I've been toying with the idea of setting up a
Nethack
Mafia - I've seen a number of people making nethack related jokes, so I wonder how popular it would be.

Basic Ideas (setup is nowhere near ready and I can't mod it yet)
- Almost no "intrinsic" powers (either town or scum)
- Powers come from items, which can be taken/given away (everyone is a potential inventor).
- Items can be used on self/other player/another item - sometimes for different results
- You don't know what an item does, unless you have an "identify" item (although what a Wand of Death does should be pretty obvious).
- Ability to loot corpses/Rooms.
- TDTTOE
- 12 or 18 players
- Possibly using the new fangled Deep South mechanic

Anyone interested in the theme/mechanics? Anyone interested in building up this game with me (Nethack familiarity required).

I think I'll gauge interest for a Soap Opera Mafia. I'm american, so it'll probably be One Life To Live or General Hospital.

I'm surprised you aren't trying to do a reality show mafia game of your own at this point. :D

Sounds interesting. I'd play.

Yes.

Absolutely. :)

Yes, yes and yes. Loved the book.

When I have enough mod experience I'm thinking of doing a large theme game based on cartoons from 1990's

I would absolutely be keen to play all of those too. Especially HHGG and Discworld.

I'm pretty new here but once I get going on the modding front I hope to run a Mr Man theme mafia at some point, and also another Discworld one (but pretty different to Korts's, I think; in mine the players would be discworld gods, competing for belief).

Poet Showdown Mafia

Mountainous, but every player has a PR: everyone is given a poetic form in which they must post, i.e. shakespearian sonnet, petrarcan sonnet, villanelle, acrostic, etc.

Hi, this is my first post on this forum  . I don't know if this is the right place to post this so if it isn't I apologise in advance .

I want to host a mafia at a forum where a lot of mafia is played (not here, don't worry :P) but I have only ever hosted two mafias before and they were simple Mafia/Townie affairs with newbie players and no theme. The game I would like to host will be more complicated, have a theme, be larger and will have more experienced players in it. So what I would like to ask is if any experienced moderators here would mind helping me a little with the game setup? I would get help from some experienced moderators I know but they want to play so obviously I can't tell them all of the roles etc.

I already have a draft copy of the setup (15 players currently). I would appreciate ideas for roles and characters but what I mainly need help with is
balance
.

If anyone would be kind enough to give me some advice, please PM me or add me on Windows Live Messenger (my contact address is in my profile) so I can send you my current ideas. Thanks! :)

Dragon! :D

I'd look at it, but if it's at HG (which I think it is), then I'm probably going to want to play. :P

My advice would be to go ahead and host it, as you might have noticed Wanderer's Dragonlance mafia is his first time hosting, and I'm doing the Martian Mafia game for my first time hosting, both of which aren't "Mafia/Townie affairs with newbie players and no theme"

And that is the problem :D.

I would just host it as I'm not exactly inexperienced at mafia but I'd prefer it to be as good as possible as it's my first HG host. Also, the waiting lists are ridiculously long...I doubt I'll get to host until like Christmas so I have lots of time :(. I could host it at AoMH since there's no waiting list there virtually but then people from AoMH will sign up and not play or play properly and I don't want that. :/

HG's skill level is horribly low. They don't read the fucking text. Even good setups are useless when you have such awful players.

Not true. AoMH's skill level is horribly low. Other heavens with much less activity in their community forums are much better because there aren't random passers-by joining the game and then not really playing. I am in one currently and signed up for about 3 elsewhere in HG, they are good.

Let's see...TWH...no, there's at least 4 noobs there. OD...same....SC2H...50 inactives... BFMEH...no....

When there are constantly 3 or 4 incompetent players the games are always ruined because you can't get away by lynching all of them. This goes for both big and small heavens as it seems like the incompetent ratio is the same for forum populations of all sizes.

RoLH had an AITP game in which I replace modded and it was really screwed up cause of inactivity. And it was only a 7 player game...

I do not find more than one or two incompetent players in a 15-20 player mafia often. Inactivity is a problem though, I agree there. I haven't found anywhere else with better mafias though so bleh.

ORLY?

I define incompetent as either 1) inexperienced 2) don't think, or 3) can't play (inactive).

It's not about how many good players there are, but rather how many bad players. Good players will go with the mod's expectations and properly use their roles. Bad players wreck the game because they impact it in ways that are not possible/practical to foresee.

Not to mention most HG players seem to follow the school of thought that states "No Lynch is better than Possible Mislynch."

The community does not make much progress in improving their game either, because nooby game mods make imbalanced/swingy games which do not teach players much. Most of the time setup-guessing followed by night action-directing is more of a valid strategy for town than scum-hunting. If you take a look at OD's Iraq mafia you'll see that town is lead on entirely by cops and interpreting what the cops say, rather than looking at what the players had written which may be scumtells.

They're playing some sort of elaborate RP, not mafia.

Well maybe you find hosting mafias a chore if you're just criticizing everyone's play but I would only do it for fun. HG's mafias are usually heavily themed and have a lot of power roles in them but so what? I would find "4 townies, 1 cop, 2 mafia" boring after a while. I have no idea why you decided to host your newbie mafia at AoMH anyway, another heaven would have been better. At least then the players would probably appreciate the simpler game and try to use it to improve - none of the AoMH-only crowd really cares or takes it seriously enough to improve. :/

I could have just hosted a game and had it "imbalanced" or "nooby" but instead I came here looking for advice. Sue me.

Obviously I'm not talking about you. I was pointing out the reason for HG's lack of mafia playing ability in general.

Me introducing standard games in AoMH was an attempt to increase skill level of the community. Not sure if it achieved anything though, as the noobs are still playing like "oh well too bad I hammered a townie but I'm noob so forgive me". It is hell when you have to play with players like that in a game.

I was thinking about
Femme Fatale Mafia
. Do you think every player (except for scum) having (along with other powers) a one-shot vig kill is a bit much? :D

Counter-Strike Mafia

You are the counterterrorists
, along with X. You're like a mason kinda, but you have a vig kill each night. You're town aligned though.

You are the terrorists
. You and X and absolutely hate the little town of de_inferno, and you're out to destroy it. How, you may ask? A bomb, that's what.
The bomb, doesn't exactly know it's a bomb, so you need that bomb to get to the endgame, in which you blow it up. If the bomb is lynched, YOU FAILED, and must eliminate townies by regular means (ie: lynching). The bomb can only be set off if somebody's there to set it off, in other means, if there's no terrorist to set it off, it's not going off. You have no NK.

8 other townies, one of which is the bomb.

I am currently developing Sondheim mafia, a truly gargantuan task that will hopefully be my magnum opus before I leave the site.
