Tbf i don’t view duolingo so much as a tool for being able to speak a language as much as one to allow you to accelerate the pace at which you become conversational once you start working on that

@all where were you going when you had to explain mafia
I was going home from Colombia to the UK, but my flight stopped in Miami and because of stupid airport rules you can't transfer through, you have to leave and then go back in passing through security a second time

got "randomly" selected for further screening and I had a copy of Avalon in my luggage that the agent asked me about. I tried to explain but she didn't really get it so I went into greater length about mafia and informed minority/uninformed majority games as a genre

I'm still wondering if beach bars are a French thing
I’m not french, so irrelevant

I’ve actually also never been to southern (Mediterranean coast) France and so have no idea

not really. often when you're in residential halls then you can buy your meals there from the cafeteria, but it's pay-as-you-go. they're discounted but whether you would consider them 'good value' depends a lot.

most students aren't in residential halls though, but in shared student flats instead, and normally in the second and third year of uni students move out to live with friends they met in those flats or on their course.

HOWEVER, with covid forcing some students to isolate in halls and making them unable to all go down to the cafeteria, some universities have been giving them "food parcels" that they're required to pay for which by all accounts have been extortionate for what they are.
