Boils down to two things:

1) How much he threw around the "I'm a newb I'm so lost" card

2) How easily he was bullied on to/off of wagons. Newb scum are often yes-men because they don't want to rub people the wrong way/stick out too much. My play in Xenoblade and NY165 had a lot of this (although not nearly as overt as key's here).

I watched Samurai Jack as a kid. It also had oil or what-not instead of blood, little dialogue, mostly action or heartwarming scenes, etc. so it was definitely a kid's show.
