Hello all,
There is now a dice mod:
[ dice ] xdy [ /dice ]
Will roll a Y sided die, X times.
Original Roll String: 2d6 (STATIC)
2 6-Sided Dice: (4, 3) = 7

If you edit the post, you get the "Fixed" tag there to indicate that there may be some cheating involved...

Nod, if you edit the post it says fixed... unless you break it. So I guess we need to enforce no editting in those topics...

This should be as close to true random as you can get. (at least, no one should be able to predict it and the probability should be correct.)

Accounting Troll: And over here we have a random number generator
Troll: Nine Nine Nine Nine Nine Nine
Dilbert: Are you sure that's random?
Accounting Troll: That's the problem with randomness. You can never be sure.

No. When you post, you get a different number. It's like you can roll the dice as many times as you want, but only the time when you post counts. The number you see when you preview is NOT the number that is rolled. It's just a random number that matches the same criteria you had before.
Original Roll String: 2d6
2 6-Sided Dice: (4, 3) = 7
This MIGHT be 11, but if so, it's because I randomly rolled an 11 when I posted, not because it's 11 when I previewed it.

0 sided dice don't make sense and don't break things so I didn't make it an exception... I guess I could.
Original Roll String: 2d6+3
2 6-Sided Dice: (1, 2)+3 = 6
Did I mention that you can do math on the results too?

True enough, only simple math, the basic add, subtract, multiply, divide.

If you are in a forum where people can edit their posts, you should pay close attention and only play with the person if you trust them.
Go ahead and tell me how.

well, I have a new version that will give different error messages. Basically, it assumes you are trying to make three rolls (because of the spaces.)

Here's what the code that gets released tomorrow will output:
Original Roll String: seventeendfour
seventeen four-Sided Dice Results: ('seventeen' must mean 1): Uh... four? I never heard of a 'four' sided die
Kind of funny, but the dice roller only understands numeric characters, not alphabetic characters.

Right, as I've stated before, this isn't "secure" so if you don't trust the person you are playing with, then don't play with them or find another dice mechanism. This is just a handy little tool.

Folks, there is a special topic for test posts... if you have no other reason to post in this topic- don't.

It would be pretty easy to do... but why? If there is a reason, I'll do it on the new board.

In the 3.0 version, the dice rolls will be much more secure. The original were created assuming that people have no reason to cheat...

No, I don't think it is. I don't want to play with people who are going to go about cheating. The whole site has a premise that people will not cheat. It's unfortunate that it has happened at all.

The result(s) will be stored in the database. Even deleting the tag will keep the roll with the post, so if a dice roll is put back in, it will have the same result.
