As long as the people you play with realize(see: won't get mad/give tips) you're going to be genuinely fucking awful for awhile it probably is the best way to go about things. *shrug*

It depends on how you learn best. Are you a "throw me in the lake and see if I'll swim" kind of a person, or more of a "well, we'll start with the bathtub first" learner?

I wouldn't say it's either of those extremes
a lot of level 30s have low elos
I've seen worse plays from level 30s sometimes compared to level 5s

No way is universally the best way. Just like how it's not universally best to play against people of a specific skill relative to yourself. You have to play against all of them to improve universally.

I think I agree with Ank here. You've got to do some of everything; playing with and against people who will murderate you is good to see what you need to get better at, while playing against people at your level, etc, will give you a good way to practice those skills in a place that won't lead to you getting fucked over for every mistake (as well as give you a barometer of how good you actually are.)

You have to play against people worse than you because you won't be infinitely punished for experimenting.
You have to play against people the same skill as yourself because then you're forced to strain your skills to earn a win.
You have to play against people better than you because you get exposed to things better players do that you wouldn't think about.

You have to have all 3.

Pssh. Play with level 30s. It works (I got forced into it, so I can say this).

HARSH LEARNING EXPERIENCES.

SAME GOES FOR AGAR.

I can attest to this statement. Playing with 30's makes you learn faster, and you're exposed to better play.

I don't even consider it for the "better" play, its more just because level-30 games and pre-level 30 games have a much different mentality, and getting used to the level 30 meta at an early stage completely changes how you look at things like map objectives, warding and last-hitting. Too many low-level games are decided by snowballing off kills, because people do nothing but focus on them from the start of the game (I can assume Chamber has seen a first blood in lane brushes in top/bot at some point already, something you rarely see in 30 games).

tl;dr: I don't recommend playing with a premade 30s group for the higher skill you'll play, I recommend it to get used to the meta earlier. Having people that can tell you why you fucked up doesn't hurt either.

Yeah, pre-25 the main thing was to get to the bushes first and do 2v2 skirmishes top and bot. The games were mostly decided then and nobody but the mid had over 100 cs when the game was over.

Oh, and don't forget when your 1v2 top ragequits when he realizes the guy who took smite was jungling, and not laning with him.

Good times.

This is pretty much right. The number of smurfs and stuff will assure that you play people that are better than you, and there will always be people equal and lesser skill than you. The major difference of playing with 30's and playing with under-25s is that when you play with 30's you will actually be playing the game the way most people play it: Solo Top and Mid with a jungler and AD carry with a support bottom. Practice in the meta will let you get better within the meta. Running to the bush with blitzcrank/Someone with damage and instagibbing whoever comes near the brush isn't really gonna help you when you get to 30.

I'm appreciative of those that took time to give advice. I've played with lvl 30's before (and again tonight) and just don't enjoy it nearly as much. My main reason for playing is to play with an RL friend, and my main reason for playing with you guys is to catch up to his lvl (16). Having seen those that take the game too seriously, I'll just enjoy the journey for what it is.
Taking a break from the site.

ALL OF THE RANKED DODGES

ALL OF THEM

you'd think people would be willing to at least see what happens instead of taking -10 elo right off the bat, but noooooo

I had an amumu mid once. I thought, what's the worst that could happen. Could've saved that 8-12 elo by dodging.

Not saying annie top is amumu mid-levels of bad, but.

I'd only try it if I knew what the enemy top was and was relatively certain I could win the lane, though. It's not like I was first picking annie top :|

I just realized that my last post probably came off as "annietop is bad but not as bad as amumumid," but it was not intended like that. However, I'd trust the amumu even less if he went "its k guize amumu counters ahri mid".

I can see why they'd be sceptical of it though, since most of the strong top-laners buy Merc Treads at the very least, and a fair few also get Wit's End which would leave them laughing at you in lane.

So where do I start? Are the games against the bots worth anything?

Games against bots can give you a place to practice last hitting / learning what exactly each champion does on a basic level, but they don't really give you a good understanding of the other things.

Starting with them's probably fine, and having people play with you allow you to get some knowledge and such while you do things. From there, against people mayyy be a bit rough without some guidance, but it really depends.
don't you feel silly now?
