RULES

General Rules:

  1. Site-wide rules always apply here.
  2. If you have a question for me, you can always PM me. If you need to talk to me in thread,
please bold your question like this
so I can locate it better.
  3. You may not use hidden or encrypted text. I decide if the text is small enough to be count as hidden text.
  4. If you have a power to edit/delete your post, don't do it. If you scumslip, just accept it and eat rope.*
  5. Play nice. I really don't mind you guys using bad languages, but don't direct them to the other players. Insult the playstyle, not the player.
  6. Do not EVER discuss the ongoing games in this thread nor discuss this game elsewhere.*
  7. Do not quote the PM that moderator sends you. Paraphrasing is fine till certain level. If you're not sure about it, you're always welcome to ask me first before you post.*
  8. Do not use provable randomization in this game. Saying that you rolled a dice is fine, using dice tag is not.
  9. This is my color. (#408000) Don't use it.

  10. If I find the certain factors/actions damaging the state of the game, I will intervene and/or take action.
  11. Keep the personal complaint, whatever they may be, outside of the wrong VC/information, private by PMing me.
  12. If you break these rules, I have full rights to punish you at my will. This can range from simple warning to modkill/force-replace.
VIOLATING THE RULES WITH A STAR (*) WILL CAUSE AN IMMEDIATE FORCE-REPLACE NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES!

  13. If I feel like it, I always have a full right to add/modify the rules. If I do, I will fully explain the reason behind such action.
  14. Most importantly, have fun!
Voting and Lynching:

  1. You vote by either using bold tag([
    b]Vote:GuyInFreezer[/b
]) or using vote tag ([
    vote]GuyInFreezer[/vote
    ]).
  2. Unvote is not required to change your vote. Also, if it looks like a vote for someone, I will count it. No tricking me!
  3. Lynch happens when the majority votes the same person. Once the player is lynched, the lynchee and the living players may talk until I get back and post the flip.
  4. If the deadline is reached before the lynch has reached, the day will end with
    No Lynch
    .
  5. If you're nightkilled, you may post one information-less "bah" post.
Activity and Deadline:

  1. Deadline for each day is 2 weeks.
  2. If you're on V/LA, please tell me beforehand by either post it in thread (bolded) or PM to me.
  3. If you don't post here for 48 real hours, I will prod you. Failure to receive prod within 24 hours or receiving a 3rd prod will cause force-replacement.
  4. If you do not submit an action before the day ends, it will count as
    No Action
    .
  5. If I have to extend the deadline, I will. If I do, I will post it on thread.

Setup:

Matrix6 (as designed by Cogito Ergo Sum):

ABC
1Town JailkeeperVanilla TownieMafia Goon
2Mafia RoleblockerTown CopTown Doctor
3Town 1-shot
Bulletproof
Mafia GoonTown Tracker

The setup is determined by randomly selecting one row or one column from the above table, then filling in the remaining 6 roles with Vanilla Townies and Mafia Goons as necessary to create a 7-town, 2-mafia setup.
For example, if Row 1 (Town Jailkeeper, Vanilla Townie, and Mafia Goon) was chosen, 5 Vanilla Townies and 1 Mafia Goon would be added, for a full setup of 1 Town Jailkeeper, 6 Vanilla Townies, and 2 Mafia Goons.

*The Mafia Roleblocker is allowed to
both
submit the nightkill
and
perform his Roleblocker action. In addition, the Roleblocker is stated to resolve before the Jailkeeper. (This only matters in the case where the Roleblocker and Jailkeeper target one another.)
*The Bulletproof Townie's bulletproof cannot be roleblocked, as it is a reflexive action.

Never staple your towel.
There's nothing that says that a fake can't beat the real thing.

You must not imagine that for beings like you and us there can be laughter. The low men laugh, and we envy them. But for us, the higher ones, there is no laughter, only an unending vigil, purely serious, stretching on into the night.

Hello all, I am your lovely IC. I am expected to help you learn to play the game, particularly in the context of this forum. Towards the pursuit of that goal, I will answer all your theory questions truthfully.

That's right,
I will not lie to you
about theory.

Now, you may be thinking "no fair, she's got more experience, clearly she will pwn newbs". That's only somewhat true. Some newbies have played many a game of Mafia elsewhere. Besides this, experience counts against me as well: you all are able to look up my past games and see how I've played in them. I can't because most of you don't have any. So it's a fairly even split.

Some helpful Wiki pages:
Quick Guide to Mafia
Quick Guide to Mafiascum
A Beginner's Guide to Being Awesome At Mafia

And some terms:
Glossary
Commonly Used Abbreviations

I also want to get this out now so as not to interrupt gameplay later:

HELPFUL TAG TIME

Code: Select all

[post]0[/post]

will look like

and link you to that post.

Code: Select all

Newbie 1735

will look like
Newbie 1735
And link you to that url (this one is this game).

Code: Select all
OH NO WHAT IS HAPPENING
will look like
OH NO WHAT IS HAPPENING

(highlight to read).

The code for a big spoiler is this:

Code: Select all
IT IS
which looks like
Spoiler: A SPOILER??
IT IS

Some mods are fine with spoilering of REALLY BIG WALLS O' TEXT. Some are not. If in doubt, always check with the Mod before you post.

Howdy! It's lovely to be here with you all! I'm excited!

Some things:

I can tend to be overly verbose and repeat some of what I've said before, but it is usually 1.) in light of new things that have developed since I last said them, and 2.) said in a different way trying to persuade others to see what I mean because: I think I've been misunderstood or I think it very strongly and it warrants being repeated.

This is my first game here, but I've played over 12 forum-mafia games before elsewhere and a few party versions (regular werewolf and one-night werewolf.)

I almost always roll vanilla town, I think of the 11 standard games I've played online (we've had a few mini-games and 1 all-mafia game and a resistance game.) I've been vanilla 8 times and town every time. It was aggravating for some games there to keep getting VT, but, I've gotten over it and embrace it now. I get lynched D1 very often as it too, and can't seem to shake it. I'd say I have a pretty good grip on the game.

Our games typically have 11-14 players, a few have had 15-16, but no more ever. Games of that size usually last a month or so, depending. I joined here because I wish to play some bigger games sometimes and mix the people I play with. The idea of 16-19 players with some different mechanics and role interactions than standard really appeals to me.

I've never hosted/modded a game, but I have an elaborate setup for a game that I will be running soon (in the next month?) as my first. I hope to maybe host the same game on this site someday after I get a bit more familiar here/make sure I want to stick around (though from everything I've looked at, I can't imagine not wanting to!) So, until then, I probably won't share my home site.

I like to roleplay, but don't always and don't always do it all of the time even if my first post of a game is 3 paragraphs of roleplay. Also, I try to roleplay in the context of the flavor/setup of the game and make myself genuinely feel to others that I'm the role that I rolled in the way I roleplay, but without giving anything away that I shouldn't.

I don't like lurking, and will eventually get tired of lurkers/people who post practically useless things and vote them if I don't have a strong feeling anywhere else.

I don't do RVS and will possibly use things that some excuse as "pure RVS" as a basis for an argument/viewpoint.

I don't think town should ever lie, except, ya know, those super, SUPER-rare times where it works (I've been in 2 games recently where town lying was a legit. move - 1 I agreed with those involved's decision and it won the game, the other I did not agree with the guy making the decision but understood it and it was not as harmful to town as it normally would be given the way the mechanics were.)

I like to no-lynch under varying circumstances, especially D1 (as town) - on the site I usually play this usually draws a good amount of ire.

I go mostly on "tone" reads and feels on attitude/behavior, and I think I'm a good judge of behaviors.

hmmm, probably other things I'm forgetting...I'll probably not go over that spiel in future games and just link to this post.

---

Has anyone here played with anyone here before? I have not.

Anyone never played mafia before?

oh, and, I typed all of this ^ before the game was live/unlocked

I don't see much to have gone on since the game has opened, except some standard RVS voting.

I also hope for a good game~!

Oh, and "he" is okay for me too, no need for "it."

@Drealmer
I like the enthusiasm but keep in mind that this is a game where condensing your thoughts and presenting them in a clear manner can be a good strategy.

As for your questions, I'm playing with Jae and I've played with goodmorning before, I've played a lot of mafia in all it's variants.

Why the RVS hate, is it an informed decision?

Hello all, I am your lovely newbie. I am expected to make you bash your head on the keyboard, particularly in the context of the results of my terrible intuition which will lead to innocent deaths. Towards the pursuit of that goal, I will answer all your questions with dubious, imprecise answers making me look incredibly guilty although i'm only a just a terrified, lost newcomer. (copyright goodmorning)

So yeah, i'm a newbie :) I'm familiar with the mechanics of the game and i've played quite a few of irl ones, but never on a forum and i'm no expert of the live one anyways. My native language isn't english so please excuse me if i have some trouble expressing myself.

And now, as i understand, random voting is kind of the tradition around here, so

I understand why RVS happens and don't "hate" it at all (I'd more say I hate lurking, but that's too strong of a word, "strongly dislike" is better for lurking), but I've found often times it is used by players to take actions that actually have an impact on the game/they intend it to have an impact but then they don't have to defend/explain it, and I find that a bit "cheap" (it's usually something done by mafia aligned players.)

Played mafia before enough to not be hopelessly lost in terms of strategy, but never on such a formal platform as this.

I actually really like no-lynching if possible but I don't believe it will be that relevant in this setup.

@dreal: I'll try to hit a couple points here:
-Try to use verboseness sparingly; it's useful sometimes but can make you very hard to read. It can also turn people off what you're saying.
-I much prefer VT to any other role but can understand why it would get old for you.
-This 9p game will probably last 2-3 months.
-Modding requirements here are super specific, so make sure you take a look at them before you /in to mod anything.
-Town should indeed usually not lie.
-No-lynching is usually not helpful, especially in games this size.
-If you read tone we should get along well.

@copper: I don't actually remember you at all?? When did we play?

@Ast:
1. yesssss
2. I couldn't tell about the English at all.
3.
but are you buddying me?????? omg

@dreal: Nobody really likes RVS, we just don't really have a better solution.

p-edit: @cilla: No other comments?

Can't find it in the chronology so it probably was (it also means it was before 2014), I believe we were all 3 town, we won the game but the two of us were mutually scum-reading each other for a decent chunk.

Yep, I saw the specifics about modding (and like that it is so), which is another reason I want to get a bunch of games under my belt first so I can get familiar with everything here before thinking about modding.

This game will last 2-3 months? Interesting! I thought I had checked a few newbie 9p games and they were 3-5 weeks, maybe I mis-looked. That's a bit longer than I anticipated, but no big deal.

In that case, let's move things along...

VOTE: staplertowel.

I'm sure that will be looked favorably upon!

No lynching vs Lynching

Spoiler: Theory
If we do not lynch D1 and then proceed as normal this is what happens when we mislynch the first time (something that is statistically likely):

D1: 9P => N1: 9P => D2: 8P => N2: 7P => D3: 6P MYLO so sleeping is the best strategy in most cases => N3: 6P => D4: 5P LYLO.

I.e. town had
1
lynch to try and remove scum from the game, while scum got
3
night kills to eliminate the townies they felt most threatened by and now town has to lynch correctly or it's over.

If we do lynch D1:
D1: 9P => N1 8P => D2: 7P => N2: 6P => D3: 5P LYLO

I.e. town had
2
lynches to try and remove scum (and in this case they failed both, which is less likely statistically than what was assumed in the first case), while scum got
2
night kills.

Despite assuming town played "worse" in the second case we still likely end up with a better lylo for town as they could at least remove the players that most players found suspicious leaving a harder task for scum to fool the remaining 3.

I'm ignoring the case where we get it right the first time as a) that is statistically unlikely and b) it makes it heavily favored for town in both cases so it's not something worth playing around (if there are math guys consider this a w.l.o.g. "proof")

Legend (if you need it):
D: day.
N: night.
P: players.
MYLO: if town lynches incorrectly they lose.
LYLO: if town does not lynch scum they lose.

Tl;dr: What you're doing by not lynching D1 in this setup is effectively shifting the kill over to scum and since they are always going to kill townies that's never a good idea.
