Hi all...

I was hoping to have us moved off the server by now and reduce the cost of hosting, but still not sure when that's going to happen. Money is especially tight right now with Christmas coming up, so any donations you guys can make would be much appreciated.

I should also be freeing up a little time to get back to looking into cards/t-shirts/etc. in the new year, though of course that remains contingent on finding someone artistic to do the designs. If someone wants to put together a t-shirt design in the next week or so, I'd be happy to look into one of the on-demand printers for holiday t-shirt sales. Otherwise, we're going to need some up front funds to order a run of shirts or cards, and the more feasible it is to do monetarily the harder I will work on making it happen sooner rather than later. (As always, if you are interested in t-shirts or cards, up to $5 of your donation can be applied to the future cost of mafiascum goodies, whenever that happens.)

Um, Mith, random question. How the heck do you pay for all this? Doesn't it cost you like a fortune?

How much do the donations you get cover in terms of the hosting expenses?

Thanks, guys. :)

ABR: I don't have complete records for how much it has cost over the whole life of mafiascum, but I'd guess donations have covered about 75% of it, and I've taken care of the remainder. The expenses aren't huge given our size (but then, that's why we are moving soon - as with the bluehost problems, we're a bit too big for non-dedicated hosting).

mith, have you ever checked out http://www.dreamhost.com? Unlimited hosting and bandwidth for a steal of a price. Their customer service and features are excellent.

None of those places ever give unlimited; you're on a public non-dedicated server, so they'll cut you off if you're using too much of their resources.

What diginova said; we would run into exactly the same problem that we had on bluehost.

The hosting situation will be moving to will be much better, thanks to a generous donation by one of our users. It's just a matter of getting things moved (which is delayed mostly due to jeep having a busy life :)).

I've heard nothing but good things from them. Mafiascum wouldn't fall under this category:
What we mean is, you don't have to worry about disk storage or network transfer when your site gets popular.

You DO still have to worry about plenty of other things though... if your site isn't well optimized and is causing issues for others on your shared server (either because it's pounding the CPU, hogging RAM, or doing tons of disk I/O), you may be asked to sign up for your own DreamHost Private Server.

Trust us, every host out there has exactly the same limitations.. we're just trying to be up front about them!

What's not allowed in "Unlimited"?
Basically, sites whose essential purpose is to use disk or bandwidth.

When making a website, you should be thinking about "How can I make an interesting site for my visitors while minimizing my server storage, bandwidth, file system, memory, and cpu impact as much as possible?"

Disk space and bandwidth are cheap to give away at this point. What killed us on BlueScum, and likely would on DreamHost, is the CPU usage. Show me where they elucidate how they meter that, and we might have something to talk about. But most hosting sites purposefully obscure that factor, because it's the one that php/database-driven sites like this use the most.
Retired as of October 2014.

Once I get settled, eventually, you might find at least $50 before the end of 2011, just to make sure I do have that much.

My scholarship stipend money just got to me and so being a responsible student I spent it on
books
school supplies
something tangentially related to the educational process
a website where I lynch people.

$43.43 to keep that chain going, and with the hope someone outbids me. Remember internet, if we money fight
everyone wins.

I'm embarassingly broke right now but also mortified that I didn't know about this thread sooner. I'll probably make a donation in August or September.

$25 has been donated. You can think of it as coming from Brandi as that be the payment she preferred when Troll commissioned Troll's new avatar from her.
