Spoiler: no peeking
firstly i think any type of sword should be above 50 on this scale
i tend to think of katanas as among the smoothest of swords, so im looking at the higher end of the range, 80+
apparently the smoothest substance on earth is the atom mirror, and i would have expected this to be looked up and clued for 95+ values. so i dont think we're at the very top end either.
i'd say 80-90.
Smooth as silk when he's scum, and very much capable of running things from behind the scenes while appearing to be doing minimal effort. - Almost50
Xtoxm is consistently great - Shosin

I would equate smoothness to sharpness.

Compared to european swords, Kantana is clearly much sharper.
How sharp is a samurai sword? Well, it definitely has the sharpest blade on average, but not nearly close to the fantastic stories surrounding it.
However:
Steel can only be sharpened to a degree allowed by it’s molecular structure. About as sharp as a commercial razor blade…So far as I know, the sharpest edges are still glass/obsidian. These materials fracture down to the molecular level. Surgeons still use obsidian scalpel blades for certain types of very delicate surgery.
So, I would have kantana at about 90.

when i search smooth katana i find a lot of results for rendering smooth surfaces and i'm not sure how relevant they are to the question at hand.

Maybe Kanna is talking about the ratio of the blade to the hilt on a katana. A Nice 80 then.

Aren't hilts also smooth? I guess I just assume they aren't or else kanna would have given a different clue

sorry if i mess this up terribly, as i'm unfamiliar and uneducated in this field. as far as i can tell katana is a plugin for industry standard cpu based 3d rendering. it is part of the suite pixar designed and uses (renderman), among others.

https://all3dp.com/1/best-3d-rendering- ... #renderman

is this something kanna would be familiar with? if so, i think it is quite possible she is referring to this as the k was capitalized in her clue as given by lilith2013, which is noteworthy as unicorn was not capitalized and my clue was posted as i gave it so i assume that kanna capitalized the K and smooth makes more sense to me when i try to apply it to this than it does in reference to a sword but i may be very far off course here.

...I love the conspiracy theory but I'd be pretty surprised if she didn't mean the sword. Searching "Katana" doesn't yield any results related to the rendering software on the 1st page for me, so she'd be putting a lot of faith in us to take the far more obscure interpretation.

HOWEVER, I just noticed a distinction between this clue and all the others. We've been provided
speechmarks
around the clue this time. I assumed those were provided by Lilith, but since this isn't the case for any of the other clues, it seems that Kanna included them intentionally.

Wait, the fact she's given the speechmarks probably indicates she's referring to the name of something specific, and suddenly that rendering software looks a lot more plausible, shiki!1

i also find this character from dc comics: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katana_(comics)

and here is the disambiguation page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katana_(disambiguation)

i'm not anymore sure of how to apply smooth to most of these than i am of applying it to a sword.

This is actually true. I didn't see the speechmark. This may change everything.

Maybe it's the motorcycle brand: https://www.globalsuzuki.com/motorcycle ... ts/katana/
A Cut Above

Forged to perfection and polished to a magnificent radiance. Engineered to provide maximum control and optimum performance. Finely crafted to take riding pleasure to a new level. The Suzuki KATANA is destined to create a new legend.

From the sharp lines and highlights defining the length of its body to the rider-friendly performance of its 110kW (150PS) engine, every detail of the Suzuki KATANA speaks of distinctive beauty.

While its design cues pay due homage to the iconic GSX1100S KATANA, which stole the hearts of riders around the world in 1981, the KATANA is a thoroughly modern machine that is breathtaking to behold and inspiring to ride.

From my Kanna-trivia-knowledge and based on her field: she's most likely to be talking about the visual effects software from the wikipedia page.

The question is how we get a measurement of smooth/rough from it. Maybe she wants us to render an Olympic Swimming Pool inside the program and see how smooth it turns out. Good thinking, Kanna.

https://rmanwiki.pixar.com/display/RFK/ ... +in+Katana

https://www.awn.com/news/foundrys-katan ... n-3delight
Key benefits include:

Fast, physically based rendering technology with open shading language (OSL) at its core
Fully interactive live rendering and a real-time light mixer especially well-suited for Katana’s workflow
Material nodes that are 100 percent compatible with the Maya version
Ability to use fur/hair and displacements extensively with negligible impact on performance
Better quality rendering with
perfectly smooth subdivision surfaces

Network caching for efficient network utilization by automatic scene dependency localization
So 100? :D

Woah. Good work, enomis. I think we actually go 96 then.

My only concern about guessing 95+ however, is wouldn't Kanna just google "smoothest surfaces" and submit something like an atom mirror? Maybe she felt it was cheaty or wanted to go for style.

I think a very very high value makes more sense than 100 because there are so many easy clues for 100 like "sphere".

i do not know if kanna would be familiar with this, however. it is interesting that across all of our applications of katana the consensus does seem to be rather smooth.

is there a benefit to 96 over 94? i can think of a potential argument for 98 (the highest logical guess) but after that i think 94 is the next breaking point unless i'm missing something.

Both of these makes sense.

Actually from iso-ing Kanna(Since I am not very familiar with her), I think maybe we are researching too deeply. She seems to go by perception with back-up evidence alot.
And because of this, I am begining to doubt all our analysis because they are like key benefits of "Katana". :shifty:

96 gives us a range of 94-98 while 94 gives us a range of 92-96 right?

I am thinking if it makes sense to go with 90 and let the other team decide if they wanna go right?

96 gives us access to receiving four points from 92-96 and 96-100 and everything in between. 94 gives us access to 90-94 and 94-98 and everything in between. the primary benefit to 94 is always hitting at least 3 points on 90 and the increased lower range in general, since either will hit 100 on the right side before leaving the point scoring range. i think 90 is probably the next step down after 94. but i may be thinking about this incorrectly in general.

I was assuming the whole of the 4 point range would always be on the scale, shiki... but maybe not. I think we should go for 94 then.

One of us could buy it and test it out to see how smooth it is?

Spoiler:
Any volunteers? It's not too pricey.

I think it's never 100 because 100 would be a more straightforward clue. I want 92 or 90

Maybe it's actually way to the left because all projects start out rough on Katana, before in some cases becoming real things irl when it comes to modelling.

There's a lot of focus on that and templates here:
