I'm trying to think of it in terms of percentages. Like, grab a thousand people off the street. Heck, make it a thousand people at a university. How many of them would take a look at PhD-level math and not think it was confusing?

At least from an academic standpoint, "PhD level" is as tough as it gets? Isn't that the level where you can't just regurgitate stuff that's already known; you have to go find new truths for yourself? From one perspective, that could be seen as "trying to understand something that no one has demonstrated understanding of yet?"

That could hold true for just about any PhD-level subject, and she chose math specifically, which is something that a lot of people find confusing to start with.

I think most people (but

all people) for whom the situation could apply would find that to be very emotionally painful - with any physical pain being a direct side-effect of the emotional pain.

That being said, something like "your spouse deliberately stabbing you with a knife" would still hit the betrayal / emotional pain part while also adding an element of physical pain. So I wouldn't put this at the far end regardless.

Spouse + best friend = worse, but "messing around" as opposed to "cheating" = better; "cheating" would make it unambiguous that it's an act of betrayal, while "messing around" at least leaves the door open to the *possibility* that it isn't, depending on the people involved.

I'm getting together with a friend that I haven't seen since COVID started. That's happening tomorrow, and we're doing my favorite leisure activity. I'm not ranking that at a 96+. Throw in A/C in the middle of the record-breaking temperatures we had back in June and I still wouldn't rate it a 96+.

I'd save 96 for something more ... momentous. Like, "loved one goes into remission". That's the sort of thing I'd expect to see for a top-of-the-scale clue.

90 is the highest I can see this being, and I think even then I'm aiming too high.

At least when I was going to school, 7th grade was right around the time when the concept of algebra would be introduced. I don't know if that's still the case nowadays; if it is, I'd expect beginner-level algebra problems.
