He was wrong. As he walked up his driveway, a female-sounding voice spoke.
"Nice evening, isn't it?" the voice said.
"Yeah," StrangerCoug agreed. "Really pleasant, too."
"Not anymore, it isn't."
"What the hell?"
StrangerCoug's first instinct other than to say that was to make a 180° turn. His mailbox, which was just fine 15 seconds ago, was now completely engulfed in flames. He looked for something he could use to put out the fire before it endangered the rest of his community.
"I wish you didn't do that," he grumbled.
Somehow, a bucket filled with a clear liquid appeared in front of his feet. He picked it up, ran toward the mailbox, and dumped the contents on it. But instead of put out the fire, it made it flare up. The clear liquid was gasoline, not water like he thought it was. StrangerCoug just got second-degree burns to his face.
"You bastard!" StrangerCoug called out.
"Sucks to be you," the voice responded, laughing maniacally.
He reached down in his pocket to get his cell phone. He flipped it open and found that it didn't work. All the nearby buildings disappeared, too, leaving just him and the burning mailbox.
"One last thing, desert cat," the voice said. "Your friends are here, but they're not here to play. They're here to kill each other. Eventually, they'll be coming to kill you."
"They are
"Plead with them, then. After all, you know this place better than them. Good luck—you'll need it to live."
The voice laughed maniacally again before fading away.
The setting suddenly changed. It seemed like the nightmare was over, but it was in fact nested in another nightmare. He turned off his alarm clock, which he failed to notice made a different noise than it did in real life, and opened his bedroom door to walk out into a warzone. His friends
