LoL isn't quite as bad as DotA on WC3 used to be, but I've never understood why people's first response to someone on their team dying a few too many times is, "YOU SUCK, YOU MOTHER [insert explicit sexual act]ING [insert racial slur] [insert gay slur]." Why not be a decent human being and offer some suggestions so they can actually improve? I understand. It's frustrating to play with a feeder, but that's no excuse to be a horrendous bigoted jerk to another person.
I've been playing online games since Quake, and while I agree that Dota players are their own special breed of asshole, I have encountered similar heckling in team RTS play. I think the problem is that Dota combines the MMORPG crowd with the hardcore RTS crowd. Scary. I kind of get the frustration that a bad player on your team can throw a 45 minute game for you, but... they take it to a weird level..subgenius wrote:Yeah, I get that, but it's an ugly way to treat people who are just trying to play a game and would probably do their best to follow advice if it were given. Obviously, racist name calling is pretty common on the internet, but DotA variants are the only games I've seen where a single person is often targeted for an entire 40 minute game. That's not the reason I stopped playing, but it always bothered me, and no, I was usually not the one being called names. Although, that is one of the reasons I usually picked support characters. I didn't like the pressure of picking a carry character.
And Tripod, I've been playing online games of all sorts since the days of BBS's. DotA games are way worse than anything else I've played.
You're a gentleman among swine, sir.BrutalAztecs wrote:I am one of those people who will give suggestions to shitty players when they are on my team and sometimes even white knight for them if an idiot is harassing. But generally I get met with anger/animosity at the notion that anything they are doing wrong is a poor play. People don't want to be helped because they are exposed to this "blame someone else" approach in so many rooms that they automatically do it when they play bad. "It's not my fault I was the first 3 deaths of the game - it was my lanemate for not backing me up!"
This. 1000 times this.subgenius wrote:I understand it, and I feel the same way sometimes, but people need to get grip.
I can totally see that with playing at a high level, where wins and losses actually matter. I can sympathize with getting upset about your win/loss record being tarnished by a bad player. However in the casual DotA environment, it's a community issue when a large part of the veteran player base acts like assholes about new/bad players. No one is playing for keeps in casual DotA. People in casual who feel like their teammates are (removed) and then rage about it for 40 minutes are representative of a problem with the community, not the game. If you have no tolerance for people who aren't as good as you or maybe just aren't good at the game in general (for whatever reason), you shouldn't be playing casual DotA. Sorry. Some of us are here to have fun, not to listen to people spew vitriol and hear bullshit excuses about why they keep feeding.BrutalAztecs wrote:The issue is more a gameplay issue than a community issue. Any time one person can ruin a session there is going to be anger and finger pointing. This applies to team RTS's, high level MMO play, and DotA type games moreso than any other.
But people are investing 30-60 minutes in a game that can be severely ruined by a single person. LoL is now banning leavers, which forces players to waste time in clearly unsuccessful games with minimal chance of positive return. My personal favorites are 2x feeders who rack up 10 deaths in 25 minutes but decline /surrenders because "if we just work together we can do this guys."Untrod Tripod wrote:However in the casual DotA environment, it's a community issue when a large part of the veteran player base acts like assholes about new/bad players. I totally get this and agree with you there. The frustration level being higher in an RTS makes sense. However...it's one thing to be upset, and it's another thing to rage for 20 minutes straight. Banning leavers, as per your example, clearly is not the answer. There probably isn't a good answer, but I'm positive that raging at bad players is nowhere close to optimal.Nuwen wrote:But people are investing 30-60 minutes in a game that can be severely ruined by a single person. Since we are looking at this from a casual perspective, let's assume the average player will only have time for two or three games per session. You've effectively ruined half or a third of four other casual players' nights.
RTS games are all about understanding economic mechanics. If you understood those mechanics, you would be very, very eager to learn how to stop shooting yourself and your team in the foot. Help and advice are nice, but no one can learn/play a game for you. Use every resource at your disposal.
Um I'm pretty sure the whole point of most online games is just abusing people incredibly hardsubgenius wrote:I toyed around with LoL for awhile and enjoyed it, but I hate the communities around DotA games so much. I reserve my venom for leavers, those mother-loving-whore-sons.
EDIT: My favorite hero was Kayle. I didn't get a ton of kills with her, but I did save a lot of team mates with her ultimate and helped chase down a lot of enemies with her heal/speed boost and slowing attack.
um, LOL? I doubt you've played many mainstream internet games then.subgenius wrote:but DotA variants are the only games I've seen where a single person is often targeted for an entire 40 minute game.
I'm not sure whether or not you're joking, but obviously some people actually think this. I don't understand people who derive their enjoyment from shitting on other people's good time, and I don't particularly want to.ortolan wrote: Um I'm pretty sure the whole point of most online games is just abusing people incredibly hard
I've played plenty of mainstream internet games, but now that I've thought about it a little bit more, the only other game that I can come up with where I've seen people get as routinely belligerent as DotA and team RTS's is, strangely, Hearts on Yahoo games. Christ, those people would get mad if they felt like you weren't playing correctly. Admittedly, there are FPS servers that might approach the same level of ugliness as a DotA game, but it's pretty easy to find servers where it doesn't happen or isn't tolerated. MMOs can sometimes get ugly, but it's a lot rarer and usually doesn't last as long since either the aggressor or newb gets tired of the situation and leaves.ortolan wrote: um, LOL? Oh hey a ladder player!mb53 wrote:I play wc3 a lot, but hate DotA. Actually, no. I hate people who play DotA.
I played LoL for about a month or 2, then stopped because I lagged to the point of not being able to play.
