This shows how you can save a ladder. In this case black wants to play at b to keep the ladder going. But if white has a stone at a then it breaks out. This is known as a ladder breaker. Playing out a broken ladder is usually awful for you because all the stones you use to keep taking it can be captured with double ataris.
