What I said is correct. I have an ability that affects my other abilities (and itself, presumably), but I don't have any other abilities. The ability does nothing by itself except modify abilities.

My speculation is that there are ability-granting or ability-detecting mechanics at work in this setup.

as for the sucking up, I feel that it's a scum-tell when it's the only thing that the person does. She can like Fery's Iso, I like Fery's Iso it's helpful but if the sole Purpose is to butter someone up and get them onto your good side then they are probably likely scum. It's for that exact same reason WK'ing is a scum-tell, it serves as a way to get the person under good light. Make them look really good.

My liking Selkies's iso was more to do with it being a ray of light in what I'm perceiving as a very dark cave of mafia playing. And it's far from the only thing I do. Claiming that praising another player's opinion is scummy is an example of things in that dark cave of mafia playing.
