The interaction is off for two scum. Even when they were buddying, it doesn't feel like it's two scum trying to town theater. Also, distancing usually comes first before buddying but it happened the other way around. Scum probably has day chat (OP would not say anything about it otherwise) so interaction would have probably be more refined and nuanced.

I'm not good at setup speculation, but the inclusion of "mafia encryptor" phrase is too specific to not have day chat. there's a possibility of a red herring but occam's razor.
