I played in a pyp a looooong time ago and the town used some big brain method to determine scum based on numbers. It was slightly different as we drafted two numbers. One of you big brains can probably figure it out although it may have required some pregaming. All I know is I felt like town had esp and got me dead just based on the number I picked.

the basic idea for those unfamiliar is that playing scum or just in general lying is a lot more cognitive stress / a lot more of a cognitive load than playing town is, and one consequence of this is that someone may be less likely to pick up on humor, and thus will respond to a joke completely seriously or misinterpret what someone's saying. I think their misunderstanding of the setup looks rather genuine and not the way that scum would try to fake a slip like that. People like to WIFOM their way out of that logic sometimes, but scum rarely actually try something like that early because it's just not that effective as a way to get townread, on average. I believe there's credit to the fact that both SCRRRDBEAR and northsidegal held an early townread there as well! So I feel good about having JunkoChan as town from the start.
