yeah. i don't really think there's a length of time that we need to wait to give someone a title if it's appropriate.

TheButtonmen wrote:At the moment the rational for the age requirement on titles is that we want posters to establish themselves before we start titling them, it also provides a check for staying power of a title. If a title is good now and it won't be relevant for them in a month or two when they hit the six month mark I'm doubtful that it's a really a good title.

Thoughts?

Disagree. If they've established themselves enough that the general consensus is that a title is worthwhile for them, then they're established, whether they've been here for 2 months or 5 years.

Relevancy of a title is always an issue. We have plenty of people with titles that don't relate to anything relevant anymore. Wikid, Professor Paragon, even my title. Reck's still resonates, but even it says GD when his thread is in F62.

In other words: there's no need for the requirement because it's OTHER people nominating players. If we had a bunch of people who had been here 3 weeks coming in and nominating themselves, then a rule might be worth it. But there's really no need for an artificial requirement now.

Stranger Danger is leaps and bounds better than just Stranger. I would not be in favor of him just being "Stranger" as that'll be inscrutable in a year or two from now.

I like EGOT, but I don't like Egotistical. While Vi clearly likes his shiny things (and let's be honest, most of us do), I don't think he's particularly egotistical.

You really think that winning Best Mafia Discussion/Wiki poster and Paragon of Scumhunters is our equivalent of an EGOT?

I'd argue that winning Paragon, Don Corleone and Third Party is ours. Not that there's anything wrong with the Professor award; just that in the pantheon of individual awards, it's not super high up there.

Enough discussion to reach a consensus on one or two variations of a title, five scummers supporting it and my approval are the only requirements for a title, time isn't a factor at all.

Awesome. Thanks for the swiftness of your judgment and action, fairy.

Oh. In that case I put my title back in my pocket (because it's kind of a great title and should go to someone who it fits) and suggest:

Et tu?

puns are often made out of homonyms.

Wikipedia wrote:The pun, also called paronomasia, is a form of word play which suggests two or more meanings, by exploiting multiple meanings of words, or of similar-sounding words, for an intended humorous or rhetorical effect.[1][2] These ambiguities can arise from the intentional use and abuse of
homophonic
, homographic, metonymic, or metaphorical language.

Which side do you really want to take? Shakespeare's pun-filled awesomeness or Samuel Johnson's dour dictionary writing? (Johnson is the one that said, "puns are the lowest form of humour.")

This is a greatly superior method to the prior one. Speed titling is perfectly fine. And if you really think of a better one, we now have a title fairy that will change old titles. Perfection is the enemy of good.

ani is mostly right here, and you guys are being ridiculous.

he won't. this is one of the reasons he's a great title fairy: he'll just pick one and go without necessarily getting 100% consent. But he wants admins to give him one for whatever reason, and admins won't step in if there's division.

The spelling thing is pretty compelling to me, but I'll let TBM veto it if he wants. Will probably make a decision after the weekend if no other strong contenders come forward. Keep talking!

The spelling thing has to be the lamest idea we've had. Even lamer than the "buttonmen is plural" thing. TBM is not a particularly bad speller, and even if he is, that's hardly noteworthy.

It's a little weird since the title basically relies on the fact that another suggested title for him had the worst "ass" in it and its weird to base a title on another title, but it seems good enough.

truthfully, i kind of feel like the title fairy of the day should always have the title of Title Fairy until he or she steps down just so people don't spend their thinking power just trying to get the Title Fairy a title. Also, descriptive.

well it works because it's a title and he's the title fairy. he doesn't get a colored name. Anyway, the point is to stop endless discussion about it, not to maintain some sort of consistency.

It's funny, but it's a bad idea. You don't really want new people confused about who's an admin.

adrnin a
much
better title, but it's just not a good idea. I don't think Charnber is funny at all and it only slightly relates to the thing. Also, it kinda look like a pokemon name.

although I wonder if either look silly if it's not bolded. The r and n move farther apart, no?

What's the reasoning behind that title? is it that UN has split personalities?

For those not familiar with the Andres Agassi reference:

PS. Yes, I know he already has a title. I like this one better.

The title of the song is "Number One Stunna" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_One_Stunna

EDIT: Jesus. You were only 5 when that song came out.

maybe so, but I can think of one person in total who has been retitled, and that's Flay. There may be others, but none come to mind. My point being that titles are more or less permanent.

yeah. as in "people are going to get punished/screamed at/etc if this thing doesn't happen." or "if they don't fix my cable by six tonight, heads will roll"

but yes, the violent implication (i.e. people are going to get their heads chopped off) is enough to make it appropriate for a mafia setting.

Still, I like Hydrated better.

Because it's pretty meh. I think this is one of those cases where a person turns down a title that was widely accepted -- as is his right -- but means there should probably be a cooling off period. No need to search for further titles for some time now.

i don't know anything about it, but kdowns case makes me want to give snakes the title.

when oman was in charge barely any titles were given out toward the end, so maybe that's why you think there's some amazing standard, maestro. Titles shouldn't be hoarded like they're somehow devalued by people getting them. my title is no less good or bad because more people are getting titles.

my general policy is that once someone declines a great title for themselves, we should stop for like... 6 months or so. That's particularly true if they SUGGEST a different title for themselves (and even more particularly if that title they suggest is positive sounding, as "every word counts" so obviously is. I know you think your legacy is both being wordy and advocating brevity, but really it's just that you're wordy).

also, those alternative mastin titles are not good.

that's a bad suggestion.

o and th are both terrible titles for N. It sounds funny here, but the humor will be lost when it's actually on it.

nominations tend to bounce off each other too. and the more people reading the thread at a time thinking about nominations for person A the more likely they are to start to brainstorm about other people they think have something about them that warrants a nomination.

for the record, I still think Orange Static or Orange in Sharp Contrast are the best options.

The situation is kind of funny not because he asked for a title, there have been dozens of people who have done that and we usually don't do anything about that. It's that he asked for a title and it was so specific and weird: The Blue Blur. Which is kind of funny on its own, but funnier still when reversed and yet makes almost as much sense.

what the likelihood that as a group we actually give someone a title they want if they try the same thing? we're a mob. we don't exactly work on precedent. I'd rather give titles that amuse us as a community, not use it as some sort of greater justice thing.

AngryPidgeon wrote:I don't get all the dumb rules that go with titles.

People who ask for one get a slap on the wrist and cant have one? If a title fits, let them have it. I get that we don't want to force titles on people, but we're so freaking slow at this process anyways that someone asking for a title shouldn't just give them a probation period from getting one.

I agree with this. Yes, sometimes it hurts when titles are stupid. And no one likes the guy who tries to give himself a nickname (though I'll point out that with a few exceptions we are ALL using names we gave ourselves). But let's focus on the fun of it rather than the self-righteousness of it. If a name either fits or is funny or both, give them the title.

Remember that anyone given a title can decline it. If FakeGod didn't feel like the joke was in good fun (as intended), he can decline it. If he's the self-deprecating kind of person, he may like it. If it's a good title, let him decide! Same goes with the Metal Sonic titles.

I think he's making a I Am The Walrus joke, but
I Am The Walrus
(or
Ringo Star
) would be better nominations if we're doing that. Still, avatar nominations and all means unless there's something else to it, it doesn't seem like a likely route.

Do you realize you have been auto-correcting the word
phase
for a year and a half? Search your posts site-wide for "day phrase"

was going to nominate her earlier, but we were in an ongoing game when I found this (and then searched her posts for "day phrase" and "phrase"), wanted to play it safe.

also if the title makes her stop auto-correcting it's a self-fulfilling prophecy

this title is probably terrible

G is the 7th letter of the alphabet

C is the 3rd letter, B is the 2nd letter.

3rd letter + 2nd letter + 2 total letters = 7, 7=G, therefore GD = CDB, CDB is my Best Man confirmed

Good lord. Even N is for Normal is better than those.

I don't know that playing off N is the right way to go with a title for him.

More realistically I use my phone for about 10% of my MS stuff. It doesn't make much sense to keep it in scumobile for that.

When a king is coronated, he doesn't put the crown on his head himself. In any event, this job is supposed to mostly be fun for the person doing it. If you're too busy and it's become way more of a job, let's put someone else do it.. Normally we do staff announcements and what not, but it seems appropriate to the thread for users to nominate other people and someone come in afterwards to decree by despotic fiat who will take over.

Sentencing Order: SleepyKrew

The defendant has entered a plea of guilty before the Court of Titles on March 28th, 2015 to one count of standing around not looking busy. On that same date the defendant waived his right to a penalty phase jury and the court began the penalty phase at a non-jury hearing on March 29th, 2015. The parties presented matters in aggravation and mitigation during the penalty phase hearing. The court now finds as follows:

1. SleepyKrew guilt on the charge of standing around not looking busy has been established beyond a reasonable doubt.

2. SleepyKrew has expressed a sincere desire to atone for his actions.

It Is The Judgement Of This Court:

1. For the crime of standing around not looking busy the defendant is hereby sentenced to three years of Title Fairying with the possibility of early parole should a willing successor be found.

Ordered
at Yet Another Dance of the Title Fairy: Change Up, Site Ideas, this 29th day of March, 2015.

Affirmed

I'll keep you both as title fairy for a week or so while you pass on your worldly knowledge
