Aww no T_T sorry guys...if I would have just voted for Om...
Well this certainly was interesting. I'm glad I got to play this game-I feel like I learned a lot and it was a lot of fun too. When I first saw this, I was like "Mafia online? That sounds like it would drag on forever. Boring." And I guess it did but this is actually much more fun than mafia in person. :D

I have to ask though, how come everyone believed my RC? Was it just believable or is there a distinct difference if a mafia were to RC as doctor?

nobody else was left. Everybody else claimed not doctor and the chances of scum no killing n1 are distinctly small.

Ah. Is there something in particular I could've/should've done differently as a doctor, like night actions?

not really. You breadcrumbed somewhat well that you had protected xeg. All in all, good job.

oh, and I just saw you /in for another newby. You'd be more then ready for a "real" game.

My advice to you Emp is speak up. You were pretty quiet this game. That being said, as a PR it is a good idea to not draw too much attention to yourself so if that's what you were going for then well done.

You think so? Well maybe next time then. (I dunno I'm still a little nervous) ^^;

@CF-I wasn't really sure how to play it. I was trying to stay under the radar but it did make me look like I was lurking. I guess I should try and be less conspicuous then.

unless you are really terrible (and lets not name names, but
that guy
), a couple of days in a newbie game teach you everything it can teach you, really. Newbies are there to give you a bit of a feel for the game, but can't really teach you that much more. That's what happens soon enough in mini normals, mini themes or micros. You get to know people and that helps with getting better. It also helps just to get more real games under your belt, the more you play, the better you get.

And don't be nervous. You'd fit right in with the rest here.

Other than that, probably just more frequent vote counts. I wasn't sure if you did one once a day or not, but it felt like it was a long time in between vote counts.
I didn't do flavor because I thought it'd be smarter to avoid that in my first newbie; not to mention the reaction of most of the players in my last modded game was "newbies will get confused". I agree more or less. I plan on adding more flavor to games I mod in the future, but for these early ones - particularly newbies - I'm going to try and keep things simple. I wish I had done some Pokemon flavor, though... Just 'cause Pokemon and all.

I just tried to do one once every page. Anything more than that is repetitive. I did miss a few pages, though. :oops:

Thanks for the feedback! :]

Smashbard wrote:Also, don't have so many damned experienced players taking up newbie slots in a newbie game. lol. I'm kidding but I mean sheesh. Guys like Myko, Nacho, Trollie & Riot should all be scumhunting in the big league games. Not causing newbs like myself to sweat bullets. lol.
That was exactly my thought process, but meh. A replacement is a replacement is a replacement. It would have been nice to have more newbies so they could learn the ropes and such, but the more experienced players always make games exciting, so.

Smashbard wrote:I think I'm just going to active lurk my next few games regardless of my alignment to shake up my meta a little bit.

Please don't do this. Activity is literally the best thing you can do regardless of alignment. Don't blame activity for the reasoning people thought you were scum; blame the content. Go back and look at why people called you out. No one called you out for being too active. There were things you said or did that didn't look townish. Learn from those mistakes and fix them. You can even take this knowledge and apply it to your town meta, too. The best way to be scum is to just forget you're scum. Don't look at things as, "I shouldn't say that as scum." Look at it as, "I shouldn't say that."

Newbies are totally fun and still teach me things! :igmeou: There's nothing wrong with continuing to play them.

If you all wait a bit (could be a day... Or five), I'll write up things to improve on or keep doing or etc. Unless Nacho wanted to do that?

Only problem is once you get invested in trying out the other games around the site, people expect you to know how to scumhunt and the whole "He's new" excuse doesn't mean a whole lot anymore because you were expected to cut your teeth and become a good player through the newbie games you were in.

That's pretty much the only reason I signed up for another newbie game after trying a Mini Theme, Mini Normal and Large Normal. Because I realized I still sucked horribly at catching scum and was paying for it dearly from players who expected better from me.

Players like myself are not ready for the big league games, so playing extra newbie games is perfectly fine until we "get" it.

It sounds sort of... Idk harsh? egotistical maybe? but one of the best pieces of advice I can give new players is if there are 3-4 players in a game that are all yelling at you about the same thing, they're probably right and you should listen. Now you have to use common sense of course, cause it's mafia and people lie and yada yada, but generally if you're doing something as a newbie and several veterans all tell you that's stupid because <x, y, z> then they might just know what they're talking about and you should just take their advice. If you don't fully understand where they're coming from then you could ask after the game or maybe look for a different thread onsite that explains it, but if you turn it into a big argument during the game you hurt the town and yourself by 1) causing a big distraction from real scum hunting, 2) (possibly) making yourself look scummy by supporting sub-optimal play and 3) making yourself look foolish by being hard headed instead of accepting that there may be practices around here that happen for a reason which you aren't fully aware of yet.

Now given, this is totally noob advice to be used by noobs when clearly there are multiple people who are telling you you're wrong. Once you've been here a while and you feel like bucking the system, you're more than welcome to stick by an action and challenge peoples' opinions on whether or not it's a good play. The "best playstyle" around here is always up for debate and constantly changing, so don't feel like you have an exact set of rules you have to follow in games. Just be aware that many games have been played here before you, and in that time we've figured a couple things out.

You are the exception.

The problem is that newbies don't really help you to learn how to scumhunt, or I'd agree with you.

The problem with newbie games is that you face newbies. A different set of tells works on them for the simple reason that they haven't played a game before. They'll always make the same mistakes, you can catch them in ways which aren't possible in a normal game. And lets not pretend that the players in them are so great. They just play in a slightly different way.

Emp showed that she can play with nacho, me, CF, trollie, skrew without problems. She knows how things go now. A small "real" game is the next logical step for everybody who managed to play a couple of days in a newbie, to get experience. Just avoid the larges the first time. They are asking a bit more concentration.

Bolded is key. Newbies coming here are always the same, newbie games hence don't change very much. Seven of the nine people are on average coming in with the same habits and knowledge from previous games (none). That means some tells work very well against them while learning them won't help you for real games. And the other way around. Some tells that work in real games can't be applied very well in newbies, dyr being a good example here.

@Em,
What everyone else said, I was not expecting anyone else aside from Nacho or CF to actually protect Xeg if they had protective roles. You've good insight on the game and could go far if you play with the right lot.

@Trollie:
Claiming Doc was my last resort if things went away from Dry since Em had plenty of hints in her ISO that she was PR and I had her down as kill target no matter what after CF for that very reason. CCing her wouldn't have played well for me considering Myko was still around, best option was to stick with the other plan and appear disinterested and weak town or possible weak scum who wouldn't have given as much as satisfaction as lynching fighting scum does. Also, Dry thing was going well as long as I made sure Smash was off the top lynch option for that day. All thanks to Nacho's post-lynch reads I had him gave intentionally and some self destructive anti-town play from Dry himself.

-I can't compare with any other game mods (obvi) but I felt you did a good job. You were consistant with vote count posting and helpful but firm. You were so professional though, I had no idea this was your first noob game. Discriptions would be cool in the killings and whatnot, I agree.

@Om
-Wow. Just wow. If there weren't so many experienced players, I'm not sure anyone would have suspected you. Nicely played. Maybe it's a bit odd to ask since we're both beginners, so I'll ask Smash, too. How do you play as mafia without drawing enough attention to yourself to get lynched? I know I'd have been in trouble if I was mafia I wouldn't know what lies to tell ^^;

I try to scumhunt the same way I scumhunt as town. Makes it really hard for people to make a meta case against me because well, I act the same in every game.

Unfortunately this tactic always makes me seem scummy regardless of alignment. And I still haven't figured out what I'm saying or how I say it that makes it so scummy in the first place.

I seem to do pretty well at talking myself out of a corner in clinch situations. I get aggressive in defending myself and people seem to like that and think it's town that I fight back cases against me point for point. Because unless someone's got a guilty investigation on you or something it's not too hard to discredit almost any logic whatsoever because at the end of the day, town can't be 100% sure that they are spot on without physical evidence of your guilt.

Unless your in games like this one where there was no case against me, just that everything I said was scummy. Which makes it pretty easy to fight back against because you can normally force someone into a debate by demanding a case be presented otherwise their suspicions mean nothing to you. Which people tend to also think is town.

I mean, if a guy can't even list why they think you are scummy in proper words, how do they expect the rest of the town to follow in your lynch?

It's not really an issue of knowing how to lie or even lying itself. You can be scum all game and never say a single lie, except for the obvious one that someone always asks by going "Are you scum?". Then you have to. But you don't really need to think hard about how to lie. Just play the game like you normally would as town with the added knowledge that you know who your scumpartner is, so you don't want to lynch them generally. Otherwise you can "scumhunt" everyone else to make believable mislynches.

I'm not really a beginner, I've played on other sites in different formats and 2-3 of this format a year back. How to play as scum is not something anyone can describe, but I think Tracey did it well by saying something along the line.. ''forget that you're scum and play''.
