At the time I'm writing this, you're only a few months old. You're still too young to understand this world, and naively only see the beauty of it. Or maybe I'm just bitter?

Usually, I write these letters to my own mom, but due to recent events I'm writing one to you, too. I want you to know who I am, and not just know what people tell you I am.

Soon, you'll grow up. You'll want to be an adult as soon as you can, because you won't like being treated like a child. Because you'll want to fit in, I'm certain you'll ask me for the latest cybernetic eye implant, and for the newest holo tablet. You will also refuse to admit that you want those to fit in, and instead try to convince me that you just like them.

At some point, you'll have history classes, and learn that this world isn't as pretty as you once believed it was. You'll learn that I, too, played part in that history. You see, I don't write history books. I don't know what people will say about me. They might call me a hero, they might call me a villain. What I do want you to know, is that I did it all because I believed it was right. Because I believed it was just.

All I ever wanted was a world for you to grow up, one that is as beautiful as you once thought it was. I blamed myself for a very long time, wanting to raise a child in this cold, horrible world. Was it selfish? I suppose so. I've had many sleepless nights because of this, trust me.

But then you came. I fell in love in with your little face. With that lovely, innocent sparkle in your eyes. I fell in love with your endless curiosity, and your endless kindness.
If a child can show these qualities, why can't we?

When I saw you, I knew that talking about improving everything wouldn't be enough. There were people out there that harmed others, and they could harm you. I had to do what I did, for you, because I wanted to protect you.

I'm not sure when you'll read this letter, or if you'll read it at all. If you do, please know that I love you. I always will.
Promise me one more thing, will you? Promise that you'll never try to be like me. You're perfect, and I'm not. I'll never be. Can you promise me that?

Many people here are angry. Some even more than just angry. Having heard about everything that happened, I can understand that sentiment.
I was lucky enough to not be here. I saw everything on the newsfeed, while on my honeymoon in New Beijing, seventh district of the moon. We stayed there when all of this happened, because it wasn't safe to come back.
Three years on the moon. It sounds so surreal, looking back. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it was worse than being here, not at all; I don't think there was any place worse than earth during the Lead War.
It just... Up there, you experience a different kind of loneliness. A different kind of despair, because nobody you know can reach you if something goes wrong. Communication between earth and moon is still slow, even years after the New Lunar Colonies were established.

When everything finally calmed down, We came back. Having stayed in a low gravity zone for so long, rehabilitation was long and exhausting. It's when we found out my husband had a weak heart.

He didn't survive.

I don't have anything to do with this war. I have never been part of it, and I am not responsible to do anything at all. I'm willing to drown myself in my work to forget my pain, but I will not fight your wars.
