It can replace your lifesteal item and you'd still be fine. A bit uncomfortable without that lifesteal, but still fine. I mean, AP carries life without lifesteal, why can't you?

Typically AP carries aren't the ones getting focused out and instagibbed unless they're super far ahead.

(that belongs to the adc), so most of them can get away without lifesteal because they have a longer period of time to output damage. The adc needs lifesteal to survive being jumped on by literally everyone at all times.

Lifesteal doesn't help against anything that's going to be killing you in the first place unless you have both BT and BotrK finished at which point the people killing you should have plenty of damage to kill your squishy ass. And the people who want to kill you usually have ignite, exhaust, and CC to mess with your autoattacking and therefore your lifesteal. Lifesteal isn't a defensive stat. Never ever.

I can see people saying something about being able to lifesteal off minions/jungle mobs when there isn't a situation you should be fighting in. Lifesteal is a utility stat, not a defensive stat. It's going to be inconvenient but not impossible to manage your hp without lifesteal.

AP carries don't need life steal b/c they don't have to be in the fight as frequently in order to do damage b/c of how spell rotations work (mostly).

Also they tend to have longer range.

Or because they have Zhonyas/Rylais and don't have to be constantly locked in autoattack animation to do damage.

New IE gives you 37% more autoattack damage for 8% more money than new BT. It also makes your next purchase (zeal) something like 10-20% more effective. If, based on your matchup and the state of the game, you think that a 200 hp shield and 15% lifesteal is worth the tradeoff in damage, build BT, but you should still be building IE first most of the time.

Literally everything that Saki says in this thread is wrong so I'm not sure why people still argue with him. Just ignore him, he'll go away eventually.

Mages can unload their spells, walk away from the fight for a bit, and then come back in to be effective. ADCs don't have that option.

Kayle is a mage/ADC/Support/Carry/Jungler/Tank. She excels at everything.

She excels at being a sustained magic damage dealer as jungle/top/mid.

All the other Kayle builds are meh.

Also Diana is worth a mention but she never builds sustained damage anymore.

ADC or APC, the enemy team is going to be all over you (or trying to be all over you).

The '1-spell rotation and play safe' isn't really the case, too.

You're either a) staying with your ADC and trying to peel for him/helping him blow up enemy tank line or b) trying to assassinate someone on the enemy team.

a) You're in just as much danger as your adc is.
b) You're in hell of a lot more danger than your adc is.

An extreme example of case A would be Lux. (Also Syndra/Orianna/Ziggs/Nidalee/Lulu, naming the popular mids)
An extreme example of case B would be Zed. (Also Fizz/Talon/Kat/Diana, etc)

LeBlanc and Karthus are special because LeBlanc can do both and Karthus just walks in and dies to win the fight.

EDIT: Let me clear this up. By no means am I actually calling Quinn bad (my free lane comment earlier was a joke...). Quinn suffers from the same problem as Fiora in terms of why we never see her as FOTM - she's not easy and has a lot of little quirks that stop her from being there, but a good Quinn can wreck face.
