Well, the overall problem is that pushing for policy lynches is viewed as a scummy move. Policy lynches tend to always be on town because mafia know who is who and can push policy lynches to achieve their win condition without raising suspicion. In post 493, Lycanfire wrote:if you did that, more policies would go through. nobody is going to policy lynch for one game. it's only beneficial if it's a recurring theme, which it isn't.
To fix this there needs to be an out of game punishment. If someone is town and they prod-dodge and lurk all game then they should be considered to be "not playing towards their win condition" and get some sort of meta punishment if it's continuous.Occasionally intellectually honest

Geriatric games just address one of the excuses of prod-dodgers ("There's so many new pages, I can't keep up") and eliminates it.In post 500, mastina wrote:An easy solution to this is to have a rule preventing prod dodges from resetting the prod meter. A game being geriatric should be no excuse to go two/three days without posting. Quite the opposite, in fact; you only have ten posts per day so if you don't use them, you lose them. Geriatric games don't need to require you to post literally every day, but they do require you to actually post at a reasonable rate.
This has ALWAYS been the case even back in the day. If you didn't post every day, that was okay. But if you made it a habit to basically semi-intentionally only post as infrequently as you could get away with...no shit you weren't gonna do well. This was true back then, and is still true now in every game, even geriatric ones. You need to post to win. Geriatric games just afford a more "reasonable" posting rate.Occasionally intellectually honest

Well yeah. I was thinking more after the game where fellow players (and even the mod) can say "Hey, this town player lurked all game and hurt his win condition" and list mods punish off that.In post 521, xRECKONERx wrote:
issue is that lurking as scum is absolutely playing to your winconIn post 496, Kublai Khan wrote:

Sample size = 1In post 554, Mathdino wrote:
Reviving this due to Reck's game which had town completely steamrolled. In post 480, Mathdino wrote:i would argue then that the geriatric ruleset is pro-town if and only if the playerlist is normally active
i think the ruleset was definitely helpful to town in Aeronaut's game, since there was less material to get overwhelmed by, but all players were still producing genuine content to the point where it was easy to get reads
it is not, however, helpful if used as an excuse to only post once every 2 days
and i think geriatric games have the unfortunate potential to draw a crowd of lurkers or people who just don't have time to play mafia
Time for conclusions!Occasionally intellectually honest

New metas have to emerge to deal with the new ruleset. It takes time.In post 563, Mathdino wrote:Okay, so instead of tearing shit down, what's your take?
Those who were scum correctly learned to target active players. When they are town next, they will not be passive.
People that are inactive and refuse to change should be blacklisted.
These things take time. Longer than 3 games.Occasionally intellectually honest

True. Non-geriatric games don't have the lurker/flaker problem.In post 571, Mulch wrote:
Do you realize the irony of thisIn post 568, xRECKONERx wrote:the issue seems to be people signing up for geriatric games who have no intention of staying active
The very POINT of this is to create a haven for people that aren't active and can now lurk without consequences or repercussions.
(right)
If it's not, if you look at it pragmatically that's gonna be the result
Unless you have the PERFECT playerlist of people that don't post a lot, but are extremely active
I would say the problem of lurking is exacerbated by the ruleset.Occasionally intellectually honest

Mulch has been asked a half dozen times to go away from this thread for being an asshole. It's so weird that his views aren't being welcomed. It's such a mystery. Gosh. So much mystery.Last edited by Kublai Khan on Sat Apr 14, 2018 5:12 pm, edited 1 time in total.Occasionally intellectually honest

Probably the best analysis done given the available information. In post 570, insanity018 wrote:Maybe at the start, those players are joining because they're busy but think that they would be able to handle a geriatric game. Hopefully over time and after more geriatric games are run, they will be able to understand their limits and only sign up if they actually do have enough time to play.
People without much time get excited to play mafia again and sign up for a game that promises not to have ridiculous 200+ pages of spam.
Sign up, but find out that they had less time to play than they originally figured. Self-correcting problem and serial flakes will be identified.
Instead of tracking wins/losses (like lol who cares?), we should be tracking if geriatric games have more/less overall instances of flaking and whether they encourage a greater diversity of players.Occasionally intellectually honest
