Murder on the HMS Regalia

Spoiler: Opening Flavour

The HMS Regalia set sail from the Port of London on the 12th day of June, 1750, its destination Bermuda. The fourteen crewmen on board were all officers of a secretive division of the English government named ‘Regalia’, specializing in assassinations. On this occasion they were tasked with assassinating the boss of an organized crime syndicate, called ‘Sicarius’. Previous reconnaissance missions indicated that the target was residing in a mansion on the Bermuda coastline. Of course, the crew were travelling on a frigate, therefore they would only be able to travel at a moderate pace. It would be a number of days before they reached their destination. On their first night on the high seas, all but one of the officers were in a state of deep sleep, the other ensuring that one unfortunate soul aboard His Majesty’s Ship would not awaken the next morning.
When the crew awoke the next morning, they saw no sign of the Captain at the helm. When they arrived at his quarters, it was clear. The Captain lay awkwardly inert on his bed in a pool of dried auburn blood, with various other wounds apparent on his uniform.
He had made his last voyage. His throat was slit, from ear to ear, yet there was no knife in sight, eliminating the possibility of suicide. A thoroughly professional effort. It was then the crew realized; they were indeed sent on an assassination mission, but they had a much bigger problem before they had even arrived at their destination. Sicarians were among them and they would continue to murder until they could dominate outright the Regalians.

Regalia had been around since Roman rule - or at least the concept had: a secret unit of the government that operated above the law. With centuries of crime literature to follow, it all seems rather clichéd now. But it was still a tightly kept secret back then.

D3f3nd3r was one of the first to be recruited to Regalia. The appointment came after years of service in the Army and to the King as a royal guard. The first thing he had been told upon joining was that a crime syndicate, Sicarius, was the sworn enemy of British rule and that their goal was to neutralize it at any cost. So when its leader’s location was revealed, Regalia left posthaste, taking some officers from other divisions as backup. However, with the murder of their captain, it was soon very clear that there were traitors on board. Knowing that they also had the means to isolate someone, the Regalia officers spent most of the day debating what to do and with whom. Eventually, they decided upon disposing of D3f3nd3r and quarantining Espeonage, another officer. The decision’s wiseness would only manifest over time.

Bitmap. The name was foreign to most. Hardly anyone from Regalia knew him. One would not envy the position he had found himself in, given his predecessors' less than active backgrounds. The crew took their time, weighed up their options, and after much debate, simply settled on him. However, unbeknown to them he was on their side all along, only being denied a chance to show it. Disappointed, the officers retreated to their quarters for a night's rest, as their enemeies began deciding which one wouldn't return.

The crew started their fourth day by tenuously voting on all sides. Eventually, one member garnered a one-vote-shy majority, whereupon one evil Sicarius operative swooped in for the kill. The stakes were now even, and Regalia was backed into a corner from which escape was simply impossible, even for them.

The ship was never found, and when informed of the fact that they didn't arrive at their destination, the King retroactively disbanded Regalia. The ruse was over.

I'll go a bit more in depth later, but I'll say right away that I was very impressed with the scum performance. I might nominate them for Best Scum Group.

Some quick notes:

-I felt bad for TheTrollie, as his reads were fairly accurate and 2/3 of his targets were spot on, but unfortunately image's ninja power tainted the credibility of his claim.
-I forgot that BK201 and image were scum a few times, but Malakittens always read scum for me, lol. Good on her for surviving the rope, however - makes up for any previous anti-town play.
-I was disappointed that the BG and Vengeful died first. I would have liked one or both of those roles to come into play. Alas, just the way things went.
-I would have liked to see scum use their quarantine kill (the thing I spent the longest time trying to balance in the review process), but quarantine targets on the town part sadly rendered it unnecessary.
-As I said in the Dead QT, I was appalled at drmyshotgun's play on Day 3. I won't blacklist him, but I'd certainly be a little doubtful about playing with him again.

Lastly, let me say again how impressed I was at overall scum performance. A thoroughly deserved win, and in my opinion worthy of the nomination I put forth. The town also made a noble effort and I also approved of their persistence, even when they knew they were screwed.

Heh. If you put all the death scenes together you'll notice that they get smaller and smaller as I got increasingly disenchanted with writing flavour. Hence, D3f3nd3r had a big, long lynch scene (for me, anyway) and endgame took up all of three lines. But I knew the whole premise of assassins trapped at sea was too good to not use somehow.

I liked the setting as well. Now I should really come up with flavour that doesn't focus on a secret government department.
