Wisdom has trouble understanding what happened to chennisden, although he hears from the others that chennisden is definitely dead, and had seen his body bobbing in the water. Why would chennisden be in the water, though?
But then the breeze picks up, and the licorice flag becomes visible to Wisdom as it waves and flaps in the wind. It looks like a delicious treat, and Wisdom had always shared chennisden's love of sweets, so he understood how that could have led to a fatal mistake.
