Okay, a follower and a tracker are pretty much the same for balance purposes: they're looking for kills. A voyeur is very close to useless even in closed setups: basically they just tell people what sorts of roles are in the setup, in very vague inconsistent terms, and in an open setup you already know what's going around every night. A vanilla cop is, uh...it can catch fakeclaims, but in this setup there really isn't any reason to fakeclaim, and that's pretty much all it's good for. The vanilla cop and voyeur can at least be named townies, but again, scum has a fakeclaim that weakens even that.
Trackers/followers are fairly weak, vanilla cops and voyeurs are nigh-useless, and that means the universal backup will also get something useless 2/3rds of the time. That's before getting into the fact that only three of those roles even go to town. This town needs a major boost.As I move my vote

Been pondering about a mafialike that goes a bit like this. Balance thoughts? 1/25 chance to lynch correct day 1, if Town/Town is lynched it's 1/3 for day 2.

Eh it was worth a try bc the theme of the setup was only using the roles that are somewhat lacking.

I'm thinking of a game like this:
2 Mafia Goons
1 Bodyguard
6? Vanilla Townies
There are no Nights and Mafia has infinitely many nightkills they can use at any point (except in the first 48 hours). The bodyguard can also choose a protection target at any point, and keeps protecting that person until they select a new one.
Kills on the bodyguard fail (they can only be endgamed), and kills on the person protected by the bodyguard backfire (kill doesn't go through and killer dies).- popsofctown

The role you've come up with isn't what a bodyguard does, and if you're bent on naming it after a standard role, BP Doctor is a closer approximation than bodyguard.
Optimal strategy is to perform as many lynches as possible in the first 48 hours. Are you banning voting during that time period?

I don't think redefining roles in Opens is a big deal, as long as it's not misleading. See, for instance, the Mafia Godfather in 5p Vengeful.

EDIT: Just noticed something: Imagine the Bodyguard gets run up and claims. Mafia can counterclaim him which might lead to the actual Bodyguard getting lynched, after which Mafia can just kill off everybody else quickly. This would turn it into a game of "who's online at the right time". Bodyguard needs to be an Innocent Child too.- LicketyQuickety

I have a question and not a critisism about this. In the first group if SK gets targeted for a NK then Mafia already know who SK is, but they don't kill him. I guess I don't get why there isn't a BP for town as well? If the bodyguard gets lynched, a new bodyguard is randomly selected from the VTs. Only the bodyguard themselves is informed of this.

Before the game, the bodyguards are randomly assigned an order with dice. This ordering is private, so we have bodyguards a, b, c, d, e, f, and g but they don't know which they are only the mod does.
If a, b, and c protect d, and mafia shoots d, then a will die.
If a protects b who protects c who protects d, and the mafia shoot d, c will die.
Only one person will die each night.
Is this balanced? Would it be fun? I was thinking3:10as well, I don't know which would be more balanced. It would make it harder for the mafia to use their nightkill to take who they want to take into LYLO but using the bodyguard ability is optional. A player can protect someone they think is doing a better job for the town than they are, or not protect anybody at all.
Players could try to pair up so that the scummier half of the town has to protect the townier half, but then scum is back to knowing exactly who will die when they shoot and they'll be able to shoot their best option (even if several key town players are ruled out this way) but a player with a townier scumgame they can coast to lylo and have a perfect answer for why they're still alive. I think trying to break it that way would easily lead to a false sense of security. Or paranoia.
Also I think just playing it straight would be fun, only using the bodyguard ability when you want to get nightkilled.The failure mode of clever is asshole.

there won't be chain deaths. one person dies per night. if a protects b protects c protects d and d is shot, then only c dies. not everybody in the chain, just c. or if a, b, and c all protect d and d is shot, then only a dies, not everybody just a.

Optimal play here is for everyone to claim bodyguard and plan a circular chain protect on N1. The mafia will shoot someone, and the person who ends up dying will be the person a mafia goon was supposed to protect. Lynch that mafioso and repeat, win on D3 every time.
