THE LEAGUE MAFIA

It was time for a new season of the league, but last year didn't count! How were they supposed to determine a draft order when no one trusted anyone else after last season's sabotage? It was time for a change... The gang decided that if they invited more out of towners, they could pin the losses on them and maybe less backstabbing would take place this season. But no one won the Shiva Bowl, so who got first pick? They thought to the Las Vegas draft and decided to invite all of the Out of Towners to Kevin and Jenny's house for this year's draft. They started a draft, but squabbling broke out immediately ... and it turned ugly. Who would go that far to get the players they wanted in fantasy football? It was time to find out, and to determine the fairest draft order at the same time. This season would not be a repeat of last.

This game features an

auction mechanic

on Days 1 and 3. Players will privately bid for football players to be on their teams. Eligible football players may or may not grant power roles, but no information outside of player name, team, and position will be given pre-draft.

General

1. Be familiar with the sitewide rules and guidelines.
2. Personal attacks will not be tolerated. Use of homophobic, racist, sexist, or any other derogatory slurs falls under this rule. Keep it civil.
3. Play to your win condition.
4. Unless otherwise specified in your role PM or by me, you may not communicate outside of this thread while the game is running.
5. Do not quote or post any screen captures of any private communication to which you have access. This includes game-related PMs, QuickTopics, and instant messaging logs. Paraphrasing is okay.
6. If it is not visible to the naked eye, do not post it. This includes, but is not limited to: invisible text, tiny text, encrypted text, and text hidden within tags. Spoiler text, however, is allowed, as long as it is used within reason.
7. If you have the ability to edit your posts, don't use it in my game.
8. Regular and boldface
   dark purple

Activity

1. Prods will be issued to players if they have not posted within a 72-hour period. Players who have been prodded have 48 hours to respond
   in the game thread
   before a replacement is sought.
2. Players who have been prodded 3 times are subject to replacement without further notice. After three prods, replacements will happen upon my discretion. Prod timers re-set with each new game Day.
3. Posting content is an absolute must. If a player posts nothing but prod dodges for an entire game Day, he or she will be subject to replacement upon my discretion.
4. If you anticipate being away for at least 48 hours, please PM me AND post a V/LA notice in the thread with the expected date of your return.

Pre-Game

1. During Pre-Game you will receive your role PM. Confirm by PM, as instructed.
2. Confirmed players will be bolded on the player list. When 12/13 players have confirmed, the 24-hour strategy period will begin.
3. After the 24-hour strategy period, the 4-day draft will begin, the specific rules of which can be found in the next post.
4. The mafia may discuss in their QT during pre-game until I instruct them not to.

Day

1. Days will have a fixed deadline of 14 real-time days. Deadline extensions will be granted only in extreme circumstances.
2. Players may vote to No Lynch; a no lynch will occur if a majority of players vote for no lynch or if no majority is achieved by deadline.
3. Lynch is achieved by simple majority.
4. Once majority is reached, no further votes or unvotes will count.
5. Votes should be on a separate line and flushed left, and MUST be bolded (e.g.,
   Vote: Amrun
   ). The same applies to vote revocations (e.g.,
   Unvote
   ). Unvotes are preferred but not necessary when switching votes (e.g.,
   Unvote, Vote: Amrun
   ). Use of the vote tags (e.g., VOTE: Amrun) is optional. Abbreviations are okay as long as it's clear for whom the vote is made.
6. If I think it's a vote, it is a vote.
7. All players, including the lynched player, are allowed to discuss in twilight phase until I post the death scene.
8. Dead players may make one "Bah!" post that contains no game-related content, but it must also contain a picture of a sheep and/or the word "OTTERCOCKS"

Night

1. Nights in this game will have a 72 hour deadline, and I reserve as much as 24 hours after that to process actions and post the flavor scene.
2. Players who have a night action to submit must send it in before the announced deadline. I accept provisional actions up until the announced deadline, at which time I will use the last action submitted.

Moderator Actions

1. Flavor is for entertainment purposes only and has no significance in the game.
2. If there is an error in the vote count or something similar, bold your concern in the thread. Please PM me for all other issues.
3. Violations of these rules will result in consequences. Pretending to violate these rules will also result in consequences. What those consequences are depend on the severity of the action and on the game state.
4. Any situation not covered above will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

I reserve the right to add, modify, or remove rules as necessary. I will notify you of all changes in the thread.

Draft Rules

-The draft starts now, at

Thursday, May 10, 5pm EST

. The thread will be open, but NO VOTES WILL BE COUNTED DURING THIS TIME.

-The draft will last 2 days (48 hours).

-Minimum initial bids are $10. After that, bids increase in increments of $1 minimum.

-Bids cannot be withdrawn, but a player’s money is not decreased unless (s)he actually wins the auction.

-A player’s combined outstanding bids must be equal or less than his or her current total available funds. In other words, you may not bid more money than you have available. Once you place a bid, that money is unavailable until you are no longer the highest bidder.

-If two bids are submitted for the same player at the same amount, the tie will be decided by PM time stamps.

-If a player goes without a new bid for 24 hours, the current high bidder will win the player.

-During the last 6 hours of the draft, no initial bids may be started.

-There will be a strategizing period of 1 day (24 hours), starting at

. All players with a mod-designated QT may discuss during this time and throughout the draft.

-During this time period, any player may submit

pre-bids.

In other words, when the official draft starts, pre-bids will become bids immediately. In case of a tie, the winner will be decided by a random number generator. You will be notified if there is a conflict with your bid.

-After that, the draft will last 4 days (96 hours), starting at

If I happen to get multiple players that each grant abilities, can I use them all at once?

Regardless of how many players you have, and how many powers they grant, only one

football player ability may be used per night.

Q:

For bidding, if we tie up our money in a bid, will we be notified immediately if we are outbid, thus releasing our money back to rebid?

A:

Not during the pre-bid strategy session, no. During the draft, bids will be updated as close to real-time as possible. In case of a tie, you will be notified, but otherwise, just keep track of who you bid for and how much. If the winning bid matches your bid and you don't receive a PM, you are the top bidder. (You can inquire at any time and I'll send periodic updates as well.)

Q:

Will there be a board with the current bids on each player?

A:

The top bid for each player will be public, but not the bidder.

Q:

Will the winner of each player be announced?

A:

No. You will know if you won a player and that's it.

Q:

Will the powers each player grant be known during or after the bid process?

A:

You will only learn whether or not a player grants a power, and if so, what he grants, when you win a player for your team.

But Shiva found that when she was actually at the draft, it was harder to fit in than she thought. What if they realized she was actually a woman? What if she gave herself away?

. The thread will be open, but NO VOTES WILL BE COUNTED DURING THIS TIME.

-The draft will last 2 days (48 hours).

-Minimum initial bids are $10. After that, bids increase in increments of $1 minimum.

-Bids cannot be withdrawn, but a player’s money is not decreased unless (s)he actually wins the auction.

-A player’s combined outstanding bids must be equal or less than his or her current total available funds. In other words, you may not bid more money than you have available. Once you place a bid, that money is unavailable until you are no longer the highest bidder.

-If two bids are submitted for the same player at the same amount, the tie will be decided by PM time stamps.

After last season, everyone was treating Ruxin with kid gloves. He seemed so genuinely hurt by the "collusion" and the cheating that no one could imagine that he would take part in it.

He vowed that last year's "clown car of lies" would not be repeated. Ruxin was almost like a holy man.

It was too much. The league knew this was too un-Ruxin like. They started snooping around and Ruxin began to panic. He started yelling about collusion and revenge until it happened again.

Ruxin couldn't handle the stress. He'd been aiming to make sure he won the Shiva Bowl this year, no matter what - to get back at Kevin and Pete for what they'd done.

With no Shiva around to heal his stroke this time, Ruxin was out of the game for good.

– Bears Running Back – Doctor – Matt Forte is a generous guy. He visits a league member each night; if they are admitted to the hospital, he cheers them so much that they recover.

Antonio Gates

– Chargers Tight End – Jack of All Trades – Antonio Gates is multi-talented; he saw success in both basketball and football in college, and professionally, is a versatile tight end for the Chargers. Ruxin was mad at Gates for scoring too many points because of how varied and successful Gates’ play is. Gates possesses the following abilities:

– 1-Shot Cop: Gates can review footage to see if a league member committed a foul. He may investigate his target to receive a result of “innocent” or “guilty.”

– 1-Shot Tracker: Gates is an excellent receiver and made his mark by becoming Drew Brees’ favorite target. He doesn’t take his eyes off the football, which gave him the skills to track a sketchy opponent if necessary. He may track a football player once.

– 1-Shot Injury Proof: Gates doesn’t typically take time off when he is injured, but instead suffers through it, even if it affects his play. The first time he would have been injured, he continues to play anyway.

Josh Cribbs

– Browns Kick Return Specialist – 2-Shot Vigilante – Ruxin once tried to get Josh Cribbs to score two touchdowns by manipulating him with a child terminal cancer patient. Cribbs might not like Ruxin, but he will score two touchdowns anyway … just not in that particular game. Josh Cribbs may attempt to kill a league member once per night for a total of two attempts.

Terrell Sugg

s – Ravens Linebacker – Roleblocker – Just like Terrell Suggs showed up just in time to ruin Ruxin’s plan with Josh Cribbs, he is the consummate interrupter professionally. In college, he set the school-wide record for tackles for losses and his career hasn’t slowed down since; he has received countless honors for his 2011 NFL season, including the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year. Each night, he can target a league member and block all of his outgoing actions, including directions sent to football players’ on the target’s team.

Maurice Jones-Drew

– Jaguars Running Back – Macho 2-Shot Non-Consecutive Hider – Maurice Jones-Drew is a powerhouse running back best known for his elusiveness. He can juke around players and slip out of sight and never be caught. He’s the most valuable player on his team and carries the whole team on his back, so he’s not the one being protected. Maurice Jones-Drew can hide behind a league member up to two times, but not on consecutive nights. When MoJo hides, all abilities that target him or his league member will fail.

Brent Grimes

– Falcons Cornerback – 1-Shot Jailkeeper – Grimes is a good cornerback and can execute a quarterback containment play perfectly. He can target a league member and that player will be jailkept for the night; the target will be unable to relay orders to his team and will be protected from one nightkill.

Sidney Rice

– Seahawks Wide Receiver – On The Bench – Sidney Rice is a great player and played in the 2009 pro bowl… But he’s a receiver, the most injury-prone position. On top of that, he seems to have a penchant for taking hits. He’s currently on the Injured Reserve list and can’t help anyone out. Sorry!

Plaxico Burress

Burress has a gun, but doesn’t know how to use it without shooting himself. A related mishap landed him in jail, which was the reason Andre got boned. If a football player(s) targets Burress or his league member at night, Burress will shoot the football player, injuring him permanently. If another league member targets Burress or Burress’ league member, Burress will shoot the visiting League Member, killing him. If the visiting league member kills Burress’ league member, Burress will kill both league members and himself.

Ronnie Brown

– Eagles Running Back – 1-Shot Watcher – Pete once trade raped Andre intro trading him Ronnie Brown. Ronnie Brown is famous for being featured in the wildcat formation, where he has to take a shotgun snap. In a shotgun snap, the player can’t take his eyes off the ball in preparation for the snap but also has to know where the blitz is coming from. By perfecting this play, Ronnie Brown perfected his ability to watch everything around him. He will be informed which league members or football players visit his chosen target, if any. However, Ronnie Brown is injury prone. As soon as he makes his move, he will be injured and no longer able to play.

– 1-Shot Self-Watch – Willis falls back to cover any receivers and must keep an eye on the field, especially himself. He watches league member and his entire team for one night and will be informed of any visits by league members or football players.

– 1-Shot Cop – Willis can perform a quarterback spy to investigate one quarterback in play. Willis will receive the result of “innocent” or “guilty,” as pertains to the quarterback’s league member.

– Patriots Linebacker – Quarterback Role Cop – One of a linebacker’s most important plays is a quarterback spy. Mayo can spy on any quarterbacks currently in play (one per night) in order to learn his role.

Arian Foster

– Texans Running Back – Team Lightning Rod – Sporting News called Foster “the most interesting man in the NFL.” All actions aimed at anyone on Foster’s team are redirected to Foster. (In other words, any actions targeting Foster’s league member or any other football player on his or her team will instead be used on Foster.) Due to his famous “Namaste,” in which he blessed his league member, Arian Foster himself will die in place of his league member if action resolution would have led to death.

Cameron Jordan

– Saints Defensive End – 1-Shot Bounty Hunter – Cameron Jordan is now the defensive end for the Saints. Remember what happened to the old defensive end, Bobby McCray? He was fined for injuring Brett Favre in part of what was a huge NFL scandal called the “bounty scandal” or “Bountygate” in which the Saints were punished for paying players to injure opposing players. Even though the incentive program might be over officially, the Saints still have a certain way of playing. During any night, Jordan may permanently injure another player.

Adrian Peterson

– Vikings Running Back – Purple Jesus – Adrian Peterson is known by the nickname “Purple Jesus.” Jesus can’t be a bad guy, right? Peterson’s league member will return “innocent” to all relevant investigations.

Aaron Rodgers

– Packers Quarterback – Neighborizer – Aaron Rodgers was 2011’s AP Male Athlete of the Year and the Superbowl MVP. Everyone wants Aaron Rodgers on their team, despite his humble community college beginnings. You may open a QT each night to discuss possible trades with another league member.

Ben Roethlisberger

– Steelers Quarterback – 2-Shot Voyeur – Big Ben might be a decorated athlete for the successful Pittsburgh Steelers, but he’s also known as “Rapelsberger.” “Voyeur” is probably too kind of a name for him, but nevertheless, Big Ben may spy twice (the number of his rape accusations). Ben will spy on a league member to learn what sorts of actions, if any, were performed on him or her.

Michael Vick

– Eagles Quarterback – Bodyguard – Despite his legal and financial troubles that have earned him notoriety in recent years, Michael Vick overcame a difficult childhood and a dark past to become the 2010 NFL Comeback Player of the Year. In 2009, his teammates unanimously chose him for the Ed Block Courage Award, which recognizes commitment to the principles of courage and sportsmanship. These principles extend beyond the sports field; Vick provides for his entire family and many friends, and is active in several charities. If Vick thinks a player might come to harm unjustly, he can take any hits that might come that player’s way. However, if he does so, he will become injured and unable to act further.

Tim Tebow

– Jets Quarterback – Priest – Tim Tebow is a successful, but controversial, quarterback for the Jets. His religious devotion has been the cause of a lot of praise, criticism, and contention. The NCAA even instituted a rule about not putting messages in black eye paint. This rule is unofficially dubbed “The Tebow Rule,” as most people believe it was designed particularly to stop Tebow from writing Bible verses in his eye paint. This commitment to getting his message across has carried into his professional career; “Tebowing” is now a term for kneeling and praying. Tebow’s piousness rivals that of a priest, and as such, any league member with Tebow on his or her team cannot cast a hammer vote. Hammer votes will simply not count.

Rob Gronkowski

– Patriots Tight End – Neighbor – Gronkowski is a successful tight end for the Patriots. He is the first tight end in history to lead the NFL in receiving touchdowns for a whole season. Notably, he is part of “The Boston TE Party,” a special relationship between himself and fellow tight end Aaron Hernandez. Gronkowski and Hernandez were the only tight ends on the Patriots roster in 2011 and worked extremely well together. If any other league member drafts Aaron Hernandez at any time, he or she will be in a neighborhood with the league member that drafted Rob Gronkowski.

He has a high accuracy rating; his highest is 89.7 (26 out of 29). Therefore, Janikowski has two chances to “kick,” each with an 89.7% success rate. If successful, Janikowski may target a league member OR football player to learn what action he or she performed, if any, but not the targets of said action(s). If Janikowski targets a league member, he will not learn the actions of the league member’s team.

Calvin Johnson

– Lions Wide Receiver – 1-Shot Saboteur – Calvin Johnson, a highly paid wide receiver, is particularly athletic, which has earned him the name of “Megatron.” Like Megatron, Johnson can transform into a gun for his league member to yield. The gun can only be aimed at football players, and, if successful, will injure the football player permanently. Johnson can only transform once.

Ray Rice

– Ravens Running Back – 1-Shot Gunsmith – Ray Rice, now a successful running back for the Baltimore Ravens, was not always so lucky. When he was only one year old, his father was killed in a drive by shooting. To avenge his father, he can check one league member for the presence of a gun.

Cam Newton

– Panthers Quarterback – Miller – Cam Newton won the Heisman, a championship, and was the first overall draft pick in the same year, one of only three to do so in NFL History. However, there was a controversy regarding his eligibility in college. His father demanded money from schools in order for Newton to play there; however, there was no evidence that either Cam or Cam’s current school were aware of the solicitation, and no evidence that Newton’s father actually received any money, so Newton remained eligible and went on to win the Heisman by a landslide. Still, the taint imposed on him by his father will never quite go away. When a league member drafts Cam Newton, he or she will appear as “guilty” to relevant investigations, regardless of actual guilt.

Reggie Wayne

– Colts Wide Receiver – Jelly Without Peanut Butter – Reggie Wayne, despite being skilled, has been largely ineffectual since Peyton Manning was injured and consequently transferred to the Broncos. In light of this, Wayne won’t do much for any team he’s on. Sorry!

Drew Brees

– Saints Quarterback – Negotiator – Drew Brees just got his Franchise Tag, so he’s sure to play, right? Right? Wrong! Drew Brees is holding out for a longer contract and refuses to play. Sorry!

Peyton Manning

– Broncos Quarterback – Bulletproof Post Restriction – Peyton Manning has had a long career, and even when dropped by his long-time team, the Colts, he still got a contract with the Broncos. He is well-known for his quirky play calling. Manning’s league member will be immune to kills, but must adhere to the following post restriction. Every sentence of every post by Manning’s league member must contain at least one of the following words: ain, apple, bacon, black, blue, bonanza, brown, buffalo, chili, chocolate, dice, disco, dumbo, Florida, gorilla, green light, hot sauce, ice cream, Japan, José, orange, ox, pickle, purple, Richmond, river, Sally, scat, slug, soul train, taco, tornado, tree, Xbox, yoyo. The tense or pluralization of any of the words may be changed. For example, “gorilla” may become “gorillas” and “pickle” may become “pickled,” but “disco” may not become “discoing.” If any sentence is missing one of these words, the league member will receive a warning. If (s)he exceeds three warnings per game day, (s)he will be modkilled.

Glen Coffee

– 49ers Running Back – Demotivational Speaker – Glen Coffee had an impressive rookie season, but retired in order to go back to school because “God wants him to take another path.” Apparently, that path is getting arrested and being a “self-employed motivational speaker.” Many thought he had a promising career in the works, but it didn’t work out. Sorry!

Vincent Jackson

– Buccaneers Wide Receiver – Roster Exempt – In 2010, Vincent Jackson refused to sign the Chargers’ one-year contract. He held out for so long that he skipped training, and when he finally signed, he signed at a much lower tender and had to serve six games of penalty. Despite his skill, he is Roster Exempt for now. Sorry!

Fred Jackson

– Bills Running Back – On The Bench – 2011 was shaping up to be Fred Jackson’s best season yet – until he fractured his fibula. Before this injury, he had never missed any time in his professional career, but there’s a first time for everything. He’s on the Injured Reserve list. Sorry!

Jamaal Charles

– Chiefs Running Back – On The Bench – Charles is a talented running back … when he’s playing. He injured his ACL in week 2 of the 2011 season and is on the Injured Reserve list. Sorry!

Ryan Mathews

– Chargers Running Back – Robbed by the Kool-Aid Man – Matthews is a promising young running back, but between Mike Tolbert stealing carries and Mathews’ fumble/injury problems, he hasn't quite yet turned into a star. He’s not going to anytime soon. Sorry!

– Titans Running Back – CJ2Lame – Despite being the NFL's rushing leader in 2010 and the fastest guy in the NFL, he was pretty ineffective in 2011. He’s going to continue underperforming. Sorry!

Michael Bush

– Bears Running Back – Backup – Michael Bush is a good running back in his own right, but he always seems to be backup to a star. Bush will get the ability of the first football player injured for the duration of his injury. This will only happen once.

My thoughts: I enjoyed designing this game SO MUCH, and seeing it play out was exciting the whole time. Big thanks to Mastermind of Sin and Vi, who really helped me out with this. It's the most complicated game I've run, and I learned a lot through doing it.

By its nature, it was very swingy, and I warned people of this before signing up. I wanted the game to be fun and entertaining, which is why I pushed for people into the flavor who would find it funny that Taco couldn't manage his team or that Andre wasn't a real doctor. There were many iterations of this game that were overwhelmingly town or scum sided, but most fell somewhere in the middle. The iteration that ended up playing out was a little town-sided.

The basic idea of this set-up I really loved seeing in action: people bidding on powers they don't know are good or bad. What I wanted to do was have the mystery of not knowing what you were bidding for, but without the crap shoot of something like 100 Boxes. There were lots of strategies employed in bidding - some successful, and some unsuccessful. Some people bid only on players from teams they liked. Some people bid on players that were notorious, thinking the power roles would come from there (closer to being correct), and some people bid exclusively on very good players, thinking the roles would be based on that (mostly incorrect). Some people just tried to snipe lower ranked players. I really liked seeing the different strategies.

This basic concept is, I think, applicable to many different games, and it was this mechanic that inspired the game. In essence, this was a game of WIFOM, and I loved seeing it happen.

I was hoping for more WIFOM to come up in the day play, but it didn't really happen that way. LLD was doubted for having an out of place claim, but not lynched. PeregrineV was never discovered having more money than usual. Glork was never questioned for being a bulletproof vig role cop. Locke Lamora was never caught out for being the only player with what he thought was a more standard role (doctor) - and he was, of course, naive, though he had no idea.

I welcome criticism and thoughts on the design and modding. Overall, though, I hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

I feel like the game was basically impossible to balance. Though there was a degree of post-draft role manipulation, the initial "setup" was based entirely on a set of randomly drafted abilities, which wound up favoring the town fairly heavily, in my humble opinion.

Yes, it was basically impossible to balance, which is why my warning for the game made sure to mention swinginess. I wanted to decrease swing as much as I could. One way of doing this was the injury mechanic; another was allowing scum to transfer money; another was allowing only one football player action per night. Still, nothing could take swing out of an inherently swingy mechanic, which is why I emphasized fun over balance.

Oh, and for anyone doing this again, the 24 hour time limit thing to make the auction close was a mistake. It was originally intended to keep the bidding active at all times, but that didn't work. So I'd skip that or make it 48 at the least, if you were to use this system again.

I'm glad you liked it. That was part of the uniqueness of the game. Some power roles targeted football players; some targeted mafia players; a very few could target either.

This changed the effectiveness of those roles, because you can find at that Brent Grimes visited Player X and still have no idea who that means or whom Brent Grimes belongs to.

There wasn't. But flavor knowledge would suggest that Josh Cribbs absolutely hates Ruxin - and I emphasized flavor knowledge in this game for a reason, and advertised it as having bastard elements. It's important to note that Ruxin was scum. It was a balancing measure. Josh Cribbs would not have worked for Ruxin OR Taco, due to Taco's role, so ONLY if Shiva got Josh Cribbs would scum get extra kills.

It's not something I would do in a "normal" game, but this wasn't a normal game.
