I'd be surprised if you could find three people who know it well enough to be considered 'well versed'. Though I could be wrong, it doesn't come up in conversations often.
Well, at least partial knowledge would be helpful. About the main characters and whatnot. Here, I don't know, but I could dig up people from other M:tG sites too, hm..

I give a list of stats and you allocate points to them, which will give you certain "class" or "class features".
Will be drawn from pretty much every RPG game I've ever played.

Don't know if this has been mentioned/done yet, but how about Sanatorium Mafia? XD The general idea:Stricken by the plague that is Life, many a tough cop and brilliant doctor now lay helpless in the Sanatorium, victims of their own overly-distressed minds. However, within the place that was meant to be their eventual salvation, trouble begins brewing within the most deeply convoluted individuals, who vow to take as many lives as they can in what they see to be no more than a prison.
Only with the help of a Psychologist can any of them be cured, whether for good or ill, though who knows when Life might strike again. Will the mentally ill patients be able to find their murderers before it's too late?
So some roles include: Life Incarnate, Psychologist, Schizophrenic, Insomniac, plusmanyother mentally ill roles (ex. /in! Would Un-cards be allowed?Would there be any interest for a Magic: The Gathering upick? You choose your card and you would get a unique ability based on the card. Players would have a certain number of votes required to lynch them based on their card's defence, a number of votes their vote counts for based on attack, and an ability reflected by any of their card's abilities. In an effort to redefine the meta, I came up with the idea of Reality Mafia. Basically, it's like a more realistic take on the mafia. Doctors can't prevent kills, cops are (usually) too dumb to figure anything out, the mafia aren't lynched but rather thrown into jail (from which they can escape) or maybe given the death penalty, etc etc. Some roles could include:
*Witness. They see the crimes in action. They could have a percentage chance of seeing who did the killing, and if they are seen - possibly getting killed themselves. Not sure how it could work, though. Could be by targeting or simply being in the right (or wrong) place at the right (or wrong) time.
*Accountant. Similar to day-vig, they could automatically throw a mafioso in jail for not paying their taxes. XD But if attempted on a non-mafioso, they'd probably get fired and become vanilla town.
*New Godfather. Everyone knows who they are, but can't do anything about it (until the goons are out of the way).
*Jail-breaker (goon). Spend the mafia's night action to break a fellow mafioso out of jail.
*Prison Guard. Kind of a Roleblocker for the Jail-breaker. Probably would be non-targeting, so as long as he's alive the Jail-breaker can't free his/her buddies, or would have a very low chance.
*Judge. Give someone the death penalty rather than putting them in jail. If a townie is given the death penalty, would probably get fired and become vanilla town.
*Corrupt Cop. Mafia-aligned cop (pretty useless, but would make for interesting claims imo).

I can't see how the mafia would leave someone injured but not dead, and protecting someone from a mafia kill just doesn't seem realistic. You're right about the new GF though. Hm, hidden but protected from the death penalty, maybe? The jury idea would make it harder, yes... and if some scum breaks out of jail, everyone knows they're mafia :/ ends up just like the new GF idea. Will have to think about that.... Maybe if the GF is known and is a NPC, and is the only one who can escape jail... what do you mean about the auto-lynch?Pretty good, though you could have percentage-Docs: They get a list of who was injured overnight, and can try to save any one person. Works better if the mafia can have multiple kills/night...
The only role I don't like at all is New Godfather. If everyone knows who they are, then there's nothing they can say that will be trusted, therefore they have no reason to post in the game. Better to make this an NPC that causes Town to have to spend one auto-lynch at the end, after all Goons are dead...
Juries instead of Lynch Mobs could be interesting as well, but that makes Town's job MUCH harder...
That would be interesting, though if they side with town it'd be like any other cop role, and I was trying to avoid that here. The Witness idea comes close, but now that I think about it, every townie could be a potential witness, hmm....What if the corrupt cop could win with town or scum, but had to choose D2 or N2?

You have a point. Hm, what if it were something like this:
You have 2 options each night. Option 1: Weak ability. Option 2: Strong ability, with only a chance of succeeding.
Take a risk, or no?
Also, I've a new idea for the Witness matter, to keep it somewhat realistic:
All players are on a grid. If, for example, mafia wants to kill somebody, they would have to cross certain squares to get to their target, kill them, and go back. All along that way, there is a chance someone could have seen/heard something. In this game, one person will each time, and the mafia will take the quickest route automatically. Who gets it is random, though it must be a townie and must be adjacent to the crime or route (if there aren't any, nobody hears/sees anything). Also, what type of information they'll get is random, and usually weak. This way, the info is more or less a pure bonus, though not a great one, so there's not much swingyness.
So going by who dies and who gets the clues, you can get an idea of where the mafia are. The clues themselves won't be 100%, but you can still use that info to narrow down who's mafia.
Or am I just better off applying the K.I.S.S. method? Seems ok to me, but I thought of it, so...
