"Avatar" clearly means the film "The Little Mermaid" as its starring character is depicted in the game moderator's avatar. I think Annadog40 would probably like that film, because she's a Frozen enthusiast. Probably a little less than Frozen, because all the H20 is in liquid form instead.

Oh okay, this is getting subjective LOL.

Honestly, I really liked the animation quality in the movie, and it is a blockbuster. I'd say this should be around like a little more to the right side?

so i think that if you wanted to signal
very strongly
either "good movie" or "bad movie" there would be other options that made a lot more sense than avatar

for that reason i think that roughly 25% from either extreme can probably be discarded? that is, i don't think the truth lies anywhere from 0-25 or from 75-100. actually, to go even further, i think that
if
the spot we're aiming for (which henceforth i'm just going to call "the target") was meant to be closer to "bad movie" than "good movie" in any significant manner, avatar would also not be the movie you would choose. i'm trying to think about this as detached from my own opinions on the movie, and more about how it makes sense as a choice.

so i think that it's probably either around the middle or closer to 0, or roughly from 25 to, say, 55.

if i were to go with my own thoughts on the movie, i would say that it's probably closer to the middle than it is to 0. avatar was pretty huge when it released, very technically impressive and was the highest grossing movie ever for a while i think, but i don't feel like it's particularly beloved? like, i would probably be pretty surprised to hear someone say that it's their favorite movie.

i think i might guess somewhere in the range of 40 to 50. what do you guys think?

Oh wait good is on the left. Alright.

Yeah, my guess would be something like around 30.

I feel like I remember Avatar being pretty well-liked when it came out but I'll defer to nsg on this on that it's not <25. I think 30 is pretty reasonable? If I were going for a mediocre movie I probably wouldn't pick something that was so impressive in its special effects.

what movie would you pick if you were going for "mediocre"? i know that you said you don't see a lot of movies and this might just be me projecting my own opinion, but i feel like avatar would be a fairly decent choice if i wanted to signal "mediocre".

i think 30 is too low. at the very least i think it would be 35.

35 would still be a reasonable number though. I'd want to go with 33-36.

I feel like this is probably better than mediocre? I guess I'd be ok with 35 though.

Hi guys, just wanted to post some clarifications/rule updates that I made to the OP:
  • 0 always represents the left end of the spectrum and the left word on the card. 100 always represents the right end of the spectrum and the right word on the card.
  • Each of the point-scoring ranges have a width of 5.

so, are we all good with guessing 35, then?

Alright, now that Team IMAGINATION has locked in their guess, it’s time for Team Headgear Psychics to guess whether they think the true target is more to the left (0/Good movie) or more to the right (100/Bad movie) than 35! Team Headgear Psychics has (expired on 2020-04-22 21:18:29) to guess.

What if Ariel meant avatar the last airbender though. Bet you guys didn't think of that.

My first instinct would be to guess lower (better).

9,450 isn't one of the available ratings, so the cluegiver cannot have meant to indicate Avatar the Last Airbender

I hope you meant -9450 there, popsofctown. I don't think a 1v1 right now is very healthy for the gamestate

Also I agree we should go lower. Isn’t Avatar generally accepted as A Good Movie (tm)? My guess would’ve been 25ish

There are lots of people that hate Avatar. There's lots of things you can hate:
1.) Poor character development, I don't think it's really due to poor filmmaking as much as the long plot and worldbuilding consuming finite resources
2.) Entire movie is delivering an extremely on-the-nose metaphor that's kind of so on-the-nose that it's tacky. I like sure hope the grumpy guy who gave me a C- on a script for having my character watch a snail keel over and die on the sidewalk in between scenes did not buy a second ticket for a second showing of the movie where damage to some magic tree that is the lifeforce of the planet is a metaphor for wealthy nations generally doing environmentally costly things to our planet, if he takes a consistent attitude about subtlety
3.) Much of the movie's metaphor is a rather extreme form of imperialism/colonialism that is going to be less relatable to a US/UK audience due to not happening in that intensity lately and lol we're the perps when it is. But part of the movie being a massive financial success similar to transformers is that that's not the only audience, and films with culturally agnostic content like CGI characters and good action scenes do great worldwide from the getgo. I bet it resonated better in other places where that kind of thing has happened more recently.
4.) Individually some people really have a problem with nonhuman anthropomorphic characters in their films, especially when they need to be empathy vessels.

I also want to go lower, it's just kind of safer, but it risks a whiff. The only thing I know about annadog is she had a frozen avatar for a while, and Frozen has lifelike characters, a novel plot that busts clichés, and equally good storytelling, Avatar is a story that maybe shouldn't be told in the first place that was told very well. So I feel like it's too diagonal of a comparison to try to figure something out.

true story, I saw the alien and the human making googoo eyes at eachother, then fell asleep for a nap in the movie theater for like ten minutes, and when I woke up they were holding hands with eachother and one of them said "We are mated before Aewa". And I thought, well, that escalated quickly.
