......Tanky? ._.
I thought that was common. You can go full tank depending on where your role in the team is but if you're solo top you want some slight ap at least. Rylai's is good. I'd only get them after I had my core though. I usually go sunfire cape - rylai's - warmog's and then just do what I feel like I should because I'm OP as fuck by then.First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.- hitogoroshi

one of shens big strengths is that he is versatile as all fuck with items. he's happy with pretty much anything so you can itemize sooo reactively
good shen opens are dorans shield against ad tops and mantle + pots against ap. boots pots is also an option in some matchups.
against AD, generally I'll get my boots, and then angle for boots 2 (still generally mercs on account of mercs rule, even against ad top) and aegis/SFC. aegis is super useful, but if you ever back with giants belt money, just get the giants belt. remember finishing sunfire is NOT a priority. you don't get sunfire cape because it's a good item, you get sunfire cape because giants belt and chain vest are both *amazing* items and SFC lets you stick them in the same slot. from there just kinda wing it - stuff like banshees, fon, rylais, etc.
against AP is really fun. aegis has a mantle in it too. so often times I'll open mantle + mantle + boots. you have NO IDEA how infuriating this is for ap tops. then finish the aegis and treads. from there, reactively, basically the same list as before.
there are also some nonstandard builds you can use to react to weird shit - atmogs shen is good if you have 3k your first back, sorc/guise shen makes your lane a MASSACRE when you need it to be (this hurts his teamfighting, so apply sparingly, but if you're in a "well, if top doesn't win, they don't have a chance" situation consider it), and occasionally you can go for the magical boots ruby ruby ruby belt belt build for winners.
oh also randuins is good sometimes and get a hog if you plan on doing it, I dunno I don't get randuins much but it's a good item and really I should"Don’t buy a dozen eggs if you just want a hardboiled egg. Don’t buy a head of lettuce if you just want a salad. Don’t buy eggs and lettuce if you want egg salad because those are not the right ingredients." -Julius Bloop- mykonian

I've been trying to go for atmogs shen pretty much all the time, the ap part simply doesn't have such an appeal for me. The main advantage is that Shen isn't punished as much as some other champs by investing heavily in health and no damage. If you are playing the long game, can't go wrong with an early heart of gold, as Randuins is going to be nice for you in time and the gp10 helps. Atmas after all that to make you a threat for quite a while and you are the scary guy everybody seems to be talking about.Surrender, imagine and of course wear something nice.- Espeonage

I ask only because I have found that I never build him the same. Like when I have something else on my team that is tanky like a Vlad mid or a Rammus jungle or a heap of hard to kill champs I'll start building him AS Off Tank for no reason other than I've been told previously that Wit's End is a great item for him when played from top and it creates some item synergy. Also had a game recently against a Karthus and Vlad so I built myself that new Maw item that build out of hex. We lost the game but I was actually able to give out some damage because my carries were playing like shit. Also, I usually get a HoG to help with gold as it gives me freedom to go gank without losing out on gold overmuch. So should I be building that into Solari or Randuin's?Don't @ me.- mykonian

Randuin's. Solari is a sorry item which has to do if you don't have money. Randuins is really really awesome. You have money up top, a whole lane to yourself, and as tank will take your assists when people fall. There really is no excuse to build Locket (it gives nothing you really want in endgame, Randuins gives a lot that you really want in endgame, most specifically a large AS debuff)Surrender, imagine and of course wear something nice.- quadz08

So apparently there is a new type of Ultimate Bravery called Nightmare. Where you get ultimate bravery sets but also have to complete objectives as well.
Just did two of those. Managed to make it past 35 minutes both times. In the first we had to say CHANGE PLACES every five minutes and go to a random lane. So only junglers can gank and you sometimes end up with noone in a lane.
And the second one, Save the Queen. One person can't die but they must stay within one level of everyone else. We made it to 40 minutes, I was the queen as Kayle. Managed to not die and pick up a triple kill as well.Don't @ me.- Staeg

I usually start this vs aggro supports that are less likely to start with their own pink ward, and if we have a better lane than them; I don't necessarily mind them having a ward in bot lane if we can just sit and farm, and I don't mind them having a ward in bot lane as long as they aren't taking out mine with them.
Brandi wrote:2. Faerie Charm + 1 Vision Ward + 2 Sight Wards + 1 Red Pot
I usually start this on Soraka, would consider it on Taric and Sona as well. Pinks are excellent for early brush control.
I usually start charm + 3 green + 3 health pots on Janna and other lower-sustain supports.
Brandi wrote:Which is better for what situation?
I hear some say that #2 is the only correct option, but I feel that...you don't usually need a vision ward as early, because there's no need to have a ward on dragon that early. It's very rare for a jungler to go for dragon pre-6. And usually a support wants to go back when they can afford a philo stone and a few more wards. Plus with more wards, you have more warding options.
I feel that I haven't seen much talk on this anywhere... and I'm actually not quite sure when I should be vision warding at the start of the game (other than if they have a stealth champ such as shaco/evelynn/twitch.)
The early pink ward isn't for dragon - the early pink ward is to ensure brush control, which is especially important against aggro supports like blitz/cow. Brush control is underrated and overlooked far too easily. Having someone in range of you that you can't see who can make your life a living hell if they go on you is an extraordinarily dangerous and difficult situation.
Brandi wrote:I had a friend of mine yell at me for not starting with a vision ward from the start, and she wanted to know why I thought 4 sight wards were better. I simply stated the above, and she told me "but you need to kill their wards"
Though whenever she played support, She never had any wards to kill and ended up holding onto her vision ward until mid game.
Again, brush control - people often don't ward their side bushes in bot lane. I tend to put more wards in those side bushes during the laning phase than I do in river/tri-bush. It's scary.
Brandi wrote:I think there are certain reasonings behind choosing between the two options and that it's probably just very situational... but there may be other options as well. (I see some go Charm+3 wards+3 red/2 red 1 blue)
Any thoughts?
People who tend to start with blue pots in bot lane are either looking to put continuous early pressure/poke onto your side of the lane or don't know how to manage their mana properly. I'm pretty sure the third health pot is worth a lot more.
Thanks for your insight JD, I never actually contemplated how useful it would be to start differently with different supports. Probably going to do Charm+3wards+3red with Janna/Lulu now (Probably will help me a ton too, considering how often I have to go back early on these supports because of being harassed down by certain comps.)- Espeonage
