Mechanically simple AD Assassins gives us Khazix, who has one skill shot, and one of the simplest decision making trees in the world.

garens ult does more damage with % missing hp
thus you use ignite first as opposed to last to guarantee the kill.
once you're snowballed because you got a brutalizer after 5m because you ingited your lane opponent then you don't need to care that it's on CD because you no longer need it to kill him

Garen does the following depending on lane matchup:

if snowballing: Rush brutalizer and Sunfire
if against AP: rush spectre cowl
if against better scaling opponent like riven, you grab sunfire first, and stuff with cdr...honestly depends how the game is going

your full build is pretty goddamn tanky because your ability to talk half of someone's health with e falls off lategame unless you build glass cannon, and nobody wants a glass cannon garen, because you have to be next to your target to deal damage....

that is to say you can have up to 2 AD items.
Black cleaver is amazing on garen because of the stacks of goodbye armor. infinity edge is also pretty good SPIN 2 CRIT
but generally that 3800 is much better spent on something like a randuins

You aren't a tank. Being bulky and doing no damage does little at all for you, less then the competition (renekton is a nice ad caster as well, better base stats, more cc). You are the top champ with possibly the easiest 100-0 combo. You have a q to run at people. Use it. Then you can hit them. Everybody wants a glass cannon garen that lives long enough to q-e-r.

Yes there's a balance... that's what being a bruiser about, balancing between offensive and defensive stats.

So sure, you can be a wuss garen and build sunfire-randuins-warmogs and go 6-5-6 or something. That basically means you are waiting for the adc to get his 3 items at which point you still tickle and he does hurt. Or you could have BC-LW-randuins at that point, be just as useful, and actually being able to burst a squishy. Depends on how much of a man you are.

Out of sheer bloody-minded curiosity, what possible advantage could there be to playing Garen at the moment given how well Mundo does at all stages of the game? "I can press R once every 100 seconds to maybe get a kill if my opponent misplays terribly" seems to be much worse than Mundo.

is different from

"I can press q and slow someone for potentially tons of damage and then not give a single damn as I go where I please not dying and continually constantly slowing things but not really being a particularly significant damage threat" (note: not arguing that mundo is teh bad, saying he's different)

Not to mention mundo top is not as good as mundo jungle. Mundo top also doesn't counter the everloving fuck out of riven. Garen top does.

you pop your q before you're on top of them and anyone minimally competent will hit you with anything with CC.
Q removes preexisting slows. Not slows that get added. Q is for when you are on top of them, and is good because it silences them.
Yeah sure in the laning trade phase you can use Q to initate, but you go ahead and charge at a riven with your Q and go ahead and get stunned and comboed without being able to do much damage back mr.

Also @RF: mundo counters garen top though, or at least it feels like. Picking garen into anything with ranged poke is just owwie.

picking garen into riven is a great way to make riven players really really mad though

like I flashed into tower and executed a riven and she tried to jump out of it with her dash and obv she died and started whining in allchat and it was fun

Is you opponent meele: Pick Garen.
Is your opponent ranged: Don't pick Garen.

Sure, top lane mundo only kills idiots, but he can just grind people out of lane through sheer attrition, costing them tons of CS, and he'll outscale them anyway. It is better as the caliber of your opponents rise, since you're less likely to get idiot kills against smart players, no matter what champion you're playing, so maybe Garen is better at pubstomping.

Although Garen vs. Mundo is a rather hilarious curb stomp for the doctor as long as he's mastered the art of "do not wait until you're at 10% to press R"
