it was a massive hole in the market, and our business skyrocketed.
That gave us a lot of time and funds to really pursue our dream: building war machines. Not because we liked to spill blood, no, definitely not. You see, wars cannot be prevented. It's human nature. We exist, we fight. We had the possibility to prevent anyone dying, to instead let a bunch of scrap metal fight our wars for us. No more bloodshed...

It was a beautiful ideal. It was also one we shared with Simotech. They asked us to build security bots for them, to help design and build their connection pods, everything. From heavily armed drones to medical equipment, we made it all for them. For a better world. A world without lead-filled walls painted red. We truly believed that it was possible, we really did.

We don't regret any part of it. Why should we? This was a partnership like any other, two booming businesses helping each other out. We are not the demons you're looking for; all we want is a better future, and just like all of you, we're willing to fight for it.

Newsflash: A shipment on the way to the GenX Life Vault was intercepted and hijacked. Suspects have not yet been identified. Content of the shipment is unknown, and GenX denies to have had any of their cargo intercepted. This obviously raises some questions: is the Life Vault really used for its original purpose, being the preservation of nearly extinct plant species that are vital to modern medicine, or are they using it as their way of doing shady business practices? What were they transporting? Are they making drugs? What is happening here in San Diego, and does it have anything to do with Summit 2180?
