But at the time he defends them, he doesn't know their alignment. He's ordering people to back off, just based on the confidence of his own read.
And, for that matter, until he himself is dead, as an observer, I can't know his motivation for defending them.
How the fuck is it pro-town to say, "No, this guy is town, stop questioning him?"

Pro-town? Not exactly.
But his reads were fairly well on the money. Doesn't matter if they were "confirmed" or not, half of this game is getting people to agree with your reads.
You can't just say someone is bad when they properly read people.
It is on you - not him - to discern your own read of a person then evaluate their reads based off of that.

Since he reads Wrath as town, it does. He forces the wagons to go other places than the town reads he has. He chases down his scum-reads rather than settling for a lynch he doesn't believe in.
