the fact is yes, mafia manipulate the looking part. and we are already looking worse than the 4 people in heaven -- that is why we are in hell. we LOOK worse, even if we are town (and people think both you and me are town, generally) we need to look townier, and do something that is towny enough to overcome 4 people who look townier than us. this is why it's important that... even if i like, think you're town, what does that matter if i die and no one in heaven believes you despite you knowing you're town and me knowing you're town?
