Night Falls.

Mondays are the worst.

You can’t think of much else as you thrash under the covers, unable to sleep.

The office has fallen on hard times lately, but a sudden opportunity has presented itself: a group of foreign businessmen has decided to buy out your chain and absorb it into their multinational conglomerate.

This should be good news. New management under a new company will mean better pay, better hours. You could move out of your crummy apartment, get a nice place in the suburbs. Maybe take that vacation you’ve been thinking about.

But there’s a catch. New management is only willing to bring in a small, close-knit group of your branch’s top employees to the bigger, better offices. But who will go? New management is not interested in making the decision – they just want a list of the top names. Your old boss is no help – he took a payoff and flew off to the islands with his mistress, leaving you and your coworkers to sort it out for yourselves.

To make matters worse, you’ve found some anomalies in the books that suggest not everybody angling to make it through the merger is on the up-and-up. You shudder to think what they could do if they gain access to the conglomerate’s expanded client lists. At the very least, you and your coworkers will be out of a job. And your stomach knots as you realize that they might think YOU are among the ones trying to freeze everybody else out.

So you twist and turn in bed, the hours and the night ticking by. You’ve shared a workspace with some in your office for months; some of them, for years. You don’t want to think which of them might be planning to stab you in the back, but think you must.

Because when the day dawns, they’ll be coming for you.

Monday Morning.

You come to work on Monday, ready to hash it all out. You toss your coat on the rack and call out a greeting. Nobody responds. The office looks empty.

Maybe they’re in the conference room already,

you think, and stride toward the end of the hall. As you draw near, you pause. Mumbling voices sound on the other side of the door, and shadows shift in the smoked glass. You take a deep breath.

Let’s get it over with.

You reach for the door, but rough hands grab you from behind and spin you into a janitor’s closet.

Inside, it’s dark. The air is musty and thick with the harsh tang of cleaning products and disinfectant. As the door slams shut at your back, you hear a voice whisper in your ear: “Listen up. I think you’re trustworthy. But I know this: somebody in this room is selling us out, and they’ve got a partner in the conference room with the rest of our team. And we need to fire them both before the end of the week.”

With a click, a bare bulb on a string throws its harsh light around the room. Blinking in the sudden brightness, you make out the faces of your coworkers. Suddenly, in the jagged shadows of the closet, their faces don’t look quite as friendly as before.

After an uncomfortable discussion, you and your comrades shuffle out and into the conference room, where the rest of the office is waiting. It’s time to send somebody home for good.

“Is this really happening?” Todoroki says to nobody in particular, a faraway look in their eye.

Esther mutters something about a severance package, but Todoroki doesn’t seem to have heard.

“Three years I’ve given to this company, and you throw me out on my ass? Jesus. How will you live with yourselves?”

Nobody has anything helpful to say to that. After a tense several moments, Todoroki scoots their chair back, stands briskly, adjusts their tie. “Guess I’ll pack up my cubicle, then.”

Puppy clears their throat. “Sorry, Todo.”

Todoroki stops, their hand on the door handle, just a glimmer of hope in their eye.

Puppy finishes, “but security will have to handle that for you.”

Todoroki chuckles, hollow and mirthless. They shake their head and walk out.

Security clears out their desk and turns up nothing but a bunch of office supplies and pictures of a couple of adorable kids.

As you all shuffle into the conference room, the phone rings. After an uneasy moment, you reach over and pick it up on speakerphone.

“Hello?”

The voice on the other end is hot and scathing. New management. Unhappy. “Is everybody there?”

“Er, yes, it looks like –”

“Where’s Kuriyama? I want to speak to her directly.”

You all turn to look at Kuriyama, who goes white as a sheet. “Y-yes?” she stammers.

“Maybe you would like to tell me what the hell you’re trying to pull over there?”

Silence falls across the room. Fingers tap nervously on the tabletop, eyes dart from one face to another.

“No?” the voice from the phone booms. “Social media posts from you about how you’re going to ‘take these corporate bastards for a ride’? A bunch of drunken selfies, a frankly ungodly amount of dick pics, and a stack of half-finished romance novels that, what, you’ve been writing on company time?”

Kuriyama looks wildly around at you and the rest of the office. “I didn’t – I mean, I would never –”

“Save it. It’s frankly a miracle that the board hasn’t shut down this acquisition, and there’s zero chance it goes through if you’re involved. You’re fired.” There’s a slam and a click from the other end, and then, dead silence.

“This was a setup,” Kuriyama mutters. Then she stands, smooths her hair back, and looks around, staring each of you in the eyes. “Screw it. I hated this job anyway.” She walks out without so much as a backward glance.

You’ll regret this, you bastards!” They foam and fume for a few minutes as you and your coworkers stare fixedly at the conference table, then storm out of the office, overturning chairs and desks and smashing a printer as they go.

“Should we call security?” somebody asks, and you do.

Not a moment too soon, either. Security picks innocentvillager up at the elevator and escorts them to their car, and catches a glimpse of a gun and several folders of pilfered company records in the backseat.

Wednesday Morning.

You arrive at the office on Wednesday morning with a spring in your step. With innocentvillager in the hands of the authorities, it feels like you might be on your way to making this merger work. For the first time in a few days, you enter the office with a hint of optimism.

But you quickly realize something is amiss. Mc esther isn’t here, and she’s usually one of the first ones in the building. You make your way to the conference room. She’s not there, either. By 9 AM, everybody has arrived … except Esther. Nobody feels good about starting the discussion without her, so you agree to wait. Five minutes pass, then ten, then twenty, and then, the phone rings.

It’s Esther. She’s hard to hear over the sound of wind and passing cars, but you can’t mistake her words.

“I’m out.”

“What? Esther, what happened? Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m okay. Barely. Listen.” Her voice breaks a little and she has to pause before she continues. “I’m on the side of the highway right now. I was only a few minutes from my house when … my car just … I couldn’t stop. I panicked, and I clipped a Subaru, and we both went into the ditch. My car’s a total write-off.”

“Jesus, are you –”

“Just let me finish,” she says. “I told the officer what happened, and they checked my vehicle. Somebody cut my brake lines.”

The room goes deathly silent.

“I think whoever was working with IV is panicking. They’re dangerous. I could’ve been killed. So, I’m out. No job is worth this.”

She hesitates for just a moment, the sound of passing cars roaring through the speaker.

“And if you have any sense, the rest of you will get out, too.”

Dwlee cracks a grin, then, as you look on with concern, starts laughing. Great guffaws burst forth, each bigger than the last, until they are beating on the table, gasping for breath.

“Oh, man, I’m sorry,” they say, coughing now, as they attempt to get their breath back under control. “It’s just … it’s all so IDIOTIC.”

“Look,” says Prism. “There’s nothing personal, here. We have to –”

“No, I know.” Dwlee stands up from the table, loosens their tie, leans on the back of their chair. “We have to clean house. Streamline. Economize. So you get rid of Todoroki, and then you send up Kuriyama. Never mind I had nothing to do with IV, or what happened to Esther. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised it’s my turn now.”

“Sorry, Dwlee,” Dunnstral mumbles.

“You can take your sorries and shove them right up your ass, Dunn.” Dwlee flings the chair to the ground. “Sorries aren’t gonna pay off my goddamn mortgage.”

Dwlee walks to the door, but turns back before leaving. “You know what? It’s better this way. At least you had to look me in the eyes while you sold me out. It’s better than Kuriyama got.”

You wake up in the middle of the night.

It’s not the first time since all this started. The stress is getting to you. You’ve skipped meals, lost weight. Did you shower yesterday? You can’t remember.

Is it worth it?

You wonder silently to yourself. You’re not even sure anymore. But then you think of the time you’ve spent with the company, and the time trying to root out these traitors in your midst, and of what they’ve done to Kuriyama and Esther, and you make a decision. They won’t get away with it.

Then, a banging on your door. You glance at the clock. 3 AM.

It’s Puppy. They haven’t slept either. You think back to how they got that nickname, and the story would make you laugh, if you could bring yourself to laugh these days.

You ask what’s going on. They look pained for a moment before they answer.

“Look, I’m going to tell you this, because you deserve to know. I’m not coming back.”

“You … what? Why?”

“Whoever’s doing this to us … it’s personal, you know? And after Esther and Kuri, I’m not going to let them do it to me, too. I was, um … I don’t know how to say this. I was … involved in something I’m not proud of. And I can’t have it coming out. So … I’m leaving.”

“Jesus. Hey, we can figure it out, we can –”

“No.” They reach into their pocket and pull out a crumpled piece of paper. It’s a picture, a grainy photograph. It’s Puppy and some other person, some severe-looking individual in a dark suit and glasses. Before you can see more than that, Puppy snatches the picture back into their pocket. “They know, all right? They know. And they’ll use it against me sooner or later, so. I’d been thinking of moving for a while now, and I think it’s for the best. I’m just … yeah, this is the kick in the ass that I needed.” They look at you, more optimistic than you’ve seen them in days. “Yeah. I’d encourage you to do the same, but I know you’re the type to stick it out to the end. So just … if you’re gonna stay, make sure you get them. Okay?”

You watch, stunned, as Puppy turns and walks off into the night. You call lamely after them, “I guess I’ll see you around?”

Puppy turns back with a wan smile. “No, you won’t.”

“Don’t do this,” Prism says, rising and herding him toward the door. “It’s over. I knew it was you all along. Get your shit and get out.”

Dunnstral looks to Dragons for help. “You can’t really believe …”

But Dragons folds his arms. “Sorry, Dunn. I’m with Prism. You have to go.”

Dunnstral knows a lost cause when he sees one. He slams the door, and you hear his shouts of profanity all the way down the hall.

Dunnstral has been eliminated on Day 4.

Endgame

“Well, I guess we’ve got a call to make, don’t we?” Dragons says, smiling nervously. Somehow it didn’t seem like the end would be so easy.

“Yes, we do.” Prism has opened the door, watching to make sure Dunnstral is well and truly gone.

Dragons dials the number on the conference phone. “You know, I’m relieved. I couldn’t shake the idea that it might have been you, but in the end, I’m glad you and I are on the same side in this –”

Prism, satisfied it’s just the two of you, turns casually around. A pistol gleams in their hand. “I’ve been thinking the same thing.”

Dragons freezes in his chair as your new owner picks up. “Yes? Have you figured it out?”

“I believe we have,” Prism says. “Unfortunately, there were even more unsavory elements in our little operation than we thought. In fact, I’m dealing with the last one as we speak.”

As they talk, Prism pulls out a folded letter of resignation, with Dragons’ real name at the bottom, then slides it across the table, waggling the gun for good measure. Dragons gulps and reaches for a pen.

Prism continues: “But not to worry. I’ve got several business associates of my own who, I’m sure, will have us on the right direction for the future of our company.”

Save the Dragons has been endgamed.

Thanks for playing! This was my first time modding, and I appreciate all of you signing up and going the distance. I wrote the town-win ending very early in the game (history of the setup suggests that's how this would go) but then, as we got to the end of day 3, realized, nope, I'd better write the scum-win ending, too. You live and learn.

Oh, and I'll pick a better mod color for you non-mafblack users next time, too.
