We put ourselves in the time-out chair for about 24 hours, with a short re-engagement midway. And we announced what we were doing. That was for thread health and our own tempers to cool down.

If that's not what you mean by "detached", then I don't know what could give you this impression.

I didn't see your announcement about retreating and it had no impact. It's more of a tonal thing. You feel cold and distant. That's the best way I know to explain it and it might not be 100% right.
