what is sub-optimal about wasting time looking for town? Especially since you can easily town read someone and give them a pass the entire game and they end up being scum and you lost?

I have seen town reads do just that. That is why you don't give anyone a free pass unless they are somehow mod confirmed or confirmed via investigation of some sort.

I have been town reads only to be scum and win, I have given town reads to scum and lost.

find scum, everyone else is unknown is the safest strategy
