Summary

Based on the game show of the same name, the objective of Identity is for the contestant to match 12 "strangers" to their identities. To help with this, contestants will have lifelines and a formal questioning process at their disposal.

The role of the Stranger

Pregame:

When you sign up to be a stranger, privately submit at least one identity. Ideally, an identity should be specific enough that it should not apply to any other stranger. For instance, expecting the contestant to guess which stranger submitted that they've never broken a bone is not super fun; it's likely that several other strangers also have never. If you are interested in being a stranger but are having trouble thinking of anything, feel free to chat with me and see what we can come up with!

Spoiler: Examples of identities used in previous games include

During the game

: There is a formal questioning mechanic in which the contestant may pose you a question about an identity. You have the option to respond with some variation of "Decline to answer" either in thread or privately to the mod if answering would cause discomfort. Otherwise, if it is in relation to your identity, answer truthfully. If it is in relation to someone else's identity, please answer as though it were your identity (plausibly lie).

If you notice that another stranger's identity as written applies to you as well, please privately tell me this so it can be resolved. (Either we will try to change the wording to be more specific to the submitter, or swap the identity for a new one if that isn't possible.)

General Rules for the Contestant

• Official game decisions, including identity match attempts, should be

• Submitting conditional decisions is allowed (e.g.
  Match KittyMo to Wanted to be a marine biologist when they grew up. If that is incorrect match KittyMo to Was once falsely accused by N of pretending to be Australian.

• You may revoke official game decisions if they have not been officially responded to. (e.g., if you change your mind about asking a stranger a question before they answer it, that's fine.) Just be clear and
  bold
  about the change.
  
• The game will end after 12 match attempts are made. Your progress will be reflected on the Match Attempt chart.
  
• After you have run out of guesses, you may make a final unofficial guess at every remaining identity. I will remind you of this opportunity before giving the full reveal.
  
• There are no formal activity requirements, but I may PM/DM you to remind you about the game if it has been more than 48 hours since you made a game decision. I reserve the right to replace a contestant that is extremely inactive.

Assistance

The contestant starts out with 4 Lifelines & 1 question to assist them. They will continue to accumulate questions to use throughout the game. If the contestant correctly guesses 8 strangers' identities, whatever lifelines & banked questions they had left are revoked. Questions, however, still accumulate thereafter.

Questioning

Before each attempt at an identity match, the contestant has the opportunity to select an identity and stranger, and then pose a question to that stranger about that identity. Open-ended and close-ended questions are acceptable. If they are questioned about their own identity, the stranger should answer truthfully. If they are questioned about someone else's identity, they should still answer as though it is true (as plausibly as possible.) It is thus up to the contestant to evaluate that stranger's explanation. Strangers may opt to instead decline to answer; if they do, the question will be refunded to you.

Spoiler: Examples of questions

• About the "Spent 2 months in a foreign country with 500 dollars to [Stranger's] name" identity: "Which foreign country did you travel to for that period of time?"
  
• About the "First time swearing was telling a bully to 'shut the fuck up' freshman year of high school, and then did not swear again until after graduation" identity: what was the bully saying?
  
• "In reference to, 'In middle school, got the song "Little Brown Jug" banned by their music director," can you elaborate on the circumstances that led to this happening?"
  
• About the "Has broken 4 computers and had a notebook stolen" identity: "How did each of your 4 computers break?"

Lifelines

• Tri-dentity
  : The contestant chooses an identity and the number of strangers to choose from is narrowed down to three: the correct stranger and two incorrect strangers. The player must choose the correct stranger out of the three that matches the identity.
  Once the contestant has chosen to use their Tri-dentity, the contestant must solve that identity before attempting to solve any other identity or before using Split Identity.
  
  
• Double Dip
  : The contestant can select two strangers to match to one identity; if it matches either, a correct guess is counted.
  
• Mistaken Identity
  : You get one free pass if you make an incorrect guess.
  
• Split Identity
  : Take the identities and split them up into 2 groups. A group must have a minimum of two people, and they can be uneven in numbers. In response, I will reveal which 2 groups of strangers correspond to your chosen identity groups. If you use Tri-dentity after using this lifeline, the number of strangers to choose from is narrowed down to three from that group only; in turn, you cannot.

Bonus Lifeline

• Phone a Friend
  : This lifeline will become available as extra help to a contestant that has yet to make 8 total correct matches and has made 3 consecutive incorrect match attempts. Select a MafiaScum user that is not a stranger in the current round (please pick someone you can reasonably expect won't mind participating.) I'll PM/DM them to let them know you're phoning them. They can weigh in on any two identities that they'd like to in this thread (who they think likely does or doesn't have it and why.) Spectators may volunteer themselves as potential Friends!
