hi, my name is tris. you might recognize me from such posts as . anyway, i have an inside scoop on here's what hellby and trish said about some songs and also what those songs were.

ACTUAL USER: OUHHHH TRISSSSSSS THO!!!!!

what is with old british songs and being insanely panned ?!? anyway this is good. bass is the best part of it but overall an interesting orchestral fusion situation. thinking there's a universe where this would have grand slammed for a different picture of a cat in schadd's leftcat/rightcat

Spoiler: (her 8th) Counting Crows - Raining in Baltimore
LIKE: 6.7 (4.0 w.d.)
UNFAMILIARITY: -0.3
SUSPECTED USER: shafty
ACTUAL USER: i was correct -0.1

6.3 (3.2 weighted)

i've listened to this album but can't really audiate any of it except a little bit of a murder of one. this song.. is passing me by... and i dont have nothin to say no actually its like literally good though. lol

Spoiler: (her 9th) Baumer - Not Done With You Yet
LIKE: 6.0 (3.8 w.d.)
UNFAMILIARITY: 0
SUSPECTED USER: isis
ACTUAL USER: i was correct -0.1

not entirely sure how i feel about this. there's kind of like a corny eurovision instrumental situation which i find charming. singing reminds me of like, TDCC?

Spoiler: (her 10th) RAISE A SUILEN - BRING IT ON (Raychell)
UNFAMILIARITY: 0.1
SUSPECTED USER: sirius
ACTUAL USER: irius -0.1

5.8 (2.9 weighted)

giving an aggregate point of unfamiliarity for this being like a totally unknown concept of the franchise to me + literally being so hard to figure out what the artist and song were called

Spoiler: (her 11th) Argent - Be Free
UNFAMILIARITY: 0
SUSPECTED USER: davsto
ACTUAL USER: this was you -0.1

5.7 (2.9 weighted)

this sounds like british psychadelic rock or something. the characteristic that i find enduringly difficult about the genre is the synth patch choice. the bass is good

Spoiler: (her 7th) Iglooghost - Bug Thief
LIKE: 7.6 (4.3/5)
UNFAMILIARITY: -0.4
SUSPECTED USER: tris? : )
ACTUAL USER: CHEETORY 6 !!!!!!!!! going to angrily take away -0.1 from you (jk)

7.2 (3.6 weighted)

i know this song and i want to say it was even introductory to a certain type of music for me. i have yet to listen to the full album its been on my backlog for like three years. i like big thief

Spoiler: (her 6th) Hate Dept. - Gravity
UNFAMILIARITY: 0
SUSPECTED USER: mushshagana
ACTUAL USER: correct! -0.1

7.3 (3.7 weighted)

immediately giving me these dark dance punk vibes that are good. i like that synth that feels like its just scratching at your ear.

Spoiler: (her second) be steadwell - Greens
LIKE: 7.9 (4.4/5)

ACTUAL USER: STTOP SWITCHEING CHEVRE

thank you, bass~ ✨ this is like a gorgeous doo wopy pleasure... and that gosh darn flute oooo!! oooo! ooohhh!!!

Spoiler: (one of her 4ths) Angel Olsen - All Right Now
LIKE: 7.6 (4.3/5)
UNFAMILIARITY: -0.1
SUSPECTED USER: cheve
ACTUAL USER: can i literally get you right for oncei n my life schadd

7.5 (3.8 weighted)

Spoiler: (the other one) Don Caballero - Don Caballero 3
LIKE: 7.6 (4.3/5)
UNFAMILIARITY: 0
SUSPECTED USER: lets a go with pj
ACTUAL USER: correct -0.1

7.5 (3.8 weighted)

i liked this. the guitar feels oratory. the middle part is my favorite. something something more cowbell.

Spoiler: (it got all the 1sts) in love with a ghost - flowers ft. nori
LIKE: 8.3 (4.5/5)
UNFAMILIARITY: -0.2
SUSPECTED USER: jun
ACTUAL USER: i was right -0.1

8.0 (4.0 weighted) +2

the submitter with the closest idea to my own i think. the crushed vocals reminds of like goodbye to a world. and the theremin-like synth definitely has that vocal effect as well. i like the winter wonderland type piano riff

I figured it out!

Since I sent mine in blind, I had to apply a different metric to pick something nifty for you. I figured some songs are just a lot of good fun and hit every one of the right notes to be at least listenable for just about any music taste -- Hate Dept's Ditch is FULL of those, and this is by far my favorite song. The unexpected soul-music-esque backing vocals for the "yeah yeah" at the end always make me crack a smile, no matter how bad a day I'm having. The backbone guitar riff is just this dancy blues ditty, tuneful distortion guiding its fun groove around, and the synth bass, far from being a bad fit for such a 70s-esque sound, acts as propulsion and glue for the whole bit.

In short, I basically went looking for the one song I could play pretty much anywhere and get people excited, but without shading into pop music. Success? Well, it seems like it!

Thanks for the WALRUS, it was a lot of fun.

Thanks for running this! Was fun
I really like how the results were completely different across the two reviewers, interesting data there

Felt my last round was kinda weak. But I wanted to use the "tris likes piano" loophole

Also noticed I was the only contestant to bump up from dropping lowest submission, whose smiling now? (not me actually cause its about the songs we heard along the way, but you get it)

Hope to get mine rolling again soon, sorry about the deficiency
