That said, you will be rekt the instant you don't have clone up and he goes in because ryze has no cooldowns. Also DN, if you want, you can 1v1 me and try it.

Well as a very experienced player who has played ryze once, you need something with range. Even if you're pretty strong melee-wise, his w can bind you and that allows him to get away.

Playing vs Ryze as a melee who is "counterpicked" means you really have 2 choices: you give up the early game entirely and try not to let him freeze the lane in an unfavorable position for you (read: anywhere not right next to your turret) and you try to do him at 6, or you say fuck it, and try to do him at 2/3 right when you rush the level and have a split-second advantage of an extra skill.
Ryze loses super hard to just about every ap mid, he's a bullshit niche toplaner who shows up to laugh at you when you fp a melee. I say gank him til he quits. I really kinda hate ryze players which is awkward because I love playing ad mid. I guess I just don't like anything that only works when you pick it second.

Ryze is one of my favorite champs because I'm terrible at solo lanes and he makes me less terrible

why do you want to "main" a role?
you have a dedicated 5 men team?
If I 'main' a role, I feel more confident about playing the role.
Which in turn makes my teammates (be it normals, ranked, or 5s) more comfortable about me playing.
And overall chance of victory goes up.

Really doesn't matter who you pick against ryze. He's a squishy shortranged mage with initially no damage. He builds MANA. That means he doesn't actually have painful autos, and the first 1000 gold will actually go into a stat that just makes his q's a little more painful, but nothing else. His root has been nerfed ages ago, and actually doesn't stop anything that wants to run at him. Just take it, run on. He literally gets bullied by anything but the biggest losers champwise top. Most of them go 9-0-21 (iirc), start blue crystal of all things, which means there's a 450 HP no combat stats smurf coming into your lane lv1. He has no regen, nothing. He simply loses every trade to pretty much any toplaner imaginable. All it takes is getting said trades. As against any ranged character, use the bushes.
And then, suppose you don't feel like killing him, he can't push. Yes, with his ult he has some waveclear, but when he gets to a tower... tough luck. You need AP or AD to hurt towers more, and he builds neither. So if you were sensible and didn't pick a single target melee assassin (lee, panth, you name it) and actually a sensible top: waveclear, push him back, go do things with your friends, your teammates. You are always going to be more mobile on the map than a ryze can be. He can't threaten your turret, you can threaten his. He doesn't have waveclear, you tend to do, and all bruisers spike a lot earlier than a ryze, so you can duel him.
It's after you've failed to get an advantage in the early, and the midgame, that you start to have an issue. Because Ryze is eating teams suddenly.

Myko... I want to believe what you are saying but I see too many Ryzes become complete Gods late game and I don't understand why nothing was done to stop them early. I am assuming that people dont know how to play against a ryze or are picking champs that don't play well against him.
Anyways, I have been playing support a lot lately and I become pretty good at peeling. Shoot with Ali, I can keep everyone off my ADC a whole teamfight. I still don't win very many games though and I think its because as a support, I still rely on my other team members to be good enough to win. If I get an ADC who just can't CS then my zoning their ADC doesn't mean anything. If I get a jungle who has no control over dragon or doesn't gank, then my lane gets pushed hard by the other jungle. There are so many things that are screwing up my games when I support and I hardly have any control over it.
I am almost to the point of just trolling every game and picking a carry role regardless of my call order. I am tired of being a lane that can't carry.

That, or the game takes too long. If your average game length is 50 minutes, odds are that the ryze gets online at some point.

I find lee into ryze to not be that hard of a lane. Land q, go in, land e, land more q, go 5-0.

That's part of why I prefer playing ADC because it feels like if I play 10 games as support I can CS better than 7-8 of the 10 ADs I play with.
(can't speak for jungling because I'm kinda scared to death of being that role, though...
)

Also, speaking of Ryze vs. w/e, is Mundo a skill matchup, or is my view of that colored by the fact that I've really only watched the LCS and worlds for Ryze vs. Mundo matchups and not seen it play out personally?

Ryze vs. Mundo depends on how good Ryze bullies Mundo pre-6.

by BROseidon
No, it depends on how much jungler help Ryze gets.
Ryze doesn't have enough damage early to bully through Mundo's sustain.

I'd say Ryze vs Mundo is a "what's happening on the rest of the map" matchup. They both want to scale, neither has a lot of kill pressure on the other. As ani alluded to, ryze loses his edge after Six. But honestly, it's not going to be a bloodbath.

Seems like it's poke and cs early game, get your manamune as fast as possible, get LW and BC and and probably BT next, and use your poke to get people off objectives and turrets.
I mean, I don't play Jayce (and honestly hate him as a champion like I hated pre-rework Nidalee), but Jayce is probably
the
AD poke champion to use, and maybe the poke champ period since Nidalee stopped being the top AP poke champ.
