Why? Because if I protect Gamma, like you said I should, one of two things would happen

1) I successfully protect him, dying in the process. He gets his results.
2) I protect him, you decide to kill me instead. He is bulletproof for the remainder of the game. He gets his results.

If you are scum, the only way to avoid him getting results is to roleblock one of us.

Still, I disagreed with the plan. Generally, as long as one party disagrees, the plan shouldn't be carried out. Actually, prior to Gamma's change to the plan I was gonna guard him, but then he and you ganged up on me and called me a pawn and whatnot, so I decided not to protect either of you as retaliation.
