Game Rules:

Rule 0: Don't be a dick.
- If you are being a dick, you run the risk of force-replacement or modkill. You may or may not be warned.

General:

- Please adhere to the site rules.
- Do not discuss this game of mafia outside of this thread unless your role PM allows you to do so.
- Day phases will last 2 weeks maximum.
- Night Phases will last 48 hours maximum.
- During night phase, no talking may be done in the thread.
- Do not quote PM's from the mod at all (real or fabricated). Paraphrasing is acceptable.
- If you have any questions about your role, or the game, feel free to PM the mod.
- "Bah" posts are not allowed.
- If you break any of these rules, you will probably be modkilled.

Voting/Player Actions:

- All votes must be in bold format: vote: Nexus for example.
- Try to unvote before voting. Unvotes must also be in bold.
- Any and all votes will be counted, if you wish to waste a day phase voting for someone not in the game, that's fine by me.
- You may vote No Lynch.
- Voting tricks are not acceptable. If you misspell someone's name intentionally, but I get the gist of it, the vote will count.
- A lynch will occur once a majority decision is reached. If no majority is reached by deadline, then no lynch shall occur.
- Following a lynch, it is twilight. You may continue to post until I lock the thread and declare it night.
- If you have a Night Action, you may submit it from Night 1 and each subsequent Night. No other time.

Activity:

- You are expected to post at least once every 48 hours. If you haven't posted for 48 hours, I shall prod you. If you do not respond to the prod within 48 hours (either in thread if it's Day, or via PM during the Night) then I will replace you.
- Similarly, if you require more than three prods, I will force-replace you.

Mechanics:

- Blue is my colour. Please don't use it.

- Confirm by how your Role PM tells you to once you are ready to play.
- Do not edit your posts.
- No impossible/hard to read text, or cryptography.
- The Mod may make mistakes - please point out any mistakes gently. Mistakes will be corrected where possible, but sometimes mistakes are made that cannot be reversed. These will stand as final to be commiserated over after the game.
- If there is a hydra in the game, you must not post in your normal account. Doing so and then not quoting it as a hydra will invite a warning. Excessive failure to post as a hydra and not quoting it will result in force-replacement.
- There are to be no avatar, sig or any other kind of bets placed within the game. Similarly if you bring outside influences into the game, e.g. "I'll do x to y if I'm z" then you will be force replaced or modkilled.
- If you need to get the mod's attention, either PM me, or bold the text you wish to draw to my attention.
- I reserve the right to alter/remove/add any rules as I see fit. You will, of course, be notified if that happens, however.

Hello! I'm ChannelDelibird - call me CDB, (almost) everyone else does. I'm one of the SE players in this game so I'm mainly just going to do what I would normally do as a representative sample of a random mafiascum player. I'll be happy to answer any questions, however, if Bacde, your resident IC, is afk or asleep or eaten by a bear.

Now then! VOTE: gene1991 CONFESS.

Hi, I am DoctorPepper. Some call me DP, but you can address me however you want as long as I know its me. Now, unlike the IC, I have no obligation to answer your questions, however I will try to answer them to help out.

Now, before you start wondering why people are voting people for silly reasons ( like this) - I've seen this in literally all the newbie games I've been in

VOTE: Yessiree because you wanted to mod this game

In MS, we start off with Random Voting Stage or RVS. Since at the start of the game, we have nothing to base our accusations on, we vote randomly until someone slips or offers a serious vote.

Also, we
do not no lynch
day 1. I know some people come from sites which do advocate this practice, but here in this newbie game we uave 7 town and 2 scum. Theoretically, it is possible to no lynch until we need to to get scum, but its bad for town because we have nothing to base our accusations of. Basically with this, we are afforded 3 mislynches, and we can use this to see why they were lynched, who was behind them and was it scum driven.

Okay, I'll let our IC do most of the explaining, from now on haha.
Good luck!

what? I don't really understand what you just said here. You're going to be a typical player? I don't even know how you control for that. Isn't everyone their own style just by feature of being an individual?

Well you don't have to answer this if you don't want to.
But I am wondering if I can choose to not follow the crowd and don't participate in this random voting thing. I think it's dumb. And I play mafia on epicmafia, and I get mad when everyone votes me just because I don't like to follow the preset strategy that everyone else likes to follow. but since the average game there is like 5 minutes, you don't get any time at all to explain yourself. Lynching there isn't really based on scumreads, it's mostly all policy lynches.
I just like to think for myself. and I don't want to follow a strategy if I don't think it's the best. I would just come off as being fake. everyone else can do that random voting if they want.

Well, no, I can't decide to be typical. But I can be normal for me!

It's perfectly fine not to random vote, as long as you're making an effort to help us get the game going in another way. After all, that's why we "random" vote, as we've found over the years that that's been the most effective way of kicking things off - although, to be clear, nothing past your first vote should be random. I'm not a huge fan of calling it a "stage", personally, but that's not really very important.

So, gene, why did you refuse to CONFESS?

Hi Guys! Welcome to Mafia Scum Dot Net--the worlds biggest (and best) website for playing one of the most addicting, frustrating, life-destroying, ridiculous, sensational, hilarious, aneuryism-creating games known to mankind, Mafia!

I'm sure that if you have gotten to this point that you must have read about the game, understand a few of the concepts, or maybe even played before in real life or on a different forum or chatroom somewhere else.

Despite all that, there is still QUITE a bit to learn about this game (and I'm still learning every day), which is why I am here, your resident IC! (IC stands for inexperience-challenged). I'll be doing my best to be a good IC, and will be following this guide here

Despite me having the role "IC", I just want to lend a shoutout to the 3 SE's in the game: CDB, NS, and DrP. I've played with all three of these players and all three of them have earned my respect as both town and mafia players. Any question that you might have for me can and will be answered equally well by these three players.

However, despite these players' abilities to fully answer any inquiries that you can and will have, I am the one with the role of IC this game and I will do my best to make sure you fully understand everything that you need to. I will provide a few basic tips about the etiquette of mafia on this forum, as well as a couple links to help you all get started.

Tips for someone who has no idea what to do

1. Never self-vote or self-hammer. Remember that you are playing to win, and self-voting is ALWAYS playing against your win condition (whether you are mafia or town). There are barely ANY circumstances where it is in your win condition's favor to self-vote.

2. When someone has 1 less than the required number of votes to be lynched, they are considered to be at
L-1
which means that the next vote will "hammer" them being lynched.
NOTHING CAN REVERSE THIS.
Therefore, when someone is at L-1 and you want to vote them, it is in town's best interest to declare
"Intent to hammer"
, which indicates to the person at L-1 that they should claim their role. Claiming your role at any other time should only be done with VERY good reason (such as if you are a cop with a guilty report on someone)

3. Look for scum (or pretend that you are doing so). This game wouldn't be very fun or productive if everyone came in saying "I don't know who the mafia is. I'll just sit around." If you just do something--anything--then people will HAVE to respond to what you do, and you will better be able to judge their alignments based on their reactions.

To learn more about the basics of this game click here
For a some tips on how to play this game click here
To read about a bad reason to suspect someone of being mafia click here

And if you have any other questions, click here!

So far I'm looking forward to a really fun, enjoyable, casual game of mafia, and I hope you are too!

I'm actually developing a game engine that automates the processes of mafia, so you can say I know exactly this game progresses :D

According to my calculations, there is about a 1 in 5 chance that our IC is scum

Behold the power of mathematics!!

5 newbs, 3 SEs, and 1 IC; 7 towns, and 2 mafias.

Based on theory of probability distribution, the 2 mafia members could have a distribution as follows:
  • 2 in newb
  • 2 in SE
  • 1 in newb, 1 in SE
  • 1 in newb, 1 in IC
  • 1 in SE, 1 in IC
If we were to calculate the probability of each instance, it will look like this

Code: Select all

2 in newb 27.78%
2 in SE 8.33%
1 in newb, 1 in SE 41.67%
1 in newb, 1 in IC 13.89%
1 in SE, 1 in IC 8.33%

Sample calculation

1 in newb, 1 in SE

Code: Select all

P = (1 C 5) * (1 C 3) / (2 C 9) = 15 / 36 = 41.67%

However, this tells us information about 2 people. Since we can only vote on one person at a time, we need to narrow it down. We do this by combining the results of our previous calculations, and calculating the probability of at least 1 person from the user groups is the mafia.

  • At least 1 person from the newbs is mafia
combining the results, this is a 83.34% chance

  • At least 1 person from the SE is mafia
    58.33% chance

  • IC is the mafia
    22.22% chance
If you're thinking random voting one of the newbs is the most logical choice, you'd be wrong. Here is why:

There are 5 newbs, by randomly choosing one, your chance of being correct is 83.34% / 5 = 16.67%.
Similarly, there are 3 SEs, by randomly choosing one, there is a 19.44% of being correct.
However, since there is only 1 IC, your chance of being correct stands at 22.22%.

I want to brainstorm on that. I feel like there definitely should be a better way to strike up conversation. like maybe a list of questions that people could start off with. "describe behavior that you think is maf. and then describe how maf would answer that question." People could try to answer that question, and maf might try to answer it differently than a town would. and ppl could call other people out responses like that.

idk, just a thought.

The percentages may work out that you're more likely to vote scum if you randomvote the IC but what are the chances that an IC will be flustered or give a noticeable reaction to a random vote, knowing to expect them, rather than a newer player who could be caught flat-footed and panic when they get a vote (assuming that the vote is given at least a vague illusion of seriousness)?

Statistics isn't a good place to start scumhunting. Try this thought experiment: EVERYONE has a 7/9 chance of being town. Since everyone is more likely to be town than mafia, why would we ever lynch anyone?

gene1991: There's been a few attempts to use a 'random question stage' instead but, in my experience, it usually leads to less discussion that's actually specific to the game in question. I've never tried it in a newbie game, though, so it might go better, but either way we're past the need for randomness by now. What do you think of Bacde's vote?

Yessiree, what do you think of Bacde's vote?

The percentages may work out that you're more likely to vote scum if you randomvote the IC but what are the chances that an IC will be flustered or give a noticeable reaction to a random vote, knowing to expect them, rather than a newer player who could be caught flat-footed and panic when they get a vote (assuming that the vote is given at least a vague illusion of seriousness)?

You are right about them being battle-hardened, but filtering out the possibility that they are scum, as early as possible, would benefit the town.

On the other hand, IF they were scum, then making it more apparent as early as possible, would also benefit the town.

Tips for someone who has no idea what to do

1. Never self-vote or self-hammer. Remember that you are playing to win, and self-voting is ALWAYS playing against your win condition (whether you are mafia or town). There are barely ANY circumstances where it is in your win condition's favor to self-vote.
I'm not sure if that's true. In the previous (and first) game I played on this site, someone immediately self voted, and some ppl read it as town because maf wouldn't want to draw that attention to themselves. while others read it as maf and not giving a fuck.
So, I think as long as you are not self-hammering, it can give people reads, and therefore be beneficial.
I doubt any town member actively votes themselves just to prove they are town, though.
So it's not so much beneficial for the person voting themself, but more beneficial for everyone else.

Yessiree, why aren't you voting for gene?

What do you think about my vote for gene?

Do you think its likely that a discussion of statistics will draw an alignment-indicative reaction from a player?
