General Rules:

For you Munchkins out there:
Rules are subject to addition, deletion, or change any time. If you try to abuse some technicality, I will make that technicality cease to exist. There are several common sense rules that are implicitly here that I didn't bother writing. When in doubt, PM the mod. Though be careful with your answer: directly quoting PM's from the mod (including the role PM) or impersonating the mod in game (by pretending I have "edited" a post I have not) is
strictly forbidden.
Paraphrasing is fine, as long as there's room for doubt. Again, common sense.

Play to your win condition:
I want you all to have fun, but you must always be trying to secure a win for your faction. Failure to do so might get you banned from all mafia games on-site, not just this one. Getting modkilled will turn you to a dead neutral survivor, so incurring a modkill is always playing against your factions wincon. Do not test my patience on this issue; I have none.

Roll with the punches, but don't be a douche:
This is a game where some people want you dead, and there's a certain degree of hostility inherent in the premise. “Attack the case, not the player” is a good guideline, but the line is thin and I'm not interested in playing baby-sitter.

However, there are certain boundaries you must respect. My general anti-harassment rule can be roughly stated as, “If it'd be illegal to fire someone for, it's forbidden to insult someone for.” To be more specific, insulting someone based on (or simply an insult including reference to) culture, gender, sexual orientation, income, or similar non-mafia related things is expressly prohibited, with punishments up to and including forced replacements/modkills on the FIRST OFFENSE. You guys probably know I'm pretty easy-going, and you probably don't know how absolutely small my tolerance is for this sort of behavior. This is me warning you.

Lynching:
It takes a full majority to lynch or to no-lynch. If there is no one with a majority at deadline, it's no-lynch. No-lynch does not take any fewer votes to achieve than a normal lynch.

First rule about ongoing games:
Don't talk about this game anywhere else, and don't talk about other ongoing games here. ESPECIALLY don't share QT links with anyone.

Mistakes:
Everybody makes them. Call out vote count mistakes with a bolded note in thread. All other mistakes should be pointed out discreetly via PM.

Activity:
I will prod a player after 48 hours of inactivity. Prods can only be 'picked up' by actually posting in thread – a response to me will not cut it. Players will be replaced upon receiving their third prod, or if they take more than 48 hours to respond to a prod. (However, one prod on your record is removed for each full game Day you participate in.) Players are also free to request replacement at any time. I will not count Saturday hours for activity.

V/LA:
Declaring V/LA (Vacation/Limited Access) freezes your activity clock. It starts ticking on midnight the day AFTER the end date you've given.

Kills:
I will accept kills that are either bolded in the scum QT, or sent via PM. If I receive multiple kill orders, I will use the most recent one. You can only submit a kill order you yourself are carrying out. If I receive no kill orders all night, no kill will happen.

Deadlines:
Deadlines will be two weeks for all Days. I will extend this only in extreme circumstances. Nights will be 72 hours from when the lynch scene is posted.

Votes:
Votes must be bold, and be on the start of a new line. A vote inside a paragraph almost certainly won't count (unless I think you're deliberately abusing this policy – you should never PURPOSEFULLY place your vote in a paragraph). Unvotes are nice but not necessary. Don't play 'vote tricks' – whether you voted for someone or not is ultimately for me to decide, not you.

If the Mod said you're alive, you're alive:
I will not end the day if the number of votes stated in the last VC + the number of additional votes is not great enough to lynch - I won't penalize the town for a mod error.

To put this otherwise, if I make a mistake in the vote-count, point it out immediately, but UNTIL I fix it, someone will only be lynched if BOTH the actual vote total AND the vote counts agree they should be lynched. This ensures that someone doesn't get accidentally hammered because of bad mod information.

My color:
is
blue
. Don't use it. Also, no invisible/small text, and no quoting the mods PM's. (Note that
dark blue
is the color of the Forces of Night, and I will have no qualms about blue/dark blue being used to signify the forces of Night in VCA.)

Bah?:
No bah. When you die, you're dead. There will be a fun dead QT though. (Yes, I know I'm a hypocrite who loves bah posts himself but doesn't allow them.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

Twilight:
Standard site interpretation. If a majority is ever reached, it's twilight. Anyone can talk, including the about-to-die person, but all votes after the hammer don't count.

Abarat Mafia Rules:

Spyrex is my backup mod. Note that he is not a co-mod, so you don't need to do stuff like cc-ing him into every pm you send. I can run Abarat alone provided I'm here. Contact Spyrex only if an issue is hanging for more than 48 hours (a requested VC, a PM, etc.) or if I have a planned absence where I specifically announce to send things to Spyrex.

This game is a battle between 10 members of the Forces of
Day
and 3 members of the Forces of
Night.
As a consequence of it's two-faction nature, there are no Jesters, Lynchers, Cultists, or Survivors. No player (except a modkilled one) will have their win condition change from what it was at the start of the game.

This game will involve the Grand Council of the Hours attempting to find the members of the forces of night. "Day" and "Night" don't make sense in this context - after all, the entire game takes place on the Yebba Dim Day, where it is perpetually eight in the evening. As such, the game will be divided between Sessions of the Grand Council of the Hours, and Recesses. These will function as "Day" and "Night" respectively.

Role PM's are Abarat flavored. I have tried to make them fit thematically with the story – but note that I reserve the right to interpret the story differently / make some roles not align with the story if I believe doing so is crucial to the game balance.

The Forces of Night have at least three fakeclaims, each with flavor quotes and pictures (if a picture under that name is on the site linked below). As such, you are free to discuss these things in game, but keep in mind they have very marginal value to scumhunting. (Remember that "discuss" means just that, and is not license to directly quote your role PM!)

Some role PM's have pictures. I have used this process: I went to this website and searched the name of the character. If they had a picture, I used it. If they did not, no picture is included. Again, the pictures or lack thereof are not a scumhunting tool.

Finally, remember that theme games are the spot for two things: games given the flavor of some non-mafia thing, or games with severe mechanics changes. The fact that I am obviously embracing the first does not necessarily preclude me from indulging in the second.

'Kiss Curl' Carlotti is not in this game, but if he was, his PM would look like this:

Image

He had been a gambler of some notoriety, but had lost his tongue and his middle toes in a bet many years before and had sworn off gambling thereafter.

You are
'Kiss Curl' Carlotti, the Ex-Gambler
. For years, you lived for the thrill of risk. But you bit off more than you could chew, and lost your tongue and middle toes. Now, you've calmed down and are seeking to do a sort of penance for your old lifestyle. Joining the search for Finnegan Hobb was one way. Now, you're looking to assist the Grand Council of the Hours in squashing the over-ambitious Forces of Night. You cannot speak, of course, and there's no telling whether the Council will trust you or not. But you have to try.

Passive Ability: Mute

“What is your destination, sir?” the worm said, all politeness.

Carlotti shook his head.

“Don’t deny me now,” the dragon went on, its terrible teeth perilously close to poor Carlotti’s head, as though in an instant it would behead him.

“You’ll get no answers from him,” said Geneva, glancing around to locate her sword. “He has no tongue.”

You may post nothing in the thread but “vote: X” and “unvote:X”, where X is a player currently living in the game. You may only do each of these once an hour.

You are
Day
aligned. You win when the Forces of Night have been completely eliminated. Please confirm by responding to this PM with your role name.

“The Day is words and rage.
The Day is order, earth and gold.
It is the philosophers in their cities;
It is the map-makers in their wastelands.
It is roads and milestones,
It is panic, laughter and sobriety;
White, and all enumerated things.
It is flesh; it is revenge; it is visibility.

The Night is blue and black.
The Night is silence, poetry and love.
It is the dancers in their grove of bones.
It is all transforming things.
It is fate, it is freedom. It is masks and silver and ambiguity,
It is blood; it is forgiveness; It is the invisible music of instinct.”

---Fasher Demerondo,
The Division of the Hours

The poem was engraved into a giant marble wall in the lobby of the Grand Council of the Hours. It was one of Kiss-Curl Carlotti's favorites. It was a reminder of the very essence of the islands. Day on one side, Night on the other. You couldn't have the Abarat without both of them, in balance.

Balance. And there was the issue. The balance was being disrupted. It had been subtle, at first. Gorgossium had always defended their borders vigilantly, and no one on the Abarat begrudged them for dominion over the bleak Hour of Midnight, clothed in red mist and full of the terrors one would expect from the witching hour.

But a terrible wave was building in Gorgossium, and people all around the Abarat were begining to see the crest. Their dreams were unsettling and dreadful. Men would wake up with a start, fear in their hearts and cloying darkness on their tongue. Cartlotti had lost his own tongue years ago, but even the terror of that moment did not compare to the beast weighing down his soul when he went to sleep.

The Grand Council of the Hours was slow to awaken, but when it was roused it had a terrible efficiency behind it. It had called representatives from all of the Hours to a meeting. The subject wasn't specified, but everyone knew what it was.
The banners of war are being flown in our dreams, and we must muster in the waking world.

Carlotti brushed the marble wall with his fingertips. Silence, poetry, and love.

Carlotti was a silent man. He had always thought of retiring on a Night hour. But his dreams were in the Night of silence, poetry, and love, and the snarling creature in his mind was borne of a much different darkness. So Carlotti had come to testify -in writing, of course – in favor of war.

There were many like him. People who had seen too much to passively let Night take them sleeping. But most of them had a cautious optimism about the war. Carlotti, though, had too much of the soft Night in him. War could deliver him from what Night had become, but it would never give him back the Night he had lost. And so he sat on a bench, alone in the majestic hall, and wept.

It is blood; it is forgiveness; It is the invisible music of instinct.

And with Night gone, there would be no forgiveness, would there?

Carlotti heard a single muffled step behind him. In his desire to be alone, he had forgotten about his safety. He didn't even get a chance to see who it was. All he saw was the gloved hand, and the knife.

A single thrust was all that was needed. But Carlotti couldn't help but smile. His dreams would be his again. He could dance in the grove of bones.

Silence. Poetry. Love. All of them bled out of Carlotti and puddled on the cold floor of the Council lobby. One more sign in a swelling sea of omens that it was time for war.

The Chamber of Dread and Compulsion.

About the only thing you could get two people living on the Yebba Dim Day to agree on was that the chamber existed. But speculation was wild as to it's function. Some said it was full of instruments of torture, the mailed fist behind the Council's smiling face. Others said it was the home of some mysterious Old Abaratian power, found during the building of the Council chambers and sequestered away. One thief, surreptitiously recruiting on a nearby street-corrner, posited that it was all a ruse and the treasures of Day were within. But for all the speculation, no one knew for sure. It was a locked door with no visible keyhole. No amount of force could barge it open.

Or so you had heard. But when you tried the door with your fingertips, it glided open as though it was nothing more than a veil.

The impulse to enter the chamber was sudden. It seemed to skip right past your head and go to your feet. Compulsion. But it didn't seem like it then. You were just walking.

Behind the door was a branching set of three hallways. You pick one without thought. Another branch. Another choice. As you walk along, the hallways begin to slope downwards. The light is leached away. Another branch. Another choice. Soon, there's no light at all. It doesn't matter. Your body knows the way. Another branch. Another choice. It's getting stuffy and confining. Another branch. Another choice. It's uncomfortably hot. Another branch. Another choice. A choice. A choice. A choice--

You can't see a thing, but you can feel the immense size of the room you entered. A breeze dances across your face. There's something in front of you. Your prying, hesitant fingers reveal it to be a chair, carved entirely out of a solid piece of stone.

As you sit down, the strange force motivating you disappears all at once. This scares you more than losing control of your limbs. At least that had purpose. Now...where are you?

“Hello.” The voice was distorted and metallic, and seemed to come from every corner of the giant room at once. “We are the Moderator.”

You hear muffled gasps of surprise flare up, tiny candles of sound in the oppressive aural darkness of the chamber. It's not just you and the Moderator.

“Day has never advocated the complete destruction of Night. It is Night that gives Day meaning. They should walk in balance. And in better times than these, Night agreed. This is when we were forged.

When each time is to it's Hour and no more, we are dormant. But when the pendulum swings too far, we awaken. And we moderate.

Long ago, the powers of Abarat convened and gave us two powers. The first is the power to call. When it is necessary to correct the course of the Abarat, the Council will call a meeting. And when people arrive to the Council, some will feel the pull of the Chamber. Day and Night – anyone could be summoned. And here they will sit, and they will judge.”

Silence. Then, a tentative voice from the dark - “
We
will judge?”

“Yes. Day and Night sit together, but they cannot know who they are speaking to. This was one of the rules burned in to us in the fire of our creation. This is not a court where thuggishness and numbers carry the day. You must listen instead to the words of your peers. Listen, and decide. We will not accept judgment of any other sort.

The Grand Council of the Hours is now in session.”

The First Session of the Grand Council of the Hours has begun.

With 13 alive, it takes 7 to lynch.

Automatic Termination of the First Session(expired on 2011-12-02 00:30:00)

You can't just paraphrase a role PM?

If you're really worried, do this: write a summary of the explanation behind why you're a miller, with any details mentioned in your role PM. Copy and paste it into a PM to hitogoroshi and/or AIM conversation. Ask, "Am I allowed to post this in the thread?" Hit send. Wait for hito's reply. Make whatever modifications necessary. Then post your summary in the thread.
