game rules

site rules:
obey all site rules. you can read the site rules here.
do not discuss the game in any capacity outside of this game thread unless your role gives you explicit permission to do so. if you are allowed to do so, I will provide you with a private topic where you can do so.
do not harass other players in this game. while a certain level of confrontation and argumentation is typical in Mafia games, do not bring personal vendettas or outside influences into the game. additionally, do not harm or threaten to harm any person.

game conduct:
play to win the game. there is a chance that you will lose the game, but do your best to avoid that, and do not deliberately throw the game.
do not use the color #8C0000.
do not use any sort of cryptography, hidden text, or other similar methods to hide information in the game thread unless your role explicitly states that you may do so. if you are unsure of what is not allowed, PM me for clarification.
do not quote information from private threads or from the moderator.
if you have access to a private thread, assume that that is the only place where you may communicate privately with the other people in that thread unless your role explicitly says otherwise.

joining the game, leaving the game, and activity:
at the beginning of the game, you will receive a role PM. please confirm by telling me your alignment and any players whose alignment you know, along with a brief summary of any non-vanilla abilities you have.
if you will be away from the site for a set period of time, please post in the thread letting the other players know this and PM me, and update the "Vacation / Limited Access" info in the User Control Panel. I will be more lenient regarding inactivity if you are V/LA, but I may need to replace you if you will be gone for an extended period of time. if you are regularly V/LA at certain times (such as during the weekend), you only need to do this once.
if you do not post for awhile (no specific amount of time -- this will depend on how the rest of the game is progressing), I will prod you (or send you a reminder to check in when possible if you have announced that you are V/LA); failure to respond to prods or needing to be prodded repeatedly throughout the game might result in a replacement.
if you need to be replaced for any reason, you may message me with information to be passed on to the player who replaces you. this isn't mandatory, but if there's strategic advice you'd like to offer to whomever replaces you, you can do this.

gameplay:
living players may vote to lynch living players by writing
vote: player
or VOTE: player in the game thread. you may also vote for no lynch.
once the majority of living players are voting to lynch a player, that player will die.
if you have died, please do not post in the thread anymore. you are not officially considered dead until I announce your death in the game thread.
I might implement a deadline for day phases. if so, I will announce how long the deadline is, and it will be included in votecounts for the rest of the day. if the deadline passes and no majority has been achieved, the day will end without a lynch.
each night phase will last 48 hours, plus however much time it takes me to start the next day.
a sample role PM for the town is included at the bottom of this post.

moderator responsibilities:
I will not edit your posts unless your post breaks the rules in such a way that information needs to be removed from it or quotes a post that does that, or you ask me to edit it to fix a broken tag. I will provide a brief explanation of the edit and, in cases of fixing broken tags, will end the post with a spoiler containing the complete original text of the post.
if you have a pronoun listed on your account, I will use that to refer to you. otherwise, I will default to referring to you as "they"/"them". if you do not have a pronoun listed on your account but wish for me to refer to you using some other pronoun, message me to let me know.
I will do my best to keep the game running as smoothly as possible, but there will be times when I'm not around. the frequency with which I update the game will be somewhat dependent on how the game is progressing, but I'll try to update the thread regularly.
I reserve the right to modify these rules at any time if necessary.

Andi Mathers has been a newscaster at WVOQ for 13 years, but nothing that's ever happened here has prepared her for this. certainly, there's always been crime in Echo Bay, some of it violent, but the recent wave of death across the city has been more extreme and more frequent than anything that's ever happened here. for three years after she graduated college, she'd been a reporter in Charm City, nary an hour away, and she'd dealt with her fair share of death, but she came here looking for change, and this was what she faced instead. was this her future? was this just the way people were now?

"7... 6..."

the man counting down went silent. just hand signals now. the silence filled the whole room. a somber, hopeless feeling. she had grown complacent in this job; she sat behind a desk and read the news each night at 7 PM, and that was it. but tonight, things were different. she turned and looked at her co-host, who nodded somberly. tonight, her regular co-host was out. he was mourning the death of his sister. murdered by a violent, angry mob.

there would be more death. but what would make it end? that was impossible to say.

a producer slid a sheet of paper toward her. it informed her of a prison riot at Echo Bay Penitentiary following the murder of another prison employee. more bad news.

mastina has died, and was a town jailkeeper.

the death of the mayor changed everything. it brought new perspective to a people who were scared, upset, confused. it gave people a moment to pause and reflect on what had happened so far.

what it didn't do is change anything.

Markus Wilson, Sr., had long theorized that it was human nature to destroy, because humans seek to end the hierarchies that bind them. kill an authority figure, and suddenly you're in charge. he thought that by eliminating those hierarchies, we might eliminate death itself, and he left Dorothy to this task through a program he called the sequences. give people the ability to freely end life, and people will sort themselves out in a way that isn't normally possible.

before the sequences could begin, though, she had to demonstrate to the people why they were necessary. one death spirals into another, into another, into another, until eventually everything settles, and some people are left alive, but the hierarchies themselves remain untouched. and so she had started this campaign of murder with Roderick Howell, the chairman of Howell Hospital, a position he earned only through nepotism -- a well respected man in the community. the fact that his death was a necessary consequence for her own life played a role in this, but more than anything, this was about the sequences.

after a month had passed, people started to think things might be okay again. but that complacency created the necessary conditions for everything to start once again. this was inevitable.

the body, found rotting in a shed eleven days later, proved otherwise. at some point, a mob had come together to dispatch another life. the cycle continued.

for a brief moment, Dorothy had considered the possiblity that things might be okay. maybe all the incredible circumstances that had brought her into existence at this specific point in time weren't necessary, and she could rest easy. it was clear to her now, though, that things were only going to get worse before they got better.

she'd need to get her hands dirty.

Gamma Emerald has died, and was a town roleblocker.

suddenly, gunfire. an automatic weapon from somewhere in the auditorium. another mayor dead.

snow flutters through the air -- the first snow of winter. for just one night, everything seems bright and cheerful and alive. everyone forgets that this has been a year marked by death and suffering. this is a day when nothing can go wrong.

that is when the gunmen enter the scene. it's not that people were wrong to have hope; it was just wrong of them to believe that hope could last.

shots are fired. bodies fall to the ground. they're so brazen about it now; they don't even bother hiding their faces. Dorothy sits on a nearby park bench, barely looking up from her newspaper. there are still dozens of people here, so practically speaking, the woman not making any commotion is unlikely to even be noticed, but even if things do go wrong, she's no longer afraid to die.

she wonders if her other self is afraid to die. they haven't talked since that night her son died. it's not that she's not interested in the goings on of her genetically identical progenitor -- who wouldn't be interested to know that sort of thing? -- it's just that she's been so busy with other preparations. she's realized what she has to do. this mission is more important than her.

police quickly arrive on the scene. one of them is shot, but they convince the gunmen to put down their weapons. they're taken into custody, and the brutality ends. but they've won, right? they've convinced the people that they are unable to protect themselves. the powers that be will inevitably prevent the people from actually representing their own best interests. they're talking of holding a special election next month to choose a new mayor. that won't solve anything.

"I am. I have a contingency in place so that I can continue the sequences if I die, but yes, Roderick. I will be putting my life on the line. how can I possibly hope the ideology for which I stand triumphs if I'm not willing to do this?"

"so what are we doing for the next two weeks, then?"

"we're waiting for a package to arrive. have you heard of a company called Future Core Neural Designs?"

"I can't say that I have."

"well, 23 years and a few months from now, they're hopefully going to finish work on a very important project. at some point in time, Emma will take partial control of the company. she'll think this means she's won, but... we'll just have to wait and see how things take shape."

just so you all know, if you're interested in playing another game moderated by me, I have a 17-player large theme game in signups right now! it wasn't designed by me (there's an explanation of that in the opening post) and is guaranteed to be single ball with no third parties, but I think you'll have a good time even without a jester!
