Town mailman is a role that depends on the strength of its user. It isn't useless though even without further role mechanics. Consider, for instance, that you can send someone breads on the night you die.

it seems to me like a lot of closed setups have at least one role that on some level is "the mods messing with players who try to setup spec"

I thought 54 was +town for Dwlee. Eagerly and visibly flagging yourself walking right back into the same pitfall is not the most obvious scumplay to see.

Possible. It seems like a mod trap either way really. If it's not an intentional wild goose chase or red herring, then it's punishing scum for standard play, right? I guess that's why I find myself searching for a third explanation.

if Prism is town, it would be punishing town in a 9P for a very logical thing to happen on Day 1

Correct, and this could be a built-in "feature" or could be amplified by some degree of Informed. There might in fact not be a second ascetic at all.
