guys, i didn't really want to say this because it's kind of annoying to have to come out every game, but I'm autistic. It's a developmental disability. it makes it a little harder for me to read people and a little harder for others to read me. I have trouble with other things to that are less relevant to this game. It doesn't change my role pm or make me any more or less likely to be scum which is why it's annoying to have to come out about it. If you don't like the way my slot in general has been behaving, or if you think i've been behaving scummy or you don't want me around in lylo where i'll probably mess up, that's fine and you should keep voting me. but if it's just a feeling that there's something off about me, knowing this information might help you recalibrate your reads. If after recalibrating them you still want to vote for me that's fair enough.
After what deathfisaro did, we have less spare time until lylo, and while I'm hopeful the doc circle will be able to pull us through for a town win, Trouser is right that we need to be vigilant. If there's any chance the nuke from orbit group is still around, that should be a priority.
I totally respect your view Plotinus, and I agree that OC's usage was the offensive kind. I've got a bit of my own viewpoint on the whole "political correct" tip toe thing concerning people with mental and physical disabilities; however.
I'm crippled. That's the correct and proper word that describes my condition. I'm not "physically challenged", and I don't get some special score added to my life, so "Handicapped" isn't really a great word for it either. I'm happily married, self sufficient, have a great career, can do everything for myself and need no kind of help to take care of myself. I just have a spinal injury and part of my body doesn't work right. I'm crippled. It sucks but it's like Red says in the Shawshank Redemption: Get busy living or get busy dying. I decided not to do the latter.
Similarly, there are people who are {developmentally} retarded. It's an accurate word. The problem is when it's used as a slur. Calling someone a "retard" is clearly a case. Just like if someone said I was "a cripple", then it would cease to be an accurate descriptor of my condition and instead become a petty childish insult, to which the only proper response is to note that the person using such slurs is obviously immature, at the least, and simply make a note to feel sorry for their small mindedness and take them far less seriously moving forward.
The right response is always to be at peace with who you are and what your life is. You aren't going to magically get another one any time soon, so there's no point wasting any second of the amazing miracle that is sentience on people who haven't yet matured enough to even realize how petty and small they are.
I don't like the casual use of calling people "retard," but where I tend to get more irritable is when people say stuff like "go kill yourself."
Since we're pouring our hearts out here, I've suffered from depression for years. I've mentioned in the thread that I've struggled with suicidal ideation in the past (nothing to do with in-game stuff) and I'm presently on Effexor (and yes, it helps make me less irritable) Part of my depression stems from physical abuse as a child, part of it from being on the receiving end of an abusive marriage to an alcoholic. (You can read some of that in real-time if you dig up the scum QT for Catch-22 Mafia)
But I'm doing so much better now. I'm exercising more, the anti-depressant is working, (when i forget to take it, I become incredibly irritable and suffer violent headaches and nausea) and even though I wouldn't say I'm in a "healthy" relationship now, I certainly don't get as upset as I used to. I made the choice in my life that I'd never allow another person to cause me to doubt my self-worth. I made the choice in life that I'd start losing weight--- not just for my looks, but because I refuse to be 60 years old on an oxygen concentrator at 600 pounds, riding a motorized scooter around walmart. I made the choice in life to never treat anyone the way I was treated by my mother or my ex-wife. It's an uphill battle when you have your sickened brain literally telling you that you're worthless and should die. And some days, the idea of interacting with others was so exhausting that I'd just lay in bed. It wasn't a matter of "just cheer up, man," because I would have if I could. Who would want to feel like that? But I took the steps to fix my problem, both on a biological level (through medication and exercise) and on a mental level (through therapy and positive thinking). Had a huge fight with the girlfriend yesterday, usually that would have sent me into a spiral of self-loathing and apologies. But yesterday, it didn't really bother me in the slightest.
I suffer from clinical depression, but I'm no longer depressed. It's pretty fucking swell.

Yeah well, it looks like we're all messed up. I'm an aspie too (probably why I misread and I'm misread a lot partially) but it's not a crutch. If you're scumread, the onus is on you to figure out why and change it and explain it. I am trying to do that. People will see that I am largely ineffective communicating and receiving and tend not to notice real AtE versus scum AtE. People who work on my wavelength I like more because there is less concern about baggage.
Given your diagnosis as high functioning autistic, I should be seeing more strong opinions. Aspies have a strong sense of right and wrong, overblown some would say. Our emotions might not flow like most and we may miss it in others but playing here is a tool to improve.
The saddest part of the modern {American?} culture is the lie that the vast majority of people are "normal" and perfectly fine. Get any random thousand people and get them to be completely open and honest with you, and you're going to find that the vast majority of people have mental struggles. Sentience is amazing, but we all suffer from the inability to know what it's like for anyone else, and since our mental lives are private, but we judge people based upon only what we can observe, we never really know that everyone else is just as lonely, anxious, scared, frightened and needy as we are. The cultural mandate to keep up appearances and never let anyone know you need help is incredibly damaging to people. We're social creatures and wired to depend upon each other.
