This is the truth! My first game outside of newbies (and I had had about five newbies under my belt by that time, mind you), I made a mistake in understanding the setup (well, the February crash, really) and asked a question about it - one that I later corrected - and everyone spent day one interrogating and attacking me. Then I was the night kill. So, I agree that the harder games show little mercy for the newer players, but I also agree with Myko that newbies are a very different environment, and the only way you can learn how to↑ Smashbard wrote:Only problem is once you get invested in trying out the other games around the site, people expect you to know how to scumhunt and the whole "He's new" excuse doesn't mean a whole lot anymore because you were expected to cut your teeth and become a good player through the newbie games you were in.
That's pretty much the only reason I signed up for another newbie game after trying a Mini Theme, Mini Normal and Large Normal. Because I realized I still sucked horribly at catching scum and was paying for it dearly from players who expected better from me.
Players like myself are not ready for the big league games, so playing extra newbie games is perfectly fine until we "get" it.
really
scumhunt effectively is by changing your environment every now and again.^This guy is wise.↑ CF Riot wrote:It sounds sort of... Idk harsh? egotistical maybe? but one of the best pieces of advice I can give new players is if there are 3-4 players in a game that are all yelling at you about the same thing, they're probably right and you should listen. Now you have to use common sense of course, cause it's mafia and people lie and yada yada, but generally if you're doing something as a newbie and several veterans all tell you that's stupid because <x, y, z> then they might just know what they're talking about and you should just take their advice. If you don't fully understand where they're coming from then you could ask after the game or maybe look for a different thread onsite that explains it, but if you turn it into a big argument during the game you hurt the town and yourself by 1) causing a big distraction from real scum hunting, 2) (possibly) making yourself look scummy by supporting sub-optimal play and 3) making yourself look foolish by being hard headed instead of accepting that there may be practices around here that happen for a reason which you aren't fully aware of yet.
Now given, this is totally noob advice to be used by noobs when clearly there are multiple people who are telling you you're wrong. Once you've been here a while and you feel like bucking the system, you're more than welcome to stick by an action and challenge peoples' opinions on whether or not it's a good play. The "best playstyle" around here is always up for debate and constantly changing, so don't feel like you have an exact set of rules you have to follow in games. Just be aware that many games have been played here before you, and in that time we've figured a couple things out.
Thank you very much! And okay. Maybe I↑ em+p_dear wrote:@Tracy-I can't compare with any other game mods (obvi) but I felt you did a good job. You were consistant with vote count posting and helpful but firm. You were so professional though, I had no idea this was your first noob game. Discriptions would be cool in the killings and whatnot, I agree.
will
try throwing a bit of flavor into my next newbie. Just for a bit of variety.RAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGG-
Oh. Okay. Very good then. <3
Just a heads up, people tend to enjoy offensive play more than defensive. It looks less like you're hiding something, and more like you're fighting for "what you believe in". The offensive tied in with defensive is a particularly nice combination.↑ Smashbard wrote:I seem to do pretty well at talking myself out of a corner in clinch situations.I get aggressive in defending myself and people seem to like that and think it's town that I fight back cases against me point for point.Because unless someone's got a guilty investigation on you or something it's not too hard to discredit almost any logic whatsoever because at the end of the day, town can't be 100% sure that they are spot on without physical evidence of your guilt.
^More wisdom.↑ Smashbard wrote:It's not really an issue of knowing how to lie or even lying itself. You can be scum all game and never say a single lie, except for the obvious one that someone always asks by going "Are you scum?". Then you have to. But you don't really need to think hard about how to lie. Just play the game like you normally would as town with the added knowledge that you know who your scumpartner is, so you don't want to lynch them generally. Otherwise you can "scumhunt" everyone else to make believable mislynches.
