Feels kinda scumsided on the low end, especially if a PR dies N1 or has to claim early.

The balance probably isn't awful, but the swing is always gonna be high if you're concentrating power in so few roles.

It is definitely very swingy, yes. If the PR's survive for too long scum win chances go down alot. If the PR's die Night 1 and Night 2 town is in a tough situation. However, town is unlikely to win on PR's alone, unless scum plays badly. And unless town plays terribly or is really unlucky there should at least one result coming in from Night 1(from the Cop, or the Watcher watching the Cop, if known) or later(Watcher)
I gave town extra points for the Watcher/Cop investigative combination, that's why it might seem scumsided. Adding more town power would be probably a mistake.

I'm wondering if there's a way to mitigate swing without really adding much town power.

Callforjudgement made a game with a N1 Universal Backup, which is a pretty heavy-handed way to do it; I feel like that wouldn't affect balance much outside of mitigating the worst case. How would you feel about doing something like that?

And if it is the Watcher, even worse. The watcher WILL be killed Night 1, the cop will get a result and there is STILL a watcher. If the result is "guilty" then scum will find itself at a very uncomfortable position. At Day 4, it will be 7v1 if the day 1 elim was town, and already lost if the day 1 elim was Mafia. If the Watcher conceals themselves enough then they might even survive, by scum not anticipating another Watcher with a guilty.
No, I do not want to reward town for misplays that much.
The worst situation does not appear if town claims - it appears when the Town Cop does not claim and dies Night 1.

Technically the gunsmith's result on the backup cop should be "no result" and not "your target has a gun" :P

This seems like an improvement, it solves the chance of very pro-scum swing. I'm still a little worried about pro-town swing where the cop gets a guilty N1, then the scum shoot the cop N2 because they have no other tools to deal with it and don't know the cop is odd-night, and then they get watcher guiltied. I see that you've already put the ninja in, ostensibly for this purpose, but given how much more popular tracker is than watcher, people may not get the message.

Simple watcher would be a solution to that, but that gives the watcher vanilla cop-like powers which I don't really like. Making the cop also ascetic is another option, or you could have some way for the scum to see the watcher coming. I don't hate giving scum either a backup watcher or a watcher enabler (they probably wouldn't need the backup gunsmith in that case). Or even just an informed "there is a town watcher". Do you like any of these?

I'm conflicted.

On the one hand, this is an incredibly innovative way to provide scum the information they need without telling them the setup.

On the other hand, 90% of players are going to look at that role PM and go ಠ_ಠ and maybe 40% of them are actually going to read it through the whole way. And many of them, I suspect, are going to be confused or annoyed. That said, I think it would be manageable as long as you post the role PM's in the scum PT.

I'm gonna check with implosion and see if this feels too non-normal to exist in a normal game. I'm on the fence.

I am also going to think twice about it, specifically if I built in any clues that should not exist... like that there is no role like Ascetic Townie.

In terms of individual bits of information, this one worries me, because the cop exists but it does have a modifier:

I think there is absolutely no way to accurately predict how scum will react to getting that role PM. Some of them will think that it's intended as a fakeclaim for them. Some of them will ignore it completely and just consider it too much work to think about. Some of them will think that it's a puzzle that they can solve immediately to learn the whole setup. Some of them will misread things because it's so convoluted. Some of them will try to speculate deeply on exactly why this is in their role PM and none of them will be able to figure it out because it's there because of an extremely specific thing that came up during setup design.

I think this is just a design antipattern. There's a little problem in the setup, which is that the scum might mistakenly shoot the claimed cop n2. All of the solutions S_S suggested are appropriately small modifications to address this small problem; making one of the mafia informed with a small essay of text is not the right solution to solve that problem.

I don't think I am a fan of the 30-line informed pm proposed in the current setup. It feels too... gimmicky. Also, as a player, I would not appreciate getting something that seems to amount to a logic puzzle. If you don't want to flat out give the information at the beginning of the game, you could do a N1 informed that learns about the watcher.

Ok. This should fix the remaining problems. However, this info will obviously boost scum win chances. I changed the Gunsmith to Odd-Night and the Backup to Night 3.
(If the Gunsmith dies Day 1... well that's a horrible error by scum with potentially catastrophic results, but these are well deserved)

Sorry. I think it's good.

I might suggest adding the (You will get "no result" if this action is blocked.) clause to all of the investigative roles (including the gunsmiths), but that's minor, and either way /pass.
