"Well, they have good cats now. Good cats we knew ─ know ─ to take care of things. Even if they've got feathers for brains half the time, you can't forget some things. Like loyalty, and what it really means to be a warrior."

The tom purred, clearly amused by his once-apprentice. "You would have made a fine warrior, Tinyfrost. All of this fire in you! There wouldn't have been a cat who could take you in battle."

Huffing, she regarded herself, tail gesturing at her small frame. "Like this? Really? I'm the size of an apprentice. We both know it was for the best that I was not. And besides, someone had to keep you in check. And no one else could've done it but me! They all thought the stars of you, and no one could dare to question Harecloud."

"But you, of course. For all the bad choices that I made?"

Tinyfrost heard the sarcasm in his tone, and knew he rarely made them in his life. She conceded with a quieter purr. "All of them. Having me as an apprentice most of all."

The silence sitting between Tinyfrost and Harecloud was a suffocating web, wrapped thick around both cats.

Neither could bring themselves to break it, not for this death. It was a unique sort of pain, beyond the loss of the others. This one struck close to heart, and they could only watch as the twice-living gather around the body. Mangled and broken in death, it looked smaller than it really was.

So, rather than curse the Dark Forest, they watched. Nothing but watching and waiting in death, StarClan’s collapsing paradise offering less comfort than ever before.
