It's really a matter of how much being unfamiliar with terminology and voting norms bothers you; basically, in newbie games talking about terms, concepts, and strategies is par for the course because the idea is everyone is trying to get a handle on the game. People will explain terms in non-newbie games if you ask but they will generally be assuming you know what they mean. I think it's fine to do non-newbie games if you've played a few games in the past so long as you're okay having google or the wiki open.

That being said newbie games are pretty nice. They tend to have an even pace and nice people so I think you're good to either way. I wouldn't avoid the newbie queue; honestly it's one of the best queues on the site. But you can go either way if you want.
