no idea what the cop thingy is, and nai weirded me out for the first few games I played where people threw the term around left right and center as well. It means "Not Alignment Indicative". They started making Tells that weren't tell-s for anything, just a common-enough personality quirk to name them, so they had to find some way to say that THESE tells weren't tells like THOSE tells were tells, and didn't help you to actually scumhunt by pointing them out, BUT made it look like you were trying by providing useless filler.
So yeah.

So NAI is the bastard lovechild of meta and null?
Like my indecipherable flows when the game makes me angry that happens regardless of alignment and just is a 'SpyreX' quirk needs its own name? That happens enough it had to be actually sat down, discussed by a council of drunken elders, and then THAT was decided?
Looks like my cash is safe. Caaause if thats whats going on I can just bet cop is gonna make me mad tooIn post 75, SpyreX wrote:You know what troll I'll bet hard cash that whatever the actual answer is makes far less sense then that- implosion

As far as I can tell it's just a hip new synonym for null.
I literally got called scum in the last game I was in because someone accused me of lying about not knowing what it meant.
Neapolitan is a vanilla cop. Apparently in normal games the formal distinction is which result they get for mafia goons and vanilla SKs.- SpyreX

A Neapolitan is a Vanilla Cop who gets positive results on vanilla townies only; Goons and unpowered Serial Killers get a negative result. (A normal Vanilla Cop sees Goons and unpowered Serial Killers as vanilla.) Ether deserves at least 90% of the credit and/or blame for this.
NAI is something that people have started using recently to mean "not alignment indicative", i.e. something that isn't a tell. Previously, people just used "null" for this, but nowadays "null" only seems to be used to describe players, rather than their actions, for some reason, and so a different phrase was needed to describe an action that doesn't have any bearing on the alignment of the player who makes it.scum· scam · seam · team · term · tern · torn ·town- SpyreX

So suuurrrr i can get behind that the original vanilla cop had some strange nuance but then a variant that truly is a vt checker gets a name that's even less accurate.
That's OK though this thread is nai

The design space is important and the name is a brilliant pun on at least four different levels and also it is my love letter to the English language shhhhhhhhhh.
The thing that's currently called a vanilla cop, though, the binary rolecop thing, that's a crappy role with a crappy name.As I move my vote

It turns out that 51% of the site assumed vanilla cops were the crappy rolecop nerf, and 49% assumed it was the version that actually does something, and nobody realized the disconnect until it was too late.
The name neapolitan is better than vanilla cop, though, on top of not coming with all of that ambiguity. As I move my vote

I think it only hurts because of the disconnect when i see it. I thought it was some kind of weird flavor cop.
I mean vig, cop, watcher, tracker those are easy to guess based on the name. Even vanilla the watered down rolecop sure but neo- SpyreX

I don't really think they are that easy? You understand it because you've been in this culture so long that you even have an abbreviation for "vigilante." No one who isn't already a mafia player could even tell you what "vig" is short for, let alone what it would do. Watchers aren't obvious, either, they do different things on different mafia sites. On IRC they're a binary tracker. (Or they were. I don't know if things have changed since 2009.)
But okay, here's why it's a good name that makes perfect sense:
-It's a flavor of ice cream, like the role it's attuned to.
-Specifically, it's a flavor of ice cream that separates vanilla from other flavors.
-It's also person from a city in Italy. Obviously Italy ties into our mafia roots, not that I'm a racist or anything.
-You know that crappy old joke "There are no vanilla townies in this game"/"..."/"You are a CHOCOLATE TOWNIE"? Weeeeeeeeeell you can do this with neapolitans too. If the game completely replaces all vanilla townies with neapolitans, then they'll have no power and be functionally vanilla, they just get a different ice cream flavor. As I move my vote

With that said in five years we'll probably be calling them neapos or something silly like that. And by then it'll sound totally normal to us. But here and now, I'm going to apologize in advance for that.

Watcher may have different nuance, but it should literally be some variant of one who watches.
Vigilante sure is a bit harder than an -er roler but contextually sure.
Maybe its just that vanilla has nothing to do with the ice cream or really even flavor it just caught on as the nicer version of 'plain'.
But i know I'm the counter culture in this war and that's OK- SpyreX

I'm pretty sure that "vanilla" in the context of "vanilla townie" caught on precisely because of the ice cream flavour. Vanilla isn't actually particularly plain in most contexts, but it's one of the plainest icecream flavours available (and plain icecream is often incorrectly described as vanilla).scum· scam · seam · team · term · tern · torn ·townCopyright © MafiaScum.
