Really want to see someone answer Jackal's call to replace CynicalGamer at this point, in case anyone's undecided

I did not know that. Games I have watched on other sites worked a bit differently I guess. I wasn't expecting this. This should be mentioned somewhere; if I had known this was normal I probably would not have freaked out so much.

Look at it this way: The pacing around here is exactly what enables busy people to participate -- any significantly faster pacing would exclude pretty much anyone with a job.
