I was considering setups for a 'promotional mafia', in which all pro-town roles start as townies but can upgrade up the ranks to nurses and rookie cops, and onward to even better roles based on the amount of posting or saying keywords that trigger a promotion. The more active the townies are, the better their chances of recieving a promotion.
That sound good? Been done before?"It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill with rope and a slim majority."

Just in to check if there has ever been aYtmndtheme game? I know certain bits have been taken from there before, I just don't know if there's been one entirely based around that.
Has there been aRanma 1/2mafia orFruits Basketgame?
How aboutFather Tedmafia, I'd really want to do that, along with aFawlty Towersgame.
All of these would have various roles which are localised to the characters in them, very flavour based but not to the extent that there'd be anything overly confusing.
And I'd get to cut loose on flavour sequences. 8)
If anyone could tell me whether any of these have been done before (if they have, how feasible an alternative version could be) it'd be much appreciated.- mikeburnfire

I'd be up for a Ranma game. That show was a staple of my childhood."It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill with rope and a slim majority."

Just curious as to whether there've been games based on any of the following themes in the past...
Dune
His Dark Materials
The Dark Is Rising
Discworld
Heroes and villains (ie. across many books/movies/games)
Monkey Island
Also, has anyone ever tried a game wherein the players all get to have two accounts that can play? I have a couple ideas for something like that, I think it could work...- stark

While I'm not really ready to mod I am interested and would like to reserve:
The Goonies Mafia (based on the 1985 Steven Spielberg action/adventure movie.) I'd like to run this as a regular mini (maybe as my first one).
Oz Mafia (based on the HBO prison drama - everyone is scum!!). This would be far more complex (and quite large) considering the number of characters and the various allegiences in the show. I see multiple mafias and possibly multiple win conditions, crazy interactions between staff and inmates, a real blur between town and mafia.
Woud anyone be interested in playing either of those?
And while I'm here (and I haven't been able to find anywhere else to ask it): how time consuming is moderating?
I realise it will vary between games, depending on size and complexity, but an estimate on the required effort for a regular mini and a regular game would be nice.- Fiasco

Has there ever been a game based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft? (You know, Cthulhu and friends.) Would anyone be interested in playing such a game?
I have some detailed plans already and am almost in the "please review my setup" stage... it's too big for me to mod in the near future, though.
(If I stop playing mafia before then, and someone else wants something to steal ideas from for their own Lovecraft mafia game, please PM me; I'll probably still look at the site every once in a while.)"I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken." - Oliver Cromwell- Phoebus

In my experience, it really comes in spurts. Most of the time you're just watching the thread religiously and making sure you don't need to do anything or waiting for people to send you night choices. A vote count usually only takes a few minutes, more for the first count of early Days. (Because there are generally more votes on more different people, and you don't have a past count to copy and paste. The Count-Counter 2000 was designed to cut that time, but the server it's on is down at the moment and I'll need to arrange somewhere else to put it up.) Doing the game mechanics behind a deathscene isn't too bad, certainly not in a regular game, but if you want to write a halfway decent deathscene, it'll take some effort.Passdog wrote:And while I'm here (and I haven't been able to find anywhere else to ask it): how time consuming is moderating?

(For future reference, Mafia Discussion can be used about both modding and playing; feel free to start a new thread if you don't see one about your question.)- JechtMurray

And of course, there's all the time spent preparing the game in the first place!
I really like writing flavour, and making sure everything has a strong presentation and asthetically pleasing will take me more time than a typical game.
There's been some games I've seen that are just really lazy (no names) that just have 1 liners for lynch scenes/day kills/morning scenes etc, and unless there's a reasonable reason for it, I don't like that. (talking theme games here) It can also lead to game confusion and a culling of interest.
On the other hand, seeing a thing of beauty like the Gaslight Mafia on Misetings can only be a good thing for both players and spectators. (I'm just a non-signed up lurker of that site I'm afraid)
I'm sure it's a strong reason to keep a game running if you know that every single action in the game performed is going to have a nicely scripted PM/in thread consequence.
Having not actually modded on this site before, could someone give me the idiot's guide to announcing/starting games here? There seems to be a whole lot of games being had, and I'd like to have a dependable time slot for which I can expect to be ready for.
I'm intending running a Ranma 1/2 themed 12 man game, and if there seems to be some interest, a general Anime themed bigger game(my masterpiece of flavour).
Note that these games should be easily accessible to non-watchers of strange cartoons.- inHimshallibe

I would also like a reservation for the ranma game, I'm running one based on ranma on a different site and would be interested in seeing where you take it.inHimshallibe wrote:

HURRAH! EDIT!: Also, I'd provide relevant links to character info.

I'm claiming "Music of Squaresoft" (Square?/Square-Enix?) as a theme (although it probably won't be run for a couple months). I'm also looking for a comoddish type person to bounce some ideas off of and to work out some kinks-obviously experience with games like Final Fantasy, Xenogears, and Chrono Trigger would be helpful.I replaced into Chess Mafia for 6 months, and all I got was a win and this lousy sig.- JechtMurray

I wouldn't mind helping with this, I just think I might want to play in it instead.- Karo

Lol chamber, i was just about to mention your ranma 1/2 game.
There was a "Dunwich Horror" (by Lovecraft) game on MTGNews a while ago (my first mafia game)... i'll see if i can find it... Here it is!
Well, that's all for now..."It's not a logical inconsistency. B can't be correct because then C would be, but it doesn't go the other way - there's nothing wrong with C being correct. Aside from Twomz saying otherwise." --Mith- Twomz

K, so i've had this crazy idea for a mafia game... "Spectator Mafia." It would be a pretty normal game, except for the fact that people outside the game can post on the thread, and are incouraged to do so... and the mafia would be able to talk via PM during the day was well as night, to speed up the night time choices.
Is that a good idea, or a bad one?"It's not a logical inconsistency. B can't be correct because then C would be, but it doesn't go the other way - there's nothing wrong with C being correct. Aside from Twomz saying otherwise." --Mith- Puzzle

Is that a good idea, or a bad one?For now, I'll ask Thoth to come up with reasons why I should be voting for him, and I'd like him to respond to those.
